1 Colonial Virginia Council proudly presents the Jamestown Extravaganza an 18-month program Celebrating 400 Years of Settlement May 1, 2006 thru October 21, 2007 Dear Jamestown Extravaganza Participant: It is with extreme pride and pleasure that we present you with this booklet to use in the recognition of the 400 th Anniversary of the settlement of Jamestown. As this great nation celebrates it s founding, you will be involved in one of the biggest and most memorable celebrations in America. We have sculpted an 18-month program with Jamestown Extravaganza stops that will let you learn about our country s beginnings. Our local area has a wide breadth of historical places that allows a peek into our heritage and past. Jamestown Extravaganza allows you to trace the paths our ancestors took when they colonized America. As you travel from one Jamestown Extravaganza stop to another, learn what you can as you imagine yourself being involved in these vast achievements. Who knows? One day this could lead to you becoming a part of the next step in colonization, Mars. Whether you do or not, there is great excitement awaiting you in your journey along the trails of our proud ancestors. We are re-introducing our Historic Triangle trails. From October 19-21, 2007, we invite you to participate in our gala festivity, Jamestown Expedition. This is an event the whole family can share with you. We intend to have re-enactors and displays, as well as many challenging activities and games in which you can participate. The Jamestown Expedition weekend will conclude with a patriotic and historical pageant you won t want to miss. We hope that you, your unit, and your family have a great time this coming year. Be sure to have your Jamestown Extravaganza booklet signed for all the projects you complete. An adventure of a lifetime is waiting. Get started today. See you at the Jamestown Expedition. Have a safe journey getting there! For the Colonial Virginia Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Dean S. Canavos Herb Smith Dick Collins President Commissioner Scout Executive

7 Historic Trails Colonial Virginia Council invites you to hike our Historic Triangle trails. You and your Scouts will take part in one of the most exciting local-council historic trail programs. We offer three hands-on, interpretive programs that will help you offer a high-quality program for your Scouts. Please wear your official Scout uniform. After completing the trail(s), please visit our Scout Shop at Jefferson Avenue in Newport News to pick up your participation patch ($2.25), or you may mail in the participation form in the leaders guide. 1. Jamestown - In 1606, three British ships set sail for America with 144 adventurers on board. They arrived in Cape Henry (Virginia Beach) in 1607, and finally settled in Jamestown. This colony began the first permanent colony in Virginia. To complete this program and earn the patch you will: Look around the Visitor's Center See a historic film Walk around the old town site. Drive the Island Loop. COST: $ 5.00 entrance fee at tour. 2. WILLIAMSBURG - The capital of Virginia moved from Jamestown to Williamsburg in 1699, and from this became the state capital during the "colonial days". In 1862 the Civil War brought national events to Williamsburg during the peninsula campaign. Then the restoration period began in 1926 when Reverend W.A.R. Goodwin shared a vision with David Rockefeller to purchase the historic Williamsburg homes to be restored to their original condition so visitors could appreciate the importance of this era. The Williamsburg tour is designed to avoid the expense and delays of the "official" tour. This historic trail is free and will take you to: The Governor's Palace The College of William & Mary Bruton Parrish Church The Public Gaol 15 houses The Capitol The Public Hospital other local sites 3. YORKTOWN - Just 23 miles from Jamestown Island is the site of the surrender of Lord Cornwallis' British Army to the colonial patriots in In 1930 President Herbert Hoover established a National Park in Yorktown. There are three parts to this program: See a film - the Yorktown Visitor Center has a 16-minute film titled "Siege At Yorktown". After seeing the film you will need to answer some questions. Walk through the museum - see the historic artifacts. Walk the battlefield stations - there are 10 stations to be visited. COST: $ 5.00 entrance fee at tour. 7
