2 DINOSAUR FOOTPRINTS: A STORY OF DISCOVERY Exhibition 5-30 September, FREE In September, Hutt City Libraries is hosting a nationally-touring exhibition of 70 million-yearold dinosaur footprints discovered in northwest Nelson. They are the first dinosaur footprints ever found in New Zealand! The exhibition is brought to you by GNS Science and principal sponsor New Zealand Oil and Gas. Dinosaur Footprints: A Story of Discovery Hear Dr Greg Browne talk about this exciting and important discovery and explain the science behind it. Tuesday 6 September, 6pm-7pm Fossil Hunter: Uncovering the Fascinating World of Fossils James Crampton, author of The Kiwi Fossil Hunter s Handbook, on what fossils tell us about the life and times of dinosaurs. Everyone welcome. Thursday 8 September, 6pm-7pm The Last Day of the Dinosaurs Hear Dr. Karyne Rogers talk about what happened to the dinosaurs. See and touch a piece of rock from the last day the dinosaurs lived and learn how to make your own earthquake measuring device! Ages 7+ Wednesday 14 September, 5pm-6pm 3D Kids Workshops - Dinosaurs Print your own simple 3D dinosaur object to take home! Workshops are $10 per pair (one child and one caregiver). 3 DINOSAUR FOOTPRINTS: A STORY OF DISCOVERY Dinosaur Book Launch Hutt City Libraries, Paper Plus and Potton & Burton invite you to the launch of From moa to dinosaurs with author Gillian Candler, and illustrator Ned Barraud. Drinks and nibbles provided. Books will be available for purchase on the night. Tuesday 20 September, 6pm-7pm Dinosaur Movie Join us after school and watch a movie about dinosaurs! For more information about the movie, phone on Thursday 22 September, 4pm-6pm Stop-Go Animation Workshop Learn how to make a simple stop-go animation and create a short dinosaur movie. Spaces are limited. Registrations are essential. For ages Register online at library.huttcity.govt.nz. Tuesday 27 September, 10am-2pm Reading to Dinosaurs Our very special resident dinosaurs are touring our libraries during September. For dates and times of when you can read to a dinosaur visit library.huttcity.govt.nz. Design a Dinosaur Competition 5-30 September - all ages We ve found a dinosaur egg but aren t sure what kind of dinosaur might hatch! Imagine what you think it will look like and be in to win dino-tastic prizes donated by Toy World and Friends of Hutt City Libraries. Grab an entry form at your local library or from library.huttcity.govt.nz. Dinosaur Sleepover Kids can bring their teddy or soft toy to the library and leave it overnight, to be cared for by one of our resident dinosaurs, who will not under any circumstances eat the other toys no matter how juicy and tempting. 4 SUSTAINABLE LIVING SERIES Grow Your Own Seedlings Growing your own seedlings is rewarding and easy! It s also a great way to save money, add variety to your garden and grow as many or as few plants as you need. Saturday 10 September, 11am-12noon Saturday 10 September, 1pm-2pm Reducing Food Waste Learn how to reduce your weekly bills significantly by eliminating food waste. Get the most out of your ingredients and eat healthier in the process! Covers shopping, storage and meal preparation. Saturday 16 September, 1.30pm-2.30pm Urban Farming Earn $80,000 per year on 2/3 of an acre of land you don t own? Sound impossible?? Hear the story of urban farmer Curtis Stone and find out why it s not. For more information visit library.huttcity.govt.nz STEPPING UP COMPUTER CLASSES - TERM 3 Stepping UP computer classes are for Hutt City residents with basic, or no computer skills. Classes are offered at Naenae, Petone, Taita, Wainuiomata, and War Memorial. Registrations for term 3 are now open and are essential. Register for classes at your local library, visit library.huttcity.govt.nz or by phoning HUTT TIMEBANK INFORMATION SESSION Timebanking is a way of exchanging time and services using 'time' rather than money as payment. Hear how it's working in Hutt City and how you can get involved to get help with stuff and share your time! Monday 12 September, 10.30am LAW FOR LUNCH TENANCY AND YOU Got a damp house? Unresponsive landlord? Learn what the law says when it comes to your tenancy at this free information session run by Community Law Wellington and Hutt Valley. Tuesday 20 September, 12.30pm-1.30pm

5 SCHOOL HOLIDAYS Kids can tinker away at lots of cool stuff during the September/October school holidays! Decorate the temporary Stokes Valley Library with lots of woolly wonders, experiment with mixing colour, build with Lego, find out what an mbot is, create fash from trash and lots more! All school holiday events are FREE and aimed at ages ROBOTICS WORKSHOPS Have a go with our Lego Mindstorm EV3 robotics kits! You ll need to work together to solve a challenge by constructing the robot building the code to program it. Monday 26 September, 10-1pm or 2-5pm Saturday 8 October, 10-1pm or 2-5pm Workshops are $25 per person and for ages Spaces are limited. Visit your local library to register. STOKES VALLEY TEMPORARY LIBRARY While the new Stokes Valley Hub is under construction Stokes Valley Library will be at a temporary location. Our last day at the current library is 15 September and the library will be closed from closed September. From Monday 19 September you can visit us at the new temporary library at: Masonic Lodge Hall 162 Stokes Valley Road You ll find the same staff and the same opening hours just at a new location! For updates on programmes and events at the temporary library please check library.huttcity.govt.nz. Final Farwell You are invited to attend the final farewell for the Stokes Valley hall and library before the construction of the new Stokes Valley Hub begins. Julia Stuart will reveal how she went about writing Half a World Away: Eastbourne in Wartime , due to be published in November. Thursday 1 September, 11am Discover the Lower Hutt Cemeteries Database Chris Gousmett, Hutt City Council s Corporate Information Manager, will talk about the cemeteries database, the challenges encountered in creating it, and the sources used to collect and verify the data. Monday 12 September, 12noon Researching Property Records Join Archivist, Jennie Henton, for an introduction and explanation on the types of records held at Hutt City Council Archives (including property records) and how you can access them. Saturday 17 September, 1pm Glimpses of Lost Graves in the Hutt Hear about the television series Lost Graves, a collaboration between local historian and author, Warwick Johnston, and film-maker, Marguerite Renaud, using cemeteries as a gateway to stories of our past, and how our national identity was shaped.
