1 1 Volume 8 Issue 6 RODS & RELICS CAR CLUB NEWSLETTER June 2016 The Rods & Relics Car Club of Lincoln Hills is a non-profit organization formed by individuals with an interest in: The restoration, preservation and enjoyment of collector vehicles such as Original, Antiques, Classics, Street Rods, Muscle Cars, Special Interest, Modified, and other American or American-powered and older. We use this strong interest to facilitate fund raising and community service to non-profit organizations and people in need. JOIN US! Rods & Relics Meet the 3rd Thursday of each month at 6:30 PM at STRIKES 5681 Lonetree Blvd Rocklin Everyone Welcome OUR PRESIDENT S MESSAGE There have been a wide range of Car Shows that have kept our Club members hopping! This last month saw five of them, from Woodland, Grass Valley, Rocklin, and Loomis, to our Phoenix High School here in Lincoln! These shows attracted a large number of our members who enjoyed the sunny days. My thanks to all of our members who participated in these events! See their stories and the pictures in this issue. Looking ahead to June, we will be experiencing our two biggest events of the year. The first is the Thunder Valley Show and Shine Show on Friday, June 3 from 2:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. I have been working with Scott Macleod of Thunder Valley to ensure another successful Show. Live music of the 60 s, 70 s, and 80 s will be presented by Mike Furlong s band from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Judging will be done by members of the Casino s management team. Trophies will be awarded at 8:00 p.m. Over 200 vehicles are expected. On Saturday, June 4, our Downtown Lincoln Car Show will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. We are expecting over 350 vehicles on the shady tree-lined streets of Lincoln. Boy Scout Troop #160 will host a Pancake Breakfast from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the VFW Hall. You will want to buy raffle tickets as the available merchandise is dazzling there is even a guitar signed by the Beach Boys, compliments of Thunder Valley Casino. I am a most fortunate guy to be working with a top notch group of professionals who willingly share their years of experience and have donated countless hours to our Club s success. My hat is off to all of you for leading and seeing that the multitude of tasks, necessary for a successful Car Show, are accomplished. On Saturday, June 11, the AirFest Show is being held at the Lincoln Airport from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Featured will be a huge display of military/non-military aircraft, hot air balloons, sky diving, food trucks, and a variety of vendors. The Rods & Relics are the featured Car Club and many of our members vehicles will be lined up on the flight line. Our Club will also be featured at the 8 th Annual Classics, Cats, and Cabernet. The event is on Saturday afternoon held at the FieldHaven Feline Center at 2754 Ironwood Lane, northeast Lincoln, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Looking forward to a most rewarding June I will see you at the events!

2 2 THUNDERBOLTS Saturday, May 14th, I made the long drive to Depot Park in Rio Linda for the Thunderbolts Car Show. Oops, I mean I made the short drive to Sierra College to the Thunderbolts Car Show. They changed the venue this year, I always liked the Depot Park venue and didn t see any reason to move it somewhere else but as they say s**t happens and they moved on. When I heard it was relocating to Sierra College I liked the idea of a short trip but didn t think the parking lot at the college was a good site. But then again, who am I to second guess a wellknown club like the Thunderbolts. They always put on a good Car Show and the change in venue made no difference. They still put on a good show and the overhead solar panels provide a lot of shade and the parking lot is really big. I think they are on to something. Rods & Relics had, by my count, seventeen cars at the show. I think they like the short drive and everyone liked the shade. Mike Roby and his Chevy Nova took home an award and somehow they overlooked my 55 again! Oh well, next week at the Townsmen Car Show, I m due I can feel it in my bones...yes! Ed McVey rainiam sure everyone was home long before Ray Ray Geiger Townsmen s 2016 Car Show Saturday May 21 st the Townsmen hosted their 13 th annual Car Show at the Loomis Train Depot. In spite of a weather report calling for possible rain and thundershowers it turned out to be a perfect day for a car show. The weather forecast limited attendance to about one hundred and fifty participants. An additional 70 pre-registered vehicles did not show up and I am sure they would have had many more day of show registrants including a number of our club members if rain had not been forecast. Several brave members, Larry Hickerson, Ed McVey, Terry MacDonald and I met at Target on Sierra College and drove over to the depot where we were met by Mike Roby and Gary McCoig. After setting up my E-Z Up and the Rods & Relics banner, I headed over to pick up my registration packet and purchase some raffle tickets. They had marked off a car length, 137 tickets, on the sidewalk and it appeared that most people were getting $20.00 worth. Hoping to win one or more of the 100+ raffle prizes. I went over to Taylor s for one of Pat Taylor s breakfast burritos. Then I checked out the cars and handed out our car show flyers. After the official opening of the show at 10 am, many of the participants went on the poker walk around downtown Loomis hoping to win the cash prizes for best and worst hands. A good number of local spectators came out to check out the cars. The awards were handed out at 2 pm and the rain started coming down around 5 PM. Ray Geiger

3 3 THE WOODLAND STREET CRUISERS CAR SHOW May 7th I caravanned alone to the Woodland Car Show & Cruise. I went last year also alone, I guess everyone had gone to the Gold Rush Car Show in Oroville. Julie and I have been to that one so many times, it is too bad they conflict. Anyway, the Woodland Show starts at 1 PM and runs until 8 PM, this is a new schedule, departing from their earlier time schedule of the past. Registration is from 10 AM to 1 PM, awards at 4 pm and a cruise from 6 pm to a little after 7 PM. It was a 45 minute run from home and I got there around 10:30 AM. It rained all the way there and did not stop until noon, so they had fewer cars than last year, but still had 300. It is a good show, and getting better. They gave out around 20 trophies at 4 PM. The Cruise was up and down Main Street with two rows of cars going in opposite directions and it took about 20 minutes a run. I had enough and pulled out and headed home. The cruise was a nice way to end the show. One thing that I noticed during the day was the large number of uniformed police officers on duty and the cruise had four teams of police on motorcycles leading and parked at the two ends of the cruise. I like this show, they seem to have it well organized and Woodland has a perfect set up with just one long main street with lots of shade and places to eat and shop. I will be going back if only they could schedule it on some other weekend. Ed McVey First you want one of these You leave this on the your car so everyone knows you have a winner!! So many cars, so many folks you know!

4 4 GRASS VALLEY CAR SHOW BY George Funk Karen and I met her sister( 42 Packard) at Target off Hwy 80 and motored ourselves to the Grass Valley Show. Not much to say, but the show was well-attended with a total of 356 cars present. I passed out our R & R flyers and people complemented how good the flyers looked. The downtown was loaded with people and the businesses were busy. (It's a nice venue) Mike Roby was there with the Capital City Cruisers. The awards, to me, were disappointing. 90% of the awards were given to the locals and one guy has won the same award three years in a row in the same class. I feel Rods & Relics does an unbiased job in awarding the awards at our shows. I called the Down Town Association and gave them my opinion: Why should someone drive so far to a event and not have a chance of winning an award? The weather was great and we motored home safely. Phoenix High School Car Show We were invited to put on a 2nd Car Show at Phoenix High School in Lincoln. This was during their 30 minute morning recess. We had lots of questions and conversations with the students, as to their own vehicles, as well as our asking questions of the students, too. One of the students was directed over to Gary McCoig to get answers to his questions. Gary works at Lincoln Automotive and is most knowledgeable as to auto mechanics and repairs. We had nine vehicles, including the cute 57 Morris Minor 1000 belonging to Lionel Rainman and one 55 Ford pick-up truck belonging to our own Larry Hickerson. What was appreciated about Larry s pickup was that he has no bed in the back, so everyone was able to see his running gear, exhaust pipes, and tires, etc. which added a nice visual for the students. The students provided a three-piece band which added to everyone s enjoyment. Our car show was coordinated by Nina Mazzo, a volunteer teacher who lives here in Lincoln Hills and Chuck Whitecotton, the Principal. We hope to be invited back next semester as this is a fun show to do. Dan Larsen
