When the rst attack happened I was sitting in a rst responder class during my second year of law enforcement school at Alexandria Technical College. We started watching live feed and watched in real-time when the second plane hit. It was clear to me at that point, I would be activated, said Brad Kadlec, Benton County Sheriff s Deputy and K-9 Handler who served in the Air Force National Guard 133rd Airlift Wing in security enforcement. Four coordinated attacks were executed on Sept. 11, Nineteen men hijacked four passenger airlines under the directive of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. The planes crashed into a eld near Shanksville, PA (on its way to Washington, D.C.), the Pentagon and the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan. Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives in the deadliest terrorist strike on United States soil. Following the attacks, Kadlec was immediately activated for two years. Although being alerted twice for overseas deployment, he fortunately remained stateside and served from Fort Snelling and MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Fla. The biggest feeling I had after watching the footage from the classroom was that I wanted to get out and do something, but being so far away it wasn t so simple, he said. Kadlec remembers how stressful the days were following the attacks. He had trained and prepared, but the members of his unit worked hour shifts, six days on and one day off, for weeks on end. We were unsure if the threat to the United States was over are we at risk for another attack? An act of terrorism brings to the forefront our security and this could have happened to anyone or anywhere at any number of targets, Kadlec said. Kadlec also remembers the nation s response. As with any great war, when you have one common enemy, the country had one focus and one goal. It was a What do farmers do for you? On Sept. 11, 2001, Stephen Siller (for whom the foundation was named) had just nished his shift with Brooklyn s Squad 1, on his way to play golf with his brothers, when he got word of the rst plane hitting the Twin Towers over his scanner. He called his wife Sally and asked her to relay the message to his brothers that he d catch up with them later and returned to get his gear. In 2002, after a last-effort appeal by the fair board, the building began a transformation and was restored to its original condition in time for the 2003 fair. It took on the name Heritage Building and has been the main exhibit location for the Benton County Historical Society along with the Benton County Master Gardeners and Tri-County Beekeepers. Poultry returns to the fair PHOTOS BY NATASHA BARBER The Janorschke family (from left) Sophia, 14, Abbie, 18 and Jake, 13, enjoy showing their poultry projects at the Benton County Fair. They are members of the Duelm 4-H Club. Janorschke family looks forward to showing birds by NATASHA BARBER STAFF WRITER SAUK RAPIDS The Benton County Fair is less than one week away and soon 4-H participants and animals will be ooding the barns and grounds, preparing their animals in hopes of receiving a purple ribbon. After being absent in 2015, poultry, birds and all feathered friends will make their return to the Benton County Fair. According to Benton County 4-H Coordinator Heidi Anderson, as of the June 11 deadline, the Benton County Fair had 85 4-H entries, six Cloverbud entries and an additional 25 general exhibitors who plan on participating, a number slightly up from its 2014 registrants. As Avian Flu episodes spread across 23 counties by May 2015, the Minnesota Board of Animal Health made a crucial decision for the safety of poultry producers and cancelled all bird exhibits at county and state fairs, trade shows, petting zoos and other bird gatherings. Poultry projects were more than three months underway for participants, but the threat of crosscontamination was haunting to an industry which had already lost nine million birds in the endemic. The Board of Animal Health rescinded their decision Nov. 30, I was excited when they announced poultry would be allowed again, said 18-yearold Abbie Janorschke of Clear Lake. I m more used to the project, so I knew it would be easier than showing dairy like I did last year. The children of Mitch and Sue Janorschke Abbie, Sophia, and Jake were just some of the participants affected by the state-wide decision. They had been involved in poultry projects for about six years and had been invited more than once to the Minnesota State Fair for their prizewinning breeding pens and egg layers. We were all disappointed, but we all found projects to do so we could still participate in the fair, said 14-year old Sophia. Because the Benton County Small Animals Committee did not want to disappoint their poultry participants and felt the need to support the industry during its unexpected crisis, they created a framework for 4-H participants to compete at the Sophia holds a New Hampshire Red rooster which she will pair with a hen for an entry in the breeding pen class. fair without birds present. They also allowed the existing enrollees an additional two-week extension to enroll in other livestock and educational projects. But when the three members of the Duelm 4-H Club heard the news this past December, they quickly began planning for their poultry The Janorschke s ordered New Hampshire Red and Black Star chickens for their 2016 projects. We were hesitant at rst, but not enough to not order. We aren t exposed to a lot of birds so we don t have that underlying fear that we could have loss, Abbie said. The students, who recently moved from their home in Foley to a rural farm, decided what birds they would order at the beginning of the year. They ordered about 40 birds (half of what they would normally) because of the lack of space to start the chicks during their move and received them in late February. This year they will compete in the breeding pen class with their New Hampshire Red roosters and hens and brown egg layer class with their Black Star chickens. They also have a few specialty birds, a Cochin, an Ameraucana and a Brahma that they may submit for open class. I enjoy knowing people are going to be able to look at my birds again, Sophia said. I enjoy showing poultry more than anything else because I have the experience and knowledge. And I like being around chickens they can be good companions. Established in 1974 as part of the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, the Raptor Center rehabilitates approximately 800 sick or injured birds of prey each year while helping to identify emerging environmental issues related to raptor health and populations. While the center does their best to rehabilitate all birds, some have extensive injuries which prohibit them from being released back into the wild. The Raptor Center currently houses roughly 30 raptors for educational purposes and reaches over 200,000 people each year through public education programs and events like the ones which will be featured at the fair. The Raptor Center will be bringing a bald eagle and three other birds of prey usually owls, hawks or falcons to the fairgrounds and will educate the community on the raptors of Minnesota, their role in the environment and the positive and negative impacts humans can have in their lives. Each program will last one hour.
