We started off the month with many of us attending the Century 21 show Saturday, May 2 nd. The next Saturday we won the Club Participation award at the Townsmen show in Loomis. Then, on the 23rd of May we had a large turn-out for the Thunderbolts show in Rio Linda. To finish off the month we had over 29 members come out to the Roseville Care Center on the 28 th so the residents and staff could enjoy our cars. In addition, we had smaller numbers of members attending the Fair Oaks show, Gold Rush show in Oroville, and the Wednesday night show at Mel s in Auburn, the Auburn Cruise Night, the Yuba Auto Academy show and the Eagles Nest show in Ione. When you read this article our car show will only be a few days away. It should be another great show, thanks to all the committee members who have done the planning to make our show run smoothly. The weatherman is predicting temperatures in the low 90 s, warmer than I would like, but ok. Rich Ragan has been working with Scott Macleod at Thunder Valley and it looks like everything is going well. They will provide backpacks for the first 200 cars registered. They will give out 5 trophies and in addition to providing regular raffle prizes, they will give us a guitar signed by Cheap Trick. Our registration for Saturday s show is running about the same as last year. Since June 6th is the anniversary of D-Day, we will have some restored Military vehicles and a flyover at our 10:00 AM opening. We will have activities for the kids provided by Home Depot again this year. We will also have a shuttle bus service between our show and the show at the Lincoln Airport. The shuttle stop will be at Dillon s on 6th St. This year we will have a special Wine Tasting raffle. The winner will not have to be present for the drawing. We hope this will boost our raffle ticket sales. Thanks to all of you that pitched in after our May meeting to help stuff our goody bags. It s been great to see the number of prospective new members that have been attending our breakfast and business meetings. We look forward to having you as members of Rods & Relics. I recently forwarded you an ACCC E-News regarding California SB16 which, if passed, will increase gas taxes by cents a gallon and increase car tax $ We already have the highest gas tax in the country. All of this is on top of the hidden tax brought about when CARB added fuel to the Cap and Trade program. Go to: to see what you can do to try to stop this unnecessary tax increase. See you at our car shows, until next time cruise safe. Ray Geiger

3 DOWNTOWN GRASS VALLEY I got up at 5 AM to maybe go to the Grass Valley Car Show. For days before the show, rain was predicted and when I got the paper that morning it was raining and when I checked the weather on the WEB, it showed rain in Grass Valley rain throughout the day! Stay home or go go or stay home, couldn t make up my mind as I showered, shaved got dressed, etc. Finally I decided to take a chance and left. It had stopped raining only to run into rain in Auburn and all the way to Grass Valley. When I pulled into downtown it didn t look good, just a handful of cars, one plus I had my choice of just about any place I wanted to park. The rain turned into a light drizzle and it would rain 10 to 15 minutes then the sun would come out and this went on until about noon when it finally stopped. I wiped my car off about four times that morning, each time with a little bit less effort. All in all they had close to 200 cars braving the weather. So, the show went on and the awards were at 2 PM. You would think that if someone like myself would brave the weather I would be presented with an award, any award, was not meant to be. Oh well, next year! I like this show and will be putting it on my calendar for E. McVey My cheek Says she Feels smooth as satin Ha! Ha! Says he That s mine you re patting Burma-Shave CHILI COOK OFF P A G E 3 Gene Thorpe of Century 21 hosted a Select Chili Cook-off, Car Show and 4 band Extravaganza to benefit the American Cancer Society and Relay for life. The event was open to the public from 10 AM to 3 PM. The official car count was 55 vehicles from all over, Rods & Relics had nine. Car owners enjoyed tri-tip sandwiches while listening to music performed by local bands, and voted for their favorite chili while touring the parking lot looking at the cars and trucks that they have not seen before. Trophies were presented in mid afternoon, Dennis Malone won 2nd place with his beautiful 1938 Ford. There was a mystery at the awards time due to the owner of a 1932 Ford not claiming his trophy. All the owners were pleased to have their vehicle appreciated. This is the 4th year that Gene Thorpe has sponsored this event and its popularity is really growing. Pictures of the event are on You Tube., check them out. Car Trivia Before franchised fast food, what did you do? See pages 8 & 9

4 P A G E 4 TOWNSMEN CAR SHOW E. McVey I had registered for the Oroville Car Show before I received the registration form in the mail that announced that the Townsmen were having their annual Car Show on the 9th of May. I was weighing the facts when I was told that blood is thicker than water we went to the Townsmen Show so Julie could spend some time with her sister. I just hate it when two good car shows are scheduled for the same day. I hope the Townsmen will try to resolve this next year so we can go to both shows. The Loomis Train Station was full of cars and just about any vacant piece of asphalt nearby. This show is growing and they are running out of space to park cars. I am sure there are lots of Car Shows that wish they had this problem. The Townsmen are a great car club and everyone who worked the show was just fantastic. I can t say enough about their show. They have a great raffle and the trophies are always top-notch. The Show is well organized, no wonder it is growing so fast. We won the club participation award, Emilie and Gary Righetti won an award for their beautiful car, see below. I really liked that trophy and think I should have won one for being an obedient husband. Oh well, next time. WOODLAND CAR SHOW May 2nd The Woodland Street Cruisers, along with other organizations in Woodland, put on this car Show. It was the first time that they had it downtown. Previously it had been at the local fairgrounds. Downtown is much better. It was a beautiful day. The weather was just right as I cruised down Hwy 65 to 80 to 5 and then turned onto the main drag and right through the middle of town. It s about a 40 minute drive from home, with no traffic, on a Saturday morning. I pulled onto Main Street about 7:10 AM and was parked by 7:15. They direct traffic one way and everyone is parked facing the same direction it went really fast. It helps that the main drag is a wide street. They had about 340 cars, a few rat-rods, low riders more than we usually see at shows in our area, but, hey some nice rides. The sidewalks are very wide with plenty of room to set up chairs and still leave room for pedestrians. There was a wide variety of food: Mexican, Italian, Oriental, BBQ and hamburgers. Also, a subway, a bakery, a cookie shop, a Salad and a Sandwich shop plenty of good eateries. They had music, a raffle, and other activities in the plaza which is somewhat like ours in Lincoln. At 2:30 they gave out close to 30 awards, pretty nice ones and the show was over. Leaving was a snap: everyone drove off in the same direction to the west end of town and then peeled off left and right and on their way home. It was a well laid out show and should only get better. I will be going back for sure next year. E. McVey J U N E N E W S L E T T E R PAGE 4

It was held in the parking lot with the whole city block in front blocked off as well. It could easily hold 80 plus cars but only had about 60. It was a nice show with two free meals with your $20 registration fee: not a bad deal. J U N E N E W S L E T T E R. They have a great garage: well-stocked with tools, lifts, modern diagnostic equipment and all very clean. A nice story line is the shop instructor, a nice guy and car guy. It runs in his family. He owns a 1937 yellow Chevy pick-up, his dad also owns a 1937 yellow Chevy pick-up that he bought new. From a distance you can t tell them apart. But up close, the fathers is a stovebolt six with white walls, while the son s has a small block and ghost flames, great cars, great story. They gave out 8 or 9 trophies, the five of us went home empty handed, but we had a good time. Ed McVey PAGE 5

6 MAY 9TH OROVILLE CAR SHOW I was the point person for the Gold Rush Car Show in Oroville today. No other members followed me to the show. Mike Roby was there with the Capital City Cruisers and two of our prospective new members Ralph Lacaze ( 66 Nova) and Gordon McKenzie was there with his unbelievable 34 Plymouth Coupe, Bad to the Bone Hemi. There were about 540 cars and all had a great time. The best of show and four other classes received cool trophy's made from auto parts. The" goodie" bags were not bad. Their raffle is nothing like ours. My car made it up and back with the air on! I had a victory drink when I got home. 7 ROSEVILLE CARE CENTER CAR SHOW Page 7 HELLO EVERYONE, I personally want to thank everyone who helped our club and friends make today a very successful outing. We had 23 cars, would have been 24, but Kent Parsell blew a hose on his Model A. George Funk stayed with Kent, but they were unsuccessful in getting it back on the road. George, the good club member he is, still made it over later. The weather was not too bad and the senior citizens came out in numbers and really appreciated taking a look and a stroll around the cars. For me, it's about making some elderly and sometimes lonely, people, happy for at least one day, without your support and taking the time to drive your specialty car over there today, this would not have been the success it was. We had coffee & water available for us in the morning and barbequed hamburgers for lunch. They were also serving ice cream floats. THANKS AGAIN TO ALL WHO SHOWED UP TODAY. The next one is June 25th at the Auburn Rock Creek Care Center. HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE. Alan Taylor

8 P A G E 8 Car Trivia Before franchised fast food, What? We took them for granted, on our early road trips. Like the Burma- Shave signs, we never asked where they came from; they were just there. Gleaming stainless steel diners which dotted the landscape of rural America. We could order a malt or a burger, from a waitress named Alice; then select a tune from the Seeburg Jukebox without ever leaving our booth. Turn the knob and dozens of choices would appear. Drop in a quarter for three songs. Punch in the numbers, E- 1, D-4, K-6. And soon the most beautiful music you have ever heard would fill the room. "All Alone Am I" (Brenda Lee), "I Can't Help Falling In Love With You" (Elvis Presley), and "The End Of The World" (Skeeter Davis). Where have all the diners gone? Better yet, where did they come from in the first Prospect Diner, Lincoln Highway (SR 462) place? Lancaster, PA What the diner was: The steel diner was built in a factory, and shipped, sometimes intact, sometimes as a pre-fab to be assembled on site. It had a counter, with stools, and a grill. Some also had booths. Many were built on assembly lines, with identification number plates riveted onto the steel, just like a motor vehicle. What the diner was not: A diner did not have tablecloths, did not take reservations, or require that jackets be worn. They did not have "please wait to be seated" signs, rented plants, no-smoking areas, or serve gourmet food. The diner began as a mobile lunch wagon in Providence, Rhode Island around 1872, and became such a success that they were mass-produced. Then as electric streetcars came into being, the obsolete horsedrawn trolleys were converted into lunch wagons. Patrick J. (Pop) Tierney, of New Rochelle, New York, is considered to be the father of the mass-produced steel diner. "Pop Tierney was to the diner, what Henry Ford was to the automobile." says Randy Garbin, publisher of Roadside, a newspaper devoted exclusively to preservation of diners and other historic roadside treasures. Tierney's factory built them at the rate of one a day, sold them on credit, and financed the buyer. He changed the name from lunch wagons to "dining cars", taking advantage of America's affection for the Pullman dining cars on the railroads. Since the manufacturer was also the finance company, it was in his interest to make the diner profitable; he did this by providing training and business advice. Tierney died a millionaire in Ironically, the cause of death was "acute indigestion". Many other manufacturers can be traced back to Tierney. Sam Kullman, Tierney's accountant, quit and began his own diner manufacturing company. Nearly 100 other manufacturers have come and gone over the years. At their peak, just before WW II, there were 20 manufacturers, most of them in the Northeast. Although factory-built, the purchaser could order the diner to be customized, from a large assortment of colors and equipment. By the 1920's, diners grew, and included booths to accommodate women, who disliked sitting on the stools. Jerry O'Mahony of Bayonne, New Jersey, one of the leading manufacturers, delivered a turn-key diner operation complete with dishes, glasses, cutlery and cookware for about $7,000. "The customer would order the diner from a company brochure, and 3 months later, he'd be in business!" The late Peter and Mary Jane Karter were the founders of Karter's Diner on Bluemound Road in Brookfield, Wisconsin. Alec Karter was a young boy when he traveled with his dad to the diner factory in New York, to select the decor for the new diner. It was shipped by rail to Elm Grove; then trucked to its site in Brookfield. When it arrived in the mid-1950s, it was Wisconsin's largest diner. The Karter family operated the diner until Peter retired; after the family sold the business, Karter's Diner was moved. Left: The sign on the postcard says, "Open 24 hours" Lunch $.50 Dinner $1.50 "Pop Tierney was to the diner, what Henry Ford was to the automobile."

9 P A G E 9 Lucky for those of us who appreciate roadside diners, a few people are buying and re-opening the historic diners. In what can only be described as an extreme example of a labor of love, Keith Walker purchased a diner, built in the Jerry O'Mahony factory in 1939, bearing identification number 1107; trucked it some 2,400 miles from Middletown, Rhode Island to Oakley, Utah; then performed a complete restoration to what it looked like when new. It was re-opened in Utah as the "Road Island Diner".in July of At least three steel diners nationwide have been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. One of these, Mickey's Diner, erected in 1939 in downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota, sits on a busy intersection, dwarfed by skyscrapers. Developers would love to tear it down and replace it with more concrete, but that will not happen, thanks to its protected status! Now that everything old is in vogue again, there are a number of restaurateurs who would cash in on the nostalgia of the old steel diner design. Many remain open as diners today. Watch for them, the next time you drive America's backroads! When you do find one, see if you can find the manufacturer's I.D. plate, often above the entrance door. Look for brand names like Silk City, Kullman, Mountain View, Worcester, or O'Mahony. Diner Finder Here's a great tool for locating a diner, with a clickable map. (See the web sight below) Presented by Randy Garbin of Roadside Online. Photos, addresses, year & make of the diner. You do need to register, but it's free. He also sells the information in a book, which you can take along on your road trips. Happy Traveling!
