1 Rāwene Community Newsletter 1" 21 JULY 2016 NGA PANUI O TE ROOPU HUIHUI O RĀWENE RĀWENE COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER Action over drift, engagement over withdrawal, deliberation and debate over silence and denial Local filmmaker makes waves Do you know the signs that a tsunami is about to hit? Do you know what to do next? That s what award-winning movie director Florian Habicht is asking Far North school students and he wants to see their answers in a three-minute movie. The task is dubbed the Shortest Ever Tsunami Movie Competition and is being promoted by Far North Civil Defence Emergency Management. It will form part of a nation-wide civil defence tsunami practice called Exercise Tangaroa, which will be held over three days on August 31, September 14 and September 28. Exercise Tangaroa aims to test the preparedness of government agencies to a tsunami that is generated relatively close to New Zealand and would make landfall in less than three hours. The Shortest Ever Tsunami Movie Competition is open to Far North school students only. All entries must contain three elements: The sound of a tsunami warning siren, a natural tsunami warning sign and a grab n go kit. Mr Habicht will judge the entries and prizes will include helicopter and boat rides, a BBQ and a camera, which will be awarded to the winning school. Mr Habicht says he is excited to see how Far North students will include these three elements in their short films. There are no limits and I will be looking for creativity and fun in the entries. Far North Civil Defence Emergency Management Team Leader Bill Hutchinson said the film competition is a fun way for students to strengthen their civil defence preparedness. We are encouraging students to learn the natural warning signs of an approaching tsunami and to know what to do next. Our aim is to increase community resilience. Florian Habicht is well-known in the Far North. He grew up in the Bay of Islands and won national recognition with his 2004 documentary Kaikohe Demolition which won him Best Digital Feature at the New Zealand Screen Awards. Schools interested in taking part in the Shortest Ever Tsunami Movie Competition should contact Far North Civil Defence officer Ann-Marie Houng Lee by phoning or be ing Ann-Marie.HoungLee@fndc.govt.nz Prizes will be awarded in three categories: primary, intermediate and secondary. The competition ends on 30 September. CONTENTS Tsunami movie competition. 1 Marae hui. Dental Service. Market Days. 2 Rawene Library news. mainly music celebrates 5 years. 5 Rāwene Community Newsletter 5 21 JULY 2016 Jokes of the Week Paddy and Murphy are havin' a pint in the pub, when some scuba divers come on the TV. Paddy says, "Murphy, why is it them deep sea divers always sit on the side of the boat with them air tanks on their backs, and fall backwards out of the boat?" Murphy thinks for a minute then says, "That's easy. It's 'cos if they fell forwards, they'd still be in the blinkin' boat!" In a Catholic school cafeteria, a nun places a note in front of a pile of apples, "Only take one. God is watching." Further down the line is a pile of cookies. A little boy makes his own note, "Take all you want. God is watching the apples. Two students were arguing when their teacher entered the classroom. The teacher says, Why are you arguing? One boy answers, We found a ten dollar bill and decided to give it to whoever tells the biggest lie. "You should be ashamed of yourselves," said the teacher, "When I was your age I didn t even know what a lie was." The boys gave the ten dollars to the teacher. Rāwene Golf Club Gidday Golfers, It s good to hear our club members are going out to play other courses. Remember that Rawene Golf Club members have reciprocal rights at most of the Northland golf courses (in other words ½ Green fees). We are still at the club each Sunday 11am doing odd jobs around the course, weather permitting, followed by lunch. Sorry haven t heard any results of Ladies Pennants. JOKE: Three brothers wanted to give their blind mom a birthday gift. The first got her a big beautiful house. The second got her a brand new luxury vehicle with a driver. The third got her a talking parrot to keep her company. When they all got together, they wanted to know which gift she liked best. She said they were all great but she thanked her third son because she liked the chicken dinner best. Just a thought: A few decades ago we had Johnny Cash, Bob Hope and Steve Jobs. Now we have no Cash, no Hope and no Jobs. Please don't let Kevin Bacon die. 9 Rāwene Community Newsletter " 9 21 JULY 2016 Organic groups unite Members of the Soil & Health Association of NZ Inc and the New Zealand Biological Producers and Consumers Society Inc (BioGro Society) have voted to merge the two organisations. This means that BioGro will transfer its assets to Soil & Health, on winding up on 30 September. The merger brings the skills and resources of the two charities into one strong, unified organic sector body. Soil & Health will become the proud new owner of BioGro NZ Ltd, New Zealand s largest organic certification agency. This will empower Soil & Health to carry out its vital education and advocacy work for healthy soil, healthy food and healthy people. BioGro NZ Ltd will remain a separate company. It retains its own board of directors and independence as a company, with the excellent reputation it has built up over 33 years. It s time to get really serious about lifting organics to the next level, said Gaz Ingram, chair of BioGro Society. Organic needs to become the new normal. It offers clean, green and practical solutions to many of our current problems, including environmental, health and climate change issues. The refreshed organisation will promote these with renewed vigour. If we and future generations are going to survive and thrive, we urgently need to shift to producing food and other products that are organic, high value, safe, sustainable, GE-free and ethical, said Marion Thomson, co-chair of Soil & Health. By joining together we combine our strengths in leadership and governance, authenticity, public good advocacy, and commitment to healthy organic food and farming. The Soil & Health Association retains its name, as does BioGro NZ Ltd. Soil & Health s flagship magazine Organic NZ will continue to be a strong and independent media voice for all things organic: food, gardening, farming and lifestyles. Scoop Media Court ruling ensures protection of QEII Trust land Federated Farmers supports a recent ruling in the Court of Appeal after a four-year legal battle between the Queen Elizabeth II (QEII) National Trust and a property developer. The decision assures enduring protection of special places under Queen Elizabeth II National Trust open space covenants even when ownership is surrendered. Federated Farmers environment spokesman Chris Allen said the decision ensured that a new landowner could not get open space covenants lifted so they (can) build on the land, in this case a developer wanting to build lifestyle blocks. "As landowners, farmers are some of the biggest contributors to environmental protection in New Zealand. "Farmers care deeply about the environment and leave a protected legacy for future generations. Our members are extremely proud of their work and achievements on their farms to protect and enhance biodiversity," Mr Allan said. "This latest ruling in the Coromandel shows open space covenants as an excellent mechanism for protecting land; even better than District Plans and arguably more than National Parks." The QEII National Trust was set up in the 1970s, when a visionary group of farmers came together to investigate ways they could protect special natural and cultural sites on their land after they were gone. These landowners were the driving force behind the establishment of the QEII National Trust, which was set up in 1977 by an Act of Parliament to deliver on their aspirations. Federated Farmers strongly support and acknowledges the existing investment in its partnership with QEII working with landowners to enhance and protect our special places and things. Federated Farmers was instrumental in setting up the QEII National Trust and is an existing trustee.
