It was granted by Vermont March 11, 1780, with an area of 9,328 acres, and chartered May 3, On October 27, 1794, a portion of the town was set off toward forming the town of Brookline. On October 30, 1816, a portion was set off to Grafton. On November 2, 1846, a part of Rockingham and a part of Grafton were annexed to Athens, so that it now contains an area of about 8,336 acres. The surface of the town is uneven, though the elevations are not generally abrupt, and afford a good, well-producing soil, though much better adapted to grazing than tillage. The natural growth of timber is beech, birch, maple, ash, basswood, hemlock and spruce. The only stream of importance is Bull brook, which, with its tributaries, flows a northerly course through the eastern part of the township. One of its tributaries originates in Athens pond, a body of water about thirty acres in extent lying in the western part of the town. The park surrounds 20- acre Emerald Lake, named for the emerald green color of its waters when viewed from above. Restricted to non-motorized watercraft, the lake is ideal for swimming and paddling. The lake offers anglers an opportunity to catch yellow perch, small mouth bass and northern pike. Link: Emerald Woodford State Park 70 minutes This 398-acre park has the highest elevation campground of any park in Vermont, at 2400 feet. There are several lakes & ponds in the surrounding area. 13 Area Information Page 2 Rivers and Lakes Somerset Reservoir Somerset Reservoir is nestled in the southern range of the Green Mountain National Forest. The six and a half mile long reservoir is a man-made lake that was constructed in 1912 to control flows to d o w n s t r e a m h y d r o - e l e c t r i c generation facilities. This water body is the largest wild lake in the state and boasts no dwellings or camps along all 18 miles of its forested shore line. The lake holds many small islands, is fed by numerous cold streams, and supports wetlands and wildlife habitats along most of its shoreline. Harriman Reservoir The Molly Stark Byway follows Harriman Reservoir (also known as Lake Whitingham) for more than a mile. Harriman Reservoir is over 8 miles long and features 28 miles of winding coastline. The shores of this scenic gem remain undeveloped and unbroken; wildlife sightings include the American Bald Eagle and Common Loon. Harriman Reservoir is the largest body of water entirely within Vermont's borders. Lake Shaftsbury Shaftsbury Lake State Park offers shoreline fishing, camping, swimming, and a playground with the purchase of an entrance fee. You can also rent a boat there.
