2 This Year s Signal Hill District FALL CAMPOREE THEME is World War 2 (WWII), which will contain Boy Scout activities related to the world s most devastating war and the generation that fought it. We hope both you and your Scouts will embrace this new theme and this will spark an interest within your Scouts about continuing to research the war s impact on the people that lived through it, our country and our world. I. Sign-Up All Payments and reservations will be done on the Pathway to Adventure website, and must be paid in full upon registration: Participant Registration will be limited to EITHER: o the first 80 youth and adult Scouts, OR o end of day on Friday, September 14 whichever occurs the earliest! Cost: $25 for each Scout & $25 for each adult. Note: Each registration will include 2-night camping fees, one patch, and full admission to WW2 Days! 4 III. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTIONS Camping at Rock Cut State Park Located at 7223 West Lane Road, Loves Park IL. Upon arrival and check-in at the camp, you will be assigned one of the following youth campsites: o Youth Group Camp 005 (up to 20) - Hawk o Youth Group Camp 006 (up to 20) - Hawk o Youth Group Camp 011 (up to 20) - Owl o Youth Group Camp 012 (up to 20) - Owl World War II Days at the Midway Village Located at 6799 Guilford Road, Rockford IL You will be given tickets to World War II Days, which is located at the nearby Midway Village. This event includes elaborate and realistic battles complete with tanks, artillery, armored vehicles, and exiting pyrotechnic displays. It is the largest World War II era reenactment in the United States with over 1,000 uniformed reenactors from 40 states representing soldiers from the United States, Great Britain, France, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Japan, Italy, and Germany along with 70 to 80 vintage tanks, half tracks and other 1940s military vehicles! TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM WW2 DAYS IS NOT PROVIDED. There may be a nominal parking fee per vehicle, which requires your payment. NO MILITARY UNIFORMS CAN BE WORN TO THE WW2 Days EVENT. We suggest that only Class B uniforms are worn to the event in order not to confuse any of the battle participants. Scouts are NOT allowed to bring any WW2 materials to the Midway Village. 4

5 IV. AWARDS PATCH: After the weekend, each registered adult and youth Scout will receive one patch in recognition of attending the WW2 Fall Camporee. No extra patches will be given to any Scouts. Note: The distribution of patches will likely occur at a future Signal Hill Roundtable. V. RULES #1) GENERAL: The Scout Executive or his Designee, the Camp Ranger, and On-duty Campmasters are authorized to enforce these rules and procedures. The Scout Oath and Law will prevail as the code of the camp. All information within the Boy Scouts of America Guide to Safe Scouting and National Standard will be observed. All Scouts should show proper respect and appropriate behavior as an American We should NEVER intentionally use the image of a swastika in any manner nor perform the Hitler salute. As you know, these images were used in World War 2 and continue to represent and remind veterans of the horrible atrocities committed during the holocaust and war. Any disrespectful behavior may result in immediate removal of the individual, patrol, and/or Troop from this event. Note: Absolutely NO military uniform is allowed to be worn by Scouts at the WW2 Days! #2) YOUTH PROTECTION: At least ONE leader within any group must be current in Youth Protection Training. Pathway to Adventure Council enforces the Youth Protection Guidelines identified in the Guide to Safe Scouting. #3) LEADERSHIP: The Pathway to Adventure Council follows the BSA National Policy requiring at least two (2) adult leaders (one must be 21 years or older) on all trips and outings. 5

6 #4) DRUG, ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO USE AND ABUSE: All buildings or facilities under control of the local council are designated as nonsmoking facilities. Smoking outside entrance/exit doors is not permitted at any location. In addition, all Scouting functions, meetings or activities should be conducted on a smoke free basis with permitted smoking areas away from all participants. Smoking in the presence of youth members is strictly prohibited. The Boy Scouts of America prohibits the use of alcoholic beverages and controlled substances at encampments or activities on property owned and/or operated by the Boy Scouts of America, or at any activity involving participation of youth members. Source: Guide to Safe Scouting. #5) FIRES: Fires shall be tended at all times. Ground fires are permitted only in existing fire pits. Liquid fuels may not be used for starting any type of fire. Propane and liquid fuels must be used under direct adult supervision and kept locked when not in use. #6) FIREWOOD: Due to the threat of insect infestation and/or disease the use of outside firewood is prohibited. Downed wood may be gathered as firewood. Cutting live or standing dead trees is prohibited. #7) WATER: Water will be available. #8) VEHICLES: Only Troop trailers and towing vehicles will be allowed to drive to, and remain in the campsites. Please consider bringing a wagon, or similar transport for gear. #9) EMERGENCIES: Units are encouraged to be prepared to respond to minor injury situations with qualified trained leaders and appropriate first aid equipment. If further assistance is necessary, notify the Campmaster Office. 6

7 #10) UNIFORM: The uniform for the Camporee is the Boy Scout Class A for Friday and Sunday. On Saturday, Class B uniform is recommended for WW2 Days event. Note: NO military uniform is allowed to be worn by Scouts!!! #11) COURTESY: Please stay out of other campsites unless invited. Quiet time is observed from 11pm to 7am. Please remain in campsites after 11pm. #12) EARLY CHECKOUT: PLEASE LET US KNOW AT CHECK-IN IF YOU PLAN TO LEAVE BEFORE THE WRAP-UP CEREMONY ON SUNDAY FROM 8:30-9:30am #13) REGULAR CHECK OUT: PLEASE BE SURE THE CAMPSITE IS CLEAN, ALL LITTER AND TRASH HAS BEEN DISPOSED OF PROPERLY. 7

SUPPLY LIST In addition to your typical camping gear, EVERY Scout should also visit their local Scout Store and be sure to pack the following: Class A Uniform (for Friday and Sunday) Class B Uniform (for Saturday) Compass Notepad/Sketch Pad with Pencils Small First Aid Kit While at campsite: Pocket Knife (if currently has a Totin Chip Card) & Valid Totin Chip Card VII. ADULT LEADERS & VOLUNTEERS All transportation and all meals are the sole responsibility of each individual Troop. Adult supervision must be provided by your Troop and is recommended to be available to your members at all times. Your Troop Leadership is solely responsible for the proper behavior and activities performed by your Scouts. By attending, all Adult Leaders are agreeing to follow all BSA policies, including the buddy system and following the Youth Protection training procedures. 8

9 VIII. WW2 Facts World War 2 was a battle between two groups of countries the Allies and the Axis. The major Allied Powers were Britain, France, Russia, China and the United States. The major Axis Powers were Germany, Italy and Japan. Before World War 2 began, Germany was ruled by a man named Adolf Hitler. Together with the Nazi Party, he wanted Germany to rule Europe. To gain more land and power, on September 1, 1939 German troops invaded Poland. After Hitler refused to stop the invasion, Britain and France declared war on Germany World War II had begun. During the course of the war, German forces advanced through Europe. By the summer of 1941 they had invaded France, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg, Denmark, Norway, Greece, Yugoslavia* and the USSR*. Millions of Germans were imprisoned and killed because they didn t fit the image of the perfect German. Hitler wanted to create what he thought was the best and strongest race and to the Nazi Party, this excluded certain groups, such as Jews, Gypsies and those with physical and mental disabilities. In an attempt to eliminate a racial enemy outside of Germany, such groups were also persecuted in the countries invaded by German forces. The group most heavily targeted by the Nazis were the Jews. Around six million Jewish people were killed during World War 2 in one of history s most terrible events the Holocaust. Racist in his views, Hitler blamed Jewish people for Germany losing World War I and claimed they were dangerous to German people and society. Around the same time that Germany fought for power in Europe, Japan wanted to control Asia and the Pacific. In 1937 (before World War 2 had officially begun) under Emperor Hirohito, Japan attacked China, bringing the two nations into years of conflict. The US didn t join the war until 1941, when Japan attacked the United States at their Naval Base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. On December 8, 1941 (the very next day), the US declared War on Japan and, in turn, its German allies. Some countries remained neutral in World War 2. Such countries were Spain, Sweden and Switzerland who chose not to join either side. In 1944, an Allied army crossed from Britain to free France from Nazi rule. One year later, Allied armies invaded Germany, forcing the Germans to surrender. The Germans surrendered on May 8, After nuclear attacks on Japan s major cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan also surrendered to Allied forces in August the same year. World War 2 had ended. Around 64 million people died in World War 2 that s more than the entire population of the United Kingdom. 9
