2 FROM THE PREZ. over, you all jumped in again to save the day I m sure the quick response saved a lot of car damage when tents tried to become air born. Thanks again for your involvement. Sunday s attendance at the Raymond Chili/Chowder feed was appreciated by the Raymond Car Show Group. Six cars went from our club, which comprised about half of the attendance. All had a good time and some great eats not to mention some neat drawing prizes. Try to plan on attending our mini-cruise to Bundy s Drive-in in Clatskanie on May 13 th. We ll leave the Aquatic center at 5:15 pm. We ll have a good burger and a good time. Our May meeting will be held on the 15th at my shop, Helligso Lane, Astoria, OR. at 7:00 pm. See you there. Steve Jordan From the Prez Thank You All of you members who stepped up and came out to help with our 50 s Car Show. Twenty members came out for breakfast on Friday morning, preceding the show set-up. It sure made set-up fast & easy. During the event, when the wind tried to take I was in the restaurant yesterday when I suddenly realized I desperately needed to pass gas. The music was really, really loud, so I timed my gas with the beat of the music. After a couple of songs, I started to feel better. I finished my coffee, and noticed that everybody was staring at me...

3 Then I suddenly remembered that I was listening to my ipod. Lower Columbia Classic Minutes Minutes of the Regular Meeting April 17, 2014 Ross Getchell s Shop, Simonsen Rd., Astoria, Oregon The regular monthly meeting of the Lower Columbia Classic Car Club was held on Thursday, April 17, 2014 at 7:00 p.m., at Ross Getchell s Shop at Simonsen Rd, Astoria, Oregon and the President, Steve Jordan, being in the chair. The secretary, Patricia Getchell was present. The secretary read the minutes from the March 20, 2014 meeting. It was moved and seconded to approve the minutes as corrected. The motion carried. The treasurer, Burt Young distributed the profit and loss and reconciliation statements for member review. He covered current payments and income. There were no questions. Some bills were presented for payment. The secretary read the correspondence. The Social Committee reported that there is a Chili/Chowder Feed in Raymond on 4/27; we will be going to Bundy s on May 13 th, meeting at the Aquatic Center at 5:00 PM. Steve Jordan discussed his search for club jackets; nothing seems to work. Steve is looking for someone to continue the search and someone to do the embroidery of our emblem. Membership Chair, Jim Purdy, reported that he had new member packets for distribution or to be mailed. Membership cards were distributed to members in attendance all others will be mailed. The next meeting is to be at Steve Jordan s Shop on Thursday, May 15, The secretary and treasurer will not be available for this meeting. It was moved and seconded to increase the monthly drawing fee to $1.00; the motion passed. Dessert signs ups are, May-Oliver Yackley. Fred Mestrich won the drawing. The meeting adjourned 8:17 pm. Patricia Getchell, Secretary Unfinished Business Burt reported on the 50 s Cruise Reunion. Help is still needed. Members will meet Friday before setting up for the show at Stephanie s Cabin at 8:00 am. New Business Judy Jordan, on behalf of the Sunshine Committee, reported that Darlene Langlo is in the hospital. The Jordan s and Getchell s attended Chuck Tontz s memorial service. 4 FROM THE BACK SEAT The gals page Hi Doll, by Judy Jordan Club Members who need a little Sunshine The names below have been submitted by the Sunshine Committee. Those listed below are our fellow members and need you Joe White Vicki Clayton Darlene Langlo Know someone not up to speed let Judy Jordan, Sunshine Committee chair know. Judy s phone number is: (503) Recently I was reading some of the memoirs my cousin has written about her child hood, she mentioned coming to my home and playing with my storybook dolls, so that send me on a mission to see what I have. I found 2 of them in my cedar chest, I know I had more of them, but do not know what happened to them. I imagine if some of you go looking, you will find some also. Here is a little information on the storybook dolls. They are so very pretty and bring back such fond memories. Nancy Ann Abbott, the creator of the storybook dolls, was born in 1901 as Rowena Haskin. She lived in San Francisco as a child, and had a fondness for dolls that lasted her entire life. Before becoming a doll maker, she worked as an actress in Hollywood, and also as a dress designer for various actresses.

5 In 1936 the Nancy Ann Dressed Doll Company was born. In 1937 she added a partner, Les Rowland. The company s name became the familiar, Nancy Ann Storybook Dolls, Inc, in During the late 1940s, Nancy Ann Storybook Dolls was the highest volume maker of dolls in the United States! The company did very well until the late 1950 s, when Ms. Abbott was diagnosed with cancer and Mr. Roland also became ill. Quality declined during Ms. Abbott s illness and new dolls such as Barbie were becoming more popular with little girls at the same time. The company went out of business in 1965 after the death of Ms. Abbott. As for the value of the dolls, I imagine it can vary from $5.00 or $10.00 up into the $ s. There is information other company s did copy her dolls. The internet would be a great place to find out if yours is a real Nancy Ann Storybook doll. I am not sure if my dolls are the real thing, but I don t care, as I have had many years of fond memories by owning them! Words worth mentioning Last month, Patty and I hosted the club meeting at my shop. The experience was great! There was some cleaning that was done, and in preparation, we made some popcorn and supplied some beverages and a dessert was served up after the meeting. I think one of the nice things about having the meeting here was I didn t have to travel anywhere else. For those that live in Svensen/Knappa area our place was close by. For someone to travel here from Astoria it would be approximately 10ish miles. Depending on where you re coming from. I like the thought about changing up the location every once in a while. I like to see what some of the other club members shops look like, and to see what they may have in the works for projects. In June we will have another opportunity when we go to Fred and Ann Mestrich s. If you would like to Host a club meeting at your place, let our President Steve know and we can schedule. On another subject, I would like to have some articles for the Backfire. Send me an article about something you think club members would like to hear about. Here is some idea s. First or Favorite Car What was your car when you met your sweetheart? Experience of a car break down What was or is your favorite Car Show What was your favorite Car Cruise Favorite road trip From you Gal s, we have need of some articles for the Back seat from the Gal s Backfire Editor; Ross Getchell

6 50 s Cruise Reunion Car Show 39 Chevy d by Dillon Cope Took People s Choice It was damp, not too much rain, but just enough to hold down the dust! The day started with a light drizzle, got better then cleared up till around 1:00 pm when the South west wind began to make itself known. It was just wet enough for us to make good on our guarantee, you know, the one on our flyer that guarantees rain This one owner 1955 Ford F- 100 received the Larry Hall A huge Thank You is due all of the Memorial Trophy members who came out and participated A huge Thank you is due all of the members who came out and participated in making the show a success. Without our membership s hard work and our wonderful sponsors, the show would not be possible. Committee members are already looking to next year and thinking in terms of improving the event. Ernest Atkinson s 31 Ford Roadster garnered Best Host or double your fun! Although attendance was down and spectators were fewer, those who braved the elements had a good time and enjoyed themselves. For Aprils Social Event, We gathered at the Uptown Café next to O Reilly Parts store. There were approximately 20 people who came out for a bite to eat. I speak for all who attended; Great time was had by all.
