2 REPORT ON EVENTS BLUE RIDGE NATIONAL DRIVING TOUR On Sunday, September 18 the day had finally arrived after more than a year of planning and hard work that the national driving tour on the Blue Ridge Pkwy. would begin. Six Early Ford V8 cars left from the McDonald s on Friendship Road heading for Clayton Georgia where we picked up four more V8 s. We then proceeded the rest of the 160 miles from Friendship Road to the Holiday Inn Express in Asheville North Carolina. There were no problems along the way although there was concern of being able to find gas due to the pipeline break. We just kept our tanks full whenever we could. The 10 of us arrived by 2 o clock in the afternoon with time to set up for the reception from 5 to 6. The tour had been planned to have no more than 30 cars in all and 30 spots were filled. However, two had to cancel before the start so we had 28 registered with 23 early Ford V-8 cars in the group. The cars ranged from a 1932 to pick up to a 1952 Victoria. We had one each 32, 34,36, 37, four 39 s, four 40s, one 48, five 1950s, four 1951 s one 1952 early Ford V-8 s. The reception was well attended and the members that came from Georgia (13), Minnesota one, Indiana one, Iowa one, Ohio two, South Carolina one, Tennessee two, North Carolina two, and four from Pennsylvania were able to get to know one another and share stories/lies about their cars. On Monday the 19 th the first day of the tour we had FOG, yet we still headed out from Asheville to Maggie Valley on the Blue Ridge Pkwy. it was about an 80-mile trip on the Parkway and side roads with lots of fog and lots of tunnels to go through. We even stopped at the Mt Pisgah country store on the Parkway for hot coffee and to let the fog lift little We also had some rain however we still arrived at our destination in Maggie Valley, The Wheels Through Time Museum. We started our tour through the museum about 1 o clock, saw lots of very interesting old motorcycles some of which were over 100 years old and many of which are still capable of running. We had a barbecue lunch on the grounds and then headed to Waynesville which was about a 20 mile drive we all had a dinner at the very cute Waynesville Inn and enjoyed our camaraderie. On the second day of the tour Tuesday the 20 th we got up early to leave Waynesville to Bryson city on modern roads in order to get to the train ride and toy train Museum by 9:30. We all had some coffee to warm ourselves and then rode the train to through the Nantahala gorge where enjoyed the view and had picnic lunch along the river. Upon getting back from the gorge we proceeded to drive on the Parkway another 40 miles to the Waynesville Inn. We went as a group to have dinner at the Maggie s Galley which had excellent fish (lots of laughing and again more camaraderie). On Wednesday the 21 st we could take our time so we spent some in downtown historic Waynesville shopping and visiting the MAST General store which is been there since the 1930s. Then we took a leisurely drive to the Mt Pisgah Inn for dinner. We arrived early enough to be able to secure window seating and enjoyed our excellent views as well as food. The only problem we had over the entire week was a boil over on one of the cars which a couple gallons of water fixed. After enjoying our incredible views, we drove another 18 miles on the Parkway back to the Asheville Holiday Inn. On the fourth day of the tour, Thursday the 22 nd, we left it as a group to drive about 40 miles to the Lake Lure Inn for a guided tour of the Inn including the music boxes and ghosts. Some proceeded also to Chimney Rock for the sights. After light lunch we then went another 25 miles to the North Carolina Folk Art Center which is been in operation since the 1970s. Then another 20 miles on the Parkway to the Holiday Inn in time for our final reception on 5 to 6 with dinner afterwards. Overall the trip including our round trip drive from and Friendship Road was about the 700 miles more or less. The tour worked very well and other tours may be planned in the future.
