3 What is GNCTR? The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) is the largest student run engineering competition in Canada. This year it is being held in Edmonton, Alberta from January 30 th to February 3 rd, The annual competition includes a technical exhibit, presentations, and multiple racing events extending over a 5-day period. Teams will be judged on various aspects of their toboggan such as its speed, braking and steering ability in a slalom and compete in the ultimate King of the Hill Tournament. Dating back to 1975, this adaption of the American Concrete Canoe Race brings together over 450+ engineering students from technical institutions across Canada. Students will be given the opportunity to apply and develop their skills in design and creativity, technical writing, networking, and management. What is a Concrete Toboggan? A concrete toboggan consists of a concrete running surface, a structural frame, breaking and steering system all while weighing under 350 pounds. Competitors are challenged to design and build a toboggan which can carry 5 riders safely through multiple racing events. Safety is a number one priority for all teams and is taken into much consideration during the design process of the toboggan. Teams are encouraged to complete a Pre-Job Safety Inspection form prior to performing any construction works. In addition, each team must submit a technical safety report detailing their structural design and how they expect the toboggan to behave in a crash situation. At the competition, a final safety inspection is performed to permit teams to participate in the racing events.

4 Why us in the GNCTR? A sponsorship would allow our Memorial University team to continue to compete in GNCTR. At last year s GNCTR our team successfully won Best New Team and People s choice award, sponsoring our team would help us continue our success and reach for higher goals in this year s competition. It would provide us with means to purchase raw materials to construct the toboggan, shipment of the toboggan to the competition in Edmonton, Alberta, and help fund many other expenses indicated in the cost breakdown estimated below. A sponsorship with Memorial University s concrete toboggan team would also provide many benefits for your company such as national exposure to over 500 students travelling from across Canada. Many of the GNCTR participants will be entering the workforce within the next few years with eagerness to work for companies that are both successful in their business practices and invested in the education of future engineers. Additionally, the GNCTR attracts numerous members of industry, media, and the public. The technical exhibition, as well as the actual racing competitions of the toboggans is open for everyone to enjoy. At the technical exhibition, each team displays their toboggan and design information while giving a brief presentation to the presiding judges. In the past, the Discovery Channel, CTV, CBC, The Rick Mercer Report and CityTV have covered the GNCTR competition which gives even more exposure to your company. The competition is a valuable technical experience and a professional networking opportunity, so it is important to us that our entire team can attend.

The size your company s logo displayed will increase depending on the sponsorship level with the largest being a Platinum and the smallest being a donor.
