Miccosukee Camp-O-Ree Guide October 27 29, 2017 Camp Soule, Clearwater Let the Games Begin! Welcome to the 2017 Miccosukee Camp O Ree. This Leader s Guide contains pertinent information required for planning by units to ensure a successful event. This year your Miccosukee Camp O Ree staff have planned a Camp O Ree filled with some traditional Highland games and some new events designed for fun and fitness. Registration: The Camp O Ree activities are Unit and Patrol based. Troops/Crews must divide Scouts into 6-8 per patrol, up to 3 patrols. Patrols can be different from the Scouts regular Unit patrols. One Unit/Crew Catapult Entry regardless of the size of the Unit/Crew is allowed. Participating Units/Crews must register as a unit contingent, not as individuals. Register online at A copy of the attached Unit Roster must be turned in when checking into camp. Participant fee is $12.00 per Scout/Adult Leader/Staff Member. Participant s fees include Camp fees, program fees and Commemorative patch. Registration and payment deadline is October 23th. A late registration fee of $20.00 will be accepted up to the day of camp. Adult Leadership: Each Unit must have at least two registered and Youth Protected Leaders in attendance. UNIFORMING: All participants who are current members of the Boy Scouts of America will wear the Official BSA field uniform (Class A) to the Camporee. Please wear the activity field uniform (commonly referred to as Class B) during the day. Class A Uniforms will be worn for the campfire ceremony (kilts permitted), and Sunday services. ***Wearing of Clan Tartans: What is a Clan? A family, what are Troops? A Scout Family. Some Clans as well as Troops express their unity by possession of common emblems or symbolic colors (Class B s for instance). At our Highland Games, we encourage your Clan/Troop to wear Tartans, whether they are kilts, armbands, t-shirts, Scottish Hats etc.

MEDICAL FORMS: All Scouts and leaders attending, whether camping or as a day visitor must have a current Annual Health and Medical Form parts A&C. Troop leadership is responsible for holding these forms during the Camporee. Troop Leadership shall address any limitations, medications, allergies or other medical issues relevant with the Scouts of their Troop. Please speak with Camp Leadership directly if there are any issues they need to be aware of. VEHICLES AND TRAILERS: To protect our camp and our Scouts, only unit equipment trailers will be allowed to be parked at campsites. Trailers must be unhitched from the pulling vehicle and the pulling vehicle must be returned to the camp parking lot. All Vehicles must be parked in the camp parking lot and are not allowed into camp. CHECK IN: The Troop s SPL (Senior Patrol Leader)/Crew or acting SPL and ONE adult leader per unit is to check in at the Health Lodge. Units must provide a troop rooster AND the cell phone number of at least one adult leader in charge. Units will be given their campsite assignment, map, and schedule for the weekend upon check in. MENU PLANNING: Units are responsible for all their meals. We highly recommend that meals be simple, and easy to prepare and clean up. This is a great opportunity for scouts to work on their Cooking Merit Badge. GROUND FIRES: Campsite fires will not be permitted for cooking or recreation. Please plan accordingly for meal preparation. There will be a Saturday evening campfire at the Council Ring. Sanitation, Drinking Water, Trash Disposal and Gray Water Disposal: These will be conducted under BSA standards as outlined in the Scout Handbook, Leave No Trace front country guidelines and other appropriate literature. Trash disposal is behind the mess hall. Please consult with camp leadership for nearest facilities if you are unaware of Camp Soule. RESPECT AND BEHAVIOR: Please respect the privacy of your neighboring units. Since you have other Scout units near your campsite, please keep the noise level down. Scouts and leaders are to behave as Scouts. The possession of or use of drugs, alcoholic beverages (including NA Beer), firearms, or fireworks is STRICTLY PROHIBITED and is not permitted in camp. Nighttime activities are at the Scoutmaster/SPL s discretion.

CHECK OUT: All Units must check out with camp leadership prior to departure on Sunday. Check out will not be permitted prior to closing ceremonies, unless extenuating circumstances apply. Camp leadership will inspect the campsite. Patches will be issued for the Camporee, one per participant. Patches will be distributed upon unit departure. EVENT INFORMATION: Program Schedules-will be provided at check in to the SPL at the Mandatory SPL/Leaders Meeting. Friday 5:30 9:00 PM Arrival, check in, set up 9:00 PM Mandatory SPL/ Scoutmaster Meeting *schedules will be distributed Saturday Reveille Breakfast/clean up at campsite Opening Program rotation Lunch at campsite Program rotation Final Raft Race preparation and race Dinner at campsite Camp Fire Sunday Breakfast Vespers and closing Final departure

PROGRAM GUIDE Our Highland games will combine traditional Celtic sports that originated centuries ago in the Scotland Highlands with a few Scouting twists (mostly for safety). Scouts will compete in fun and challenging Celtic tests of strength, endurance and skill. The Highland Games is both an individual and a team event for clans of 4-8 Scouts (Patrol/Troop). There will be two weight classes for all the events except the catapult. Heavy Weights (scout weight over 115lbs)) and Light Weight (scout weights under 115 lbs). AT THE MANDTORY SPL/LEADERS meeting Friday evening, we will distribute wrist ID for the two weight classes. A MANDATORY Rooster of each class per Troop will be required. Weight should be based on latest medical form. A scale will be on hand if needed. We reserve the right to challenge a weight class participant but we trust that everyone will be truthful. An optional adult class has been added for leaders to participate as Heavy Weights. There will be Toss events that go for height and Throw events that go for distance. There will also be Timed events. RULES: Catapult/Trebuchet Rules and Suggestions: CONSTRUCTION IS TO BE COMPLETED BY ALL THE BOYS IN THE TROOP. NO ADULT ASSISTANCE IS PERMITTED IN THE CONSTRUCTION AREA. THE EVENT SUPERVISORS WILL ENSURE THE RULES ARE FOLLOWED AND THAT ALL SAFETY RULES ARE ENFORCED. THE GUIDE TO SAFE SCOUTING MUST BE FOLLOWED AT ALL TIMES. TREBUCHETS ARE ALSO ALLOWED AND WILL COMPETE WITH THE SAME POINT SYSTEM. We suggest you build your catapult at your troop location and test it prior to bringing it to the Camporee. As in medieval times it must be taken apart and rebuilt at the Soul Battlefield, during the Troop s program rotation period. THE CAMPOREE STAFF WILL PROVIDE THE PUMPKIN, WHICH THE CATAPULT WILL THROW.

DISTANCE, TEAMWORK, CREATIVITY OF THE CATAPULT, WILL ALL BE PART OF THE OVERALL POINT SYSTEM. REMEMBER ADULTS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED INTO THE CONSTRUCTION AREA EXCEPT IN EMERGENCIES. Point system: 1. Total 100 points 2. Teamwork by all Scouts in Troop: 30 points 3. Construction concept: 20 points 4. Safety demonstrated during construction: 30 Points 5. Distance of pumpkin to target area: 20 points 6. Camp staff will be providing the pumpkins which will be on average 5 to 10 pounds Suggestions on how to build your catapult: BE ADVISED, THESE ARE ONLY IDEAS ON HOW TO BUILD A CATAPULT, WE MAKE NO CLAIMS TO THEIR ABILITY. YOUR DESIGN IS UP TO YOU. KEEP IN MIND SAFETY IS PARAMONT!!!
