1 Volume 10 Issue 5 RODS & RELICS CAR CLUB NEWSLETTER June 2018 The Rods & Relics Car Club of Lincoln Hills is a nonprofit organization formed by individuals with an interest in: The restoration, preservation and enjoyment of collector vehicles such as Original, Antiques, Classics, Street Rods, Muscle Cars, Special Interest, Modified, and other American or American powered and 1975 or older. We use this strong interest to facilitate fundraising and community service to nonprofit organizations and people in need. Rods & Relics meet every 3rd Thursday of each month at 6:00 PM at Turkey Creek Golf Club 1525 Highway 193 Lincoln Everyone Welcome PRESIDENT S MESSAGE ~ Ray Geiger Time seems to go by fast! As I am writing my message its less than two weeks until our big Downtown Lincoln Classic Car Show on June 2. Rich Ragan and Mike Carvidi and all of their committee chairpersons have been working hard to ensure that the show runs smoothly and our participants and spectators have a great time. When you are working at the show, please be sure to thank the participants for helping to make our show a success. The day of our show we need every member to pitch in, but even before show day there is a lot of work to be done. I have been in charge of sponsors, raffle prize acquisition, and publicity. I really appreciate the help I have had from a number of our members. A number of members have picked up one or more sponsors, Dennis Malone did a great job securing at least a dozen of our sponsors and Alan Taylor has picked up the most raffle prizes. Again, thanks to all that helped. Elna Ragan has done a great job working with the Lincoln Messenger on show publicity. I had a member ask about Memorial awards in the name of members that have passed. The club only sponsors the Founder Award as a memorial to Walt Ernst. Any other memorial awards are sponsored by family members. This year Jim Alves is sponsoring an award in memory of his father. We have a number of Feel Good Shows lined up. I hope, if you are available, each of you will plan to attend at least one of these events. The residents of the care and retirement facilities really appreciate our visit. We also have a number of club promoted events including some Rod Runs that Alan Taylor is pulling together. In what activities would you like to see our club participate? We need your suggestions to help make our club one that members want to belong. Please contact any one of our board members with your thoughts and suggestions, Hope to see you Saturday, June 2, and on an upcoming Rods & Relics event. 2 2 Downtown Lincoln Car Show Update ~ Rich Ragan Our last Car Show meeting was held on Saturday, May 12. Several of our Committee Chairs were distributing flyers at Car Shows in the surrounding communities. The magnitude of this Show is amazing! There are so many details that need follow-up and coordination. Mike Carvidi and I have been most fortunate to be able to work with such a high caliber group of professional individuals. Their efforts have been very focused. Their willingness to put in countless hours and travel is greatly appreciated. Our Car Club is very lucky! The area of Pre-Registration and overseeing the On-Site Registration took us into unknown territory. George Funk and Judy Rezendes stepped up and made the unknown known! I predict a very smooth Registration activity on the day of our Car Show. The Pre-Registration and On-Site check-in stations will each have three Club members checking in the participants. In addition, George is the Car Show Treasurer and also responsible for all of the Vendor-related activities. Ed Branco, Parking, and Larry Hickerson, Judging, have both been able to assemble a seasoned group of Club members to carry out their important duties. Laree Quinn, VFW Auxiliary President, and her team are working hard to ensure a successful Raffle. Terry Fink and Julie McVey have assembled a variety of children s activities: a face painter, a Disney cartoon artist, Home Depot crafts, and games with prizes. Ed McVey has been relentless in his efforts to ensure a variety of trophies and plaques for the 68 award winners. He has done a great job on our logo and T-Shirts. Ray Geiger, and his team of Super Salesmen put in a HUGE EFFORT in securing our Show and Trophy Sponsors, and raffle donations. Elna Ragan diligently coordinated publicity in the Lincoln News Messenger and the Sun Senior News. My sincere thanks to all the Chairs and their Team Members for doing an outstanding job! It has been a most rewarding and learning journey! We have over 40 Club members contributing their expertise and hard work on behalf of our Car Show. Those of you who were unable to help, are invited to come to the Car Show and see what you missed out on! In checking the weather, I see that it appears that we will have temperatures in the 80 s, a sunny day, and a slight breeze. I look forward to seeing ALL OF YOU at the Car Show! A Blast from the Past ~ Rods & Relics Car Show Raffle 2009 Karen Funk, Sue Ernst and Carol Larsen

3 Car Show Promotion ~ Ray Geiger I am usually busy attending car shows in May to hand out flyers promoting our car show. The first week of May was a busy one. Wednesday afternoon Pat and I went up to Mel s in Auburn in the Charges since she would not go that far in the 29. We had a nice dinner and after that I put our flyers in the cars attending the Show & Shine. Thursday, I went up to Denny s in Newcastle in the 29 to attend the Lions show and distribute our flyers. Friday it was down to Taqueria El Festival in Sacramento for the show hosted by the Mean Machines. They had a good turnout of about 50 or more cars, mostly from the South Sacramento area. Saturday many of our club members attended the Car Show and Chili Cook Off hosted by Century 21 in Lincoln. George Funk was kind enough to volunteer to drive up to Grass Valley to hand out flyers at the Downtown Grass Valley Car Show. He told me they had over 250 cars that would qualify for our show, in addition to a number of foreign or newer cars. On the way back to home, he stopped by the Thunder Bolts show in Rocklin and handed out another 55 flyers. Sunday morning while Ed McVey took our flyers down to the show in Fair Oaks, I headed down to Elk Grove in the 29 to attend the Elk Grove Western Festival Classic Car Show. They had over 200 participants; it was a great day for a car show. There were some really nice cars including a 36 Ford 4 door convertible driven by club members, Jerry & Connie Annis. This is a fun show and a nice venue. During the second week in May, I headed up to Auburn for the Friday Cruise before going up to Oroville for the Gold Rush Show Saturday. George Funk took flyers to the Woodland Show. There is a lot of work that a number of our members do behind the scenes to help make our show successful. Bayside Church Car Show ~ Alan Taylor Hello everyone, a busy weekend of June 19th and 20th, we had back to back car shows to go, hard for me at times to go back to back. After a good turn out for the Sat., show, numbers dwindled quite a bit for Sunday. Bayside Church on Stanford Ranch Road had their fifth car in a row, I had no idea it had 5 year history.on Sunday the show their show has grown to 230 cars, it gets bigger each year. We had three members attend, Ed McVey, Ray Geiger, Chuck Ellis, Kurt Bartley and myself. They are very generous and put on a good show for a parking lot show. Great facility, free coffee and pastries in the morning and three different food trucks to purchase a lunch. A very good raffle selection to try for, music, and a lot of spectators roaming around. The show is open to all cars, so you get to see a big variety of cars. The weather was a little cool in the morning and warmed up after the overcast burned out. As usual, Ray was working hard, passing out flyers and signing people up for our car show. Brad, I mean Ed, was taking photos of the cars. All in all a busy and great weekend to get the cars out. Spring Fever - Cruisin for Kids ~ Ray Geiger The Cappuccino Cruisers hosted Spring Fever Cruisin for Kids car show benefitting the Shriners Hospitals on Saturday, April 28 th. Since the flyer said registration opened at 8:00 a.m., I figured I could sleep in and get up when the spirit moved me. When I arrived at Lowes in Citrus Heights, I found club members Marlin Anderson, Ed McVey, Dennis Malone and Jared Hawkins were already there; they directed me to an open parking space next to Jared s yellow coupe. The weather seemed to change every few minutes. It was on with my jacket one minute, then off again when the sun broke through the clouds. This happened numerous times during the day and although there were dark rain clouds many times, we did not get any rain. There were a number of vendors, but no food vendors. Luckily, there was a hot dog vendor out in front of the Home Depot. Her dogs and polish sausages were good and she did a brisk business. When award time came it was obvious that whoever did the judging had good taste, since my 29 won runner up in the Hot Rod class.

4 Fair Oaks Downtown Car Show ~ Ed McVey So left the house at 5:45AM for Strikes to meet up with who ever might get up at this stupid hour to go to a car show, there were no takers. So left strikes and made my way to Fair Oakes, got there at 6:35AM and there was a short line into the main street, just took a few minutes and was on my way to a parking spot way down to almost the end of the street, last year So got here later and was parked closer to the center, guess I'm going to have to set the ole alarm clock even earlier next year. Got parked between a Ford & a MOPAR, both nice cars, & nice guys, we had the shade till about noon, then we moved across the street & settled in with a flock of guys & talked about cars, what else would we talk about. Nice thing about talking to new guys you get to blemish your old stories somewhat. The weather was like the day before in Lincoln at the C21 show, perfect. They must have had 255 cars, I saw one trying to find a place to park around 9:30, good luck with that. The card in the window had 242 on it, never saw it again. Interesting show all the shops are open, including a Bakery/Deli with great coffee, & fantastic cinnamon rolls with about a gallon of frosting on them, yum yum, had two, don't tell Julie. The awards were handed out around 2:30 & we were on our way home by 3:15. They gave out about 16, mostly first & second place trophy's, by years, & then best paint, interior, motor, two best of shows, all trophy's were wall plaques & very nice. In spite of not winning a trophy with my Fabulous Stude, I like this show, I kid you not, it's one of my favorites. Century 21 Select Real Estate Lincoln Car Show ~ Ed McVey This show is just minutes away for just about everyone in our Car Club and not too surprising that we had a great turn out, I counted 18 club cars, I might have missed a couple, hope not, took photos of all, let me know if I missed your car, they are on the web site. The weather was a little cool for about the first hour and then perfect the rest of the day. It would be nice if we have a day like it for our show in June. This show is growing, I would guess that there were 60 cars there and could handle another 20 or so. There is so much going on, chili cook off, raffle, free root beer floats, even a birthday party with cakes, yes, two cakes, one chocolate, won't tell how many pieces I had, or Julie. There were a few food venders, good ole Dave's Dogs, he's everywhere. Also, the Crazy Gringo, a new one, I like it. This show is so organized by the good folks at C21, and runs so smoothly through the day, you wish it would keep going. I counted three bands, one right after the other might have been more, but all good things must end, and so, they gave out the awards. Our newest member, Wayne Sloan, won a trophy, big trophy for his 1918 Olds Touring Car, how's that? Our newest member wins a trophy for the oldest car, and yes, they overlooked my fabulous Stude, I kid you not.

5 By Weekend Motoring in Nevada, Placer & Sacramento Counties ~ George Funk Wow! It must be Car Show time. With three major car shows on Saturday May 5th... which one to go to. Well since my 41 Graham was visiting the California Auto Museum until Sunday, I decided to venture up to Grass Valley to hand out our Car Show flyers. We are behind in our registration for our show. This is always a great show with lots of small shops to add to the venue if you get sick of looking at cars. There were over 220 American hot rods & muscle cars and then about 20 plus of those non- American foreign ones. Oh well. I had three favorites. An unbelievable 1933 Buick Coupe with rumble seat, a 1958 Buick Super 8 and last a 1933 Black Willy s convertible with a tricked out blown 502 Chevy. I passed out my flyers and had some left over, so I decided to stop by the Thunderbolt show on the way home. That s what happens when there are too many shows on one day. Ralph Garcia said there were only 55 cars there. I started the day with 300 flyers. After two shows I still had flyers to pass out, so car show three was the Century 21 Show in Lincoln. Ray Geiger had this show done, so after talking to a few of the R & R members I made it home. My weekend was not over. I had to pick up my Graham at the Cal Auto Museum, so Karen drove me and Bud Van Cott, (he had one of his Datsun 240 Z s there), down to be there by 8:00am. All went OK and we headed home. I was the leader and about Antelope I looked in my mirror and Bud and his Z were no longer in sight. Thus Karen & I turned around at Riverside and started looking for Bud. We found him just before Greenback on the side of the road. Well Bud discovered that his fuel pump went out. It was just over two hours later that the AAA truck made it. As you all know it s no fun breaking down and trying to talk & listen on a cell phone off the freeway. Well that s it. The car season is off and running.

6 Roseville Care Center Feel Good Show ~ Alan Taylor Well, the club launched it's first Feel Good Show of the year on Tuesday, May 22nd. It was at the Roseville Care Center on Cirby Way, right off of Sunrise Blvd. I had left off the destination in my original , I had my reasons, won't bore you with those. We all met up at Strikes, we had the usual suspects, won't mention them, you guys know who you are, but I was glad to see two new members who came along, Rex Nicodemus in his beautiful 57 Chevy Convertible and Dennis Majors I MEAN MAGURES IS HOW HE SPELLS IT, VERY COOL in his very cool old school look iconic 32 Ford Roadster. As usual we had a discussion on the route to take, I was concerned about Rich driving his T-Bucket on the freeway, but he said no worries, just keep the speed under 80, so I said no problem. An easy drive over, we all stayed together and got there safely. Waiting for us was coffee and donuts after we parked the cars and hunkered down. We only had 11 cars, but with one of the smaller parking areas of the facilities we visit each year, we were able to spread out nicely. After gorging ourselves on donuts, the senior residents and a lot of staff members came out to admire, tell war stories and take photos with our cars. Ralph Lacaze was seen flirting with the women as he rolled them around on a tour of the cars. It makes me feel good to see us brighten up the day for some senior citizens, one of the many good things our club represents. As the day progressed, an unexpected vendor showed up trying to solicit their in home senior care service. They had 8 boxes of pizza and drinks, a great pre-lunch snack was now provided. As we neared lunch time, we all feasted on barbequed hamburgers, potato and macaroni salad and of course soft drinks. The food was good, a very gracious host took great care of us, while we were there. After some relaxing from lunch, we all started to depart and go our way. The weather was perfect, not hot at all. I would personally like to thank everyone who took time out of their lives to help brighten the day up for some senior citizens, some who unfortunately are stuck there and sometimes forgotten. They all had smiles on their faces and really enjoyed our cars and company. TREASURER S REPORT George Funk George reported the May 2018 month and year-to-date activity and balances for both the club and car show accounts. T-shirts on sale for $10.00 & Henley s $ There are 191 cars registered down 30% as of last year. George suggested we use some of the club money for a free lunch when attending shows to generate club participation. VICE-PRESIDENT S REPORT John Cunningham John reported that the emissions bill is dead. The bill that was stopped, AB1745, would have prohibited the Department of Motor Vehicles from registering new vehicles unless it was a zero emissions vehicle, beginning on January 1, Under the proposed law, a new car with an internal combustion engine could not legally be driven in California after that date. Despite the availability of ZEVs, a substantial publicly funded rebate program and access to HOV lanes, ZEVs account for only 1.9 percent of the over 2,000,000 new passenger vehicles sold in California in Many of these sales are repeated sales to the same households, according to the UC Davis Institute of Transportation, raising the question of whether plug-in vehicles are experiencing widespread consumer rejection. Some believe a ban on internal combustion engines is an attempt to force consumers into buying vehicles that they have decided are not best suited to their needs. Yvonne Carter, the photographer, won t be available until the end of the month; she would like to attend one of our meetings. MEMBERSHIP REPORT Judy Rezendes Judy reported 67 paid memberships. The club is now conducting a raffle of 50/25/25. This will include 50% to a member, 25% to 2 nd place member, and 25% to the club. Tickets are $1.00 each. A new roster was also sent out to members.
