4 P N The prayers that the celebrant offers this Easter Sunday at Mass proclaim that Christ has opened for us the gates of eternal life, because he has conquered death. In the readings today, we hear the testimony of Peter in the Book of Acts, Paul s exhortation to place our hearts on the things of heaven because we have been raised in Christ, and the Gospel narrative that places Mary Magdalene as the first disciple who became aware that the tomb was empty. All of these texts are beautifully summarized in the Easter Sequence that is highly recommended for our choirs and assemblies to sing (or at least recite in two alternating groups) before the proclamation of the Gospel. The resurrection of Christ transformed the way in which Christ s disciples saw themselves and the world before them. It transformed human history, and the lives of many men and women who searched for God, and came to know his unconditional love and mercy through a reversal of the social order: slaves and free people broke bread together in the Eucharist, even calling each other brothers and sisters. Do we consider those who join us at Mass as our own brothers and sisters? Let us remember this question as we consider our own divided society, where we may be separated by academic or economic status, ethnic background, or even our race. We have arrived at the penultimate feast on the Church's calendar, the cause of our joy and our hope. Life has defeated death. Sorrow and suffering do not have the last say. In the resurrection of Jesus we see many reasons to rejoice. Not only has Jesus conquered the specter of visible death, but he restores to us graced life. On Holy Saturday, Jesus descended to the dead and delivered the just souls into heavenly paradise. What are our own Saturday tombs? Jesus has the power to open them all. That is our invitation, this day most of all. May resurrection joy fill your heart, your family, your workplace, and your community. 7 S Las oraciones que el celebrante proclama este domingo de Resurrección destacan que Cristo nos ha abierto las puertas de la vida eterna porque Él es el vencedor de la muerte. Las lecturas de hoy nos ofrecen el testimonio de Pedro en el libro de los Hechos, la exhortación de Pablo a poner el corazón en las cosas del cielo porque Cristo ha resucitado y con Él resucitamos todos y la narración del evangelio de san Juan, por la que María Magdalena es la primera de los discípulos en darse cuenta de que la tumba está vacía. De todos los textos del día, sin embargo, es la hermosa Secuencia, la que resume los sucesos de la resurrección en un estilo poético maravilloso. Ojalá y todas nuestras comunidades la cantaran, o al menos la recitaran a dos coros, antes de la proclamación del Evangelio. De hecho, la resurrección de Cristo transformó la forma en la que los discípulos de Jesús se miraron a sí mismos y miraron al mundo. Este evento no sólo transformó la historia, sino que transformó a los hombres y mujeres que buscaban a Dios y lo encontraban en el testimonio de aquellos que vivían en un estilo de vida no conocido en la sociedad hasta ese momento: los esclavos y los ciudadanos libres compartían por igual de una cena especial (la Eucaristía), por la cual se llamaban hermanos y hermanas. Nos podemos preguntar si en nuestras comunidades de hoy consideramos a aquellos que al menos cada domingo se reúnen junto a nosotros en Misa como nuestros hermanos. Este tema siempre es fuente de reflexión para nuestros fieles, que viven en una sociedad y dentro de una cultura que tiende a clasificar a sus miembros de varias maneras: por su nivel académico o económico, por su raza o por su etnicidad. Por el contrario, la Iglesia de los primeros cristianos, alentados por el Señor Resucitado, se distinguió por sanar estas divisiones y por unir a todos los fieles en un mismo amor, un mismo bautismo, y un mismo Señor. 9 D D P ABRIL 1, 2018 LA SANTA MISA A través de los siglos, desde que el Señor resucitado ascendió a la derecha de Dios Padre hasta nuestros días, la Iglesia ha cumplido el mandato del Señor: "Hagan esto en memoria mía" (Lc 22, 19c). A la celebración de este memorial de la pasión, muerte y resurrección de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, se le ha llamado de muy diversas formas: Fracción del Pan, Cena del Señor, Eucaristía, Cena del Cordero, etc. No sólo se le ha llamado de diferentes formas, sino que también esta celebración ha ido evolucionando con el paso de tiempo. Lo que, en la era apostólica hasta los tres primeros siglos, comenzó como una celebración con oraciones espontáneas, recitadas de memoria, se fue transformando en oraciones y fórmulas escritas, al principio con pequeños libros, y más tarde con libros más completos hasta lo que hoy conocemos como Misal Romano. En la actualidad, el término más popular para designar la celebración que el Señor nos mandó hacer en su memoria, ha pasado a ser más comúnmente usado como Misa. Se cree que esta palabra proviene de la fórmula de despedida de la Misa en latín: Ite missa est, que equivale a "Pueden ir en paz, la Misa ha terminado". Ningún término abarca en su totalidad todo el misterio, desde el lugar en que celebramos la santa Misa. Sin embargo, la Constitución sobre la sagrada Liturgia nos la define como: "sacramento de piedad, signo de la unidad, vínculo de caridad, banquete pascual, en el cual se espera la venida de Cristo, el alma se llena de gracia y se nos da una prenda de la gloria venidera" (n. 47). La Misa y la Liturgia son la fuente y el culmen de toda la actividad cristiana. En esta celebración siempre saciamos nuestra hambre y sed de Dios y encontramos la plenitud de todas nuestras aspiraciones de felicidad y vida eterna. Le Gustaría ser Católico? Este programa de preparación sacramental invita a toda persona mayor de 18 años que desee ser bautizada en la fe católica, o necesite recibir el sacramento de la reconciliación, primera comunión o confirmación. No hay costo alguno y al concluir el programa recibirá el sacramento. También se invita a toda persona con deseos de profundizar su fe católica a asistir.
