Please verify the meeting by either going to the chapter web site and the Events page, or call The next general meeting is scheduled for September 6th, 7:00 pm, at the Littlerock Fire Department (West Thurston Regional Fire Authority, Station #1-2), Littlerock Road SW, Olympia, WA (Just north of 110th Avenue 0.2 miles.) From your President - The summer is flying by. It seems it just began and now it is almost September. I ve been able to ride with friends at area 20,23 and Kennedy Creek a lot this year. Thanks to all the hard working people who work to keep these local trails open. I hope that those of you who are able to camp with your horses have had a great summer too. Thanks to the hard work of Nisqually BCH we now have an open area 23 and the army is now making the parking area good enough to use over the fall and winter. I encourage our members to take saws and clippers each time you ride to help maintain and improve all the trails at JBLM and elsewhere. If each of us does a little each time it will add up to a lot. Thanks to the group ( Peggy, Jen, Chris, Deb and Sue Koch) who made it out for working on the Campground Trail from our club. It sounds like it is in good shape now. There are some good clinics coming in the area with Mark Rashid in October and as always Buck Branneman in November. Probably lots of other good clinicians to learn from as well. June & August meeting minutes - The discussion we had at the August meeting is enclosed but please note that as we had only five members present we were unable to vote on anything including approving meeting minutes. Please see the July 2016 newsletter for the meeting minutes for our meeting in June and come prepared to approve them or not.. Legislative - Have you sent your comments in regarding the Enchanted Valley Chalet? BCHW hopes you have as the deadline is August 31st. Lightning - In the last issue I talked a bit about thunder storm and lightning safety. Recent news out of Norway is that 323 reindeer, all wild, were killed in a single incident. Cabela s - No takers for this past weekend s event at Cabela s. We still have September and perhaps with the weather cooling off we ll see some involvement by other BCHW chapters. Stay tuned. You may be asked to come on out for a few hours. That will be September 10 & 11. I continue my plea for your biographies and articles. Articles trickle in from only a few of you and they are always appreciated. This months newsletter article has no photos with it unfortunately even though some were taken. I do like getting photographs as well by the way. (due to the tardiness of my getting this newsletter out, photos arrived so I have included them.) I cannot simply go out on the Internet and regurgitate articles or grab photographs. The chapter got stung once already for copyright violation and I don t want to go there again (a cartoon off Facebook). So if you don t send me anything for the newsletter there simply is going to be a short one. I can t write it all myself. You might ask why I don t get permission to reprint. It takes time and effort to do that. If someone wants to do that for the chapter it would be appreciated. But we need to have an idea as to what we want to publish. And come time to put the newsletter together I really have no idea as to overall content except for meeting minutes, presidents message and news from our director if anything. This summer so far as wildfires has so far proven to be an improvement over the last two summers. Granted we have had them and will for a while longer. Did you know that the DNR sent out a press release recently saying that out of the 84 fires to date, 80 were human caused! 1

Capitol Riders of BCHW General Meeting Littlerock Firehall, Littlerock Road SW, Olympia, WA August 2, 2016 President Laura Shillam called the meeting to order at 7:03 pm. Introductions made with five members and two guests present. No quorum present so unable to approve June meeting minutes. Treasurer not present - no report. Newsletter - Chris Enrico Chris told the group he continues to ask for biographies and articles. Web site - Chris Enrico Chris said there is nothing new with the chapter web site. Legislative - Chris Enrico Chris talked about senate bill Mountain Bikes in Wilderness. BCHW opposes this bill. Director - Karen Johnson Chris has recieved nothing from Karen for this meeting. Work Parties - Peggy Tucker Peggy told the group that the Campground Trail has needs. Peggy told the group after some discussion of dates that we will have a work party on Wednesday August 10th, 10 am at Mima. No animals but bring nippers and weed trimmers. Chris will the chapter regarding this work party. A discussion of lightweight weed trimmers ensued. Laura will investigate prices. Hoofprints - Peggy Tucker Peggy explained the hoofprints program for our guests. Volunteer Hours - Deb Hall Deb told the group that the BCHA newspaper had a national summary. 34,344 hours nationally with a dollar value of $11,238,376. $2,425,738 was BCHWs share. Club Rides - Lori Ewing Lori said that no one went to Elbe on June 18th and that no one attended the prize ride at Kalama on July 23rd. Lori said that she and Deb Hall did go to Kalama Horse Camp on July 28th through the 31st. 2

Washington Trail Book By Kim McCarrel From Olympia to the Oregon Border From the Coast to the East Slope of the Cascades Over 100 Trails 20 Horse Camps Over 1,000 Miles of Trails Regarding the scheduled day ride on August 7th out of Margaret McKenny, the Appaloosa club has a ride that day as well. Lori told the group that she will be camping at Clackamas Horse Camp in Oregon August 11th to the 14th. Reservations are needed. Lori also told the group that she, Tim and April Bryan are headed to Quinn Meadow August 21st through 24th. It was mentioned (Laura perhaps) that JBLM Training Area 20 is usually closed on Sundays such that we should switch that ride from August 28th to the 27th. Chris will send out an . Chris was asked to resend the about Capitol Forest trail maintenance. Treats for September meeting - Peggy Tucker volunteered. Laura adjourned the meeting at 7:57. Respectfully submitted. Chris Enrico, Secretary Capitol Riders Chapter BCHW for 2016 Kalama Horse Camp - by Deb Hall This year s Capitol Riders camp out was sparsely but enthusiastically attended. My husband, Ron and our puppy Charlie accompanied me and Chip. Lori Ewing brought her friend Laurie from New Mexico, four amazingly well behaved Australian shepherds and two lovely appaloosa mares. All our horses were Appaloosas. We all arrived on Friday. For those who haven t been there, this is a campground in Southwest Washington that is a relatively easy drive with good paved roads all the way. The campground roads are also paved. There are corrals, stock water, toilets, and picnic tables. The campground has very good sites. The trails are varied. We went on a two hour ride Friday afternoon. It was warm but all of our riding was in the shade. The horse flies were aggressive in some spots but not in the campground. There is a short loop that follows the Kalama River through a beautiful forest. The river roars in this area. The footing is rocky in places and soft volcanic ash in places. Lori and I rode the Blue Lake Loop on Saturday. We followed the directions in Kim McCarrel s book. Lori would ride along looking at the book for the turns, looking like a tourist on a city street! This loop took about 5 hours. We saw the most amazing variety of terrain, from old growth forest to volcanic blow out. The side trip to Blue Lake was well worth it. The lake is a beautiful blue green color with a lovely creek flowing out of it in which we were able to water our horses. The footing on the loop varied from very rocky to soft dirt. There was moderate elevation change but not especially difficult. It was described by Kim McCarrel as moderate. Lori and I decided to do potlucks both Friday and Saturday, so there was lots of good food. Ron and our puppy had some nice hiking and did part of the Cinnamon Trail. When we were eating on Saturday evening we heard the brush crashing and Chip appeared at our dinner table. He was clearly feeling left out when we went next door to Lori and Laurie s picnic table. He had managed to wriggle out under the chain on the corral. We decided to let him room in an empty corral at Lori s site for that night. We did a short ride Sunday morning; then packed up for home. The Kalama Horse Camp is an excellent place to try 3

4 4 out horse camping. There are some more challenging loops that we didn t try. Maybe next year!
