5 Year Overnights in Valais Change to last year % 214/ / / / / Outlook The economy is in a severe stagflation with no prospects of a speedy recovery. Inflation is just under 11%, and Brazil s economy could shrink in the next three years by 8%. It would then be the most severe and longest recession in Brazil in a century. Brazil s economy in 218 will be back where it was in 23 before the boom period when Goldman Sachs catapulted Brazil in the league of world economic powers as part of the BRIC countries. Brazil already lost its status as a safe debtor by Fitch and S&P. Moody s is also likely to demote Brazil bonds to junk status soon. But austerity measures have little chance of passing Congress. The debt could grow to 9% of the gross domestic product by 218. Brazil is heading for a debt crisis as in the early eighties. The Brazilian real has lost nearly 5% of the value against the US dollar and the euro. Consumer sentiment has also deteriorated sharply, which is also reflected in travel behavior. Especially the United States have lost, because in the days of a strong real the US were a very popular shopping destination. Europe is currently still quite stable, France has lost guests, new destinations in Central and Eastern Europe have won. But the big winner is the home market and the travel industry is supporting this trend with more offerings in Brazil itself. Switzerland appeals to a higher income class which is less affected by economic problems. Therefore, we believe that we will still see a slight increase from Brazil in the coming years. Visitors continue to enjoy the icons such as the Jungfrau and the well- known cities. More and more we work with key accounts to bring new products to the market such as the Grand Tour and Grand Tour Train and snow sports offerings. A real snow sports initiative aims to position Switzerland as an alternative to France. In the coming years we expect a very slight growth of Brazilian guests in Switzerland and are expecting around 24, (hotel) overnight stays in 219, which corresponds to a growth of around 4% compared to 215.
