To educate, encourage and solicit active participation in the wise use of the back country resource by horsemen and the general public Commensurate with our heritage. 5. Capitol Riders Chapter, BCHW (with a link to our Facebook page) Meet monthly at the Littlerock firehall, Littlerock Road SW (larger of the two meeting rooms). Please verify the meeting by either going to the chapter web site and the Events page, or call The chapter Christmas Party will be in it s usual location, Rob Keyser s barn in Littlerock on La France Road. We will once again join Oakland Bay chapter and the start time is 6:00 pm on Saturday December 10th. The Appaloosa club was invited but declined. Bring food for a potluck item (the Hartmans will be bringing ham once again so perhaps plan around that.) We will also have a gift exchange so something in the range of $15 to $20 is appropriate. Dress warm. Bring a folding chair if you have one as we ll not have enough seating given the numbers attending. Also bring your own drinks if you wish. Soda s and juice are typically provided although no one has yet put themselves down to bring any. (see the list onn the last page) We will also have some small tables for eating. Chapter Officer Elections! President - Laura Shillam, Vice-President - Sue Davis, Treasurer - Dean/Susan Hartman, Secretary - Chris Enrico and Alternate Director - Deb Hall. Please continue to record any volunteer hours and get them to Deb Hall on a consistent basis. A reminder that November 30 was the last day to ride all the trails in Capitol Forest for the winter months until May 1st of next year. That being said, how many of you are familiar with the E9400 road? It crosses the Campground Trail just north of where the Mima Falls Trail turns off and heads west and the Campground Trail begins. This overgrown road is a valid route to the E9000 Road which allows you to make a larger loop up to and including the Equine Loop Trail. Before you reach the Equine Loop Trail you ll intersect the Campground Trail and can turn around there if you wish. The E9000 Road is rocky so boots are recommended for unshod animals. (a map is inside this newsletter) DNR has also opened up the section of Mima Falls Trail from where the Campground Trail begins and the E9000 Road. Two tenths of a mile to the road. Plus even more trail is open this winter. Follow the E9000 road to it s end where the Campground Trail ends and meets the Mima Tie and McKenny trails. Come off the road onto a short section of the Mima Tie heading north and continue on to the McKenny Trail. When you reach the D6340 Road, turn right and head back towards the Equine Loop Trail. I continue my plea for your biographies and articles. Articles trickle in from only a few of you and they are always appreciated. Please include photos. For those who have not yet renewed we will have your membership application at the party for you to sign. Yes, all you need to do is sign and date it, and hand over some money in the form of a check or cash. Calendars - I have about 25 or 30 left at this time. Some of you need to take a few and either give them as Christmas gifts (they do make good ones) or sell them. A few members have already taken some. Take some and help support BCHW! We (the chapter) make no profit. BCHW makes about $3 per calendar. All members should purchase one. Not counting couples that would be 36 calendars! Capitol Riders of BCHW General Meeting Littlerock Firehall, Littlerock Road SW, Olympia, WA November 1, 2016 President Laura Shillam called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm. Meeting agenda approved. No guests and some members present (arriving back home that evening I dropped pretty much everything at my door and when I looked for the sign-in sheet could not find it. I have some numbness and weakness in part of my right hand and I 1

October meeting minutes approved. Treasurer - Dean Hartman. Dean told the group that the chapter has $xxx in the checking account. Dean has to do the books for the end of the year at the end of November. He is waiting for the Kennedy Creek ride split from Oakland Bay chapter. Newsletter - Chris Enrico Chris said that he needs biographies and articles. Web Site - Chris Enrico Chris said there is nothing new. Legislative - Chris Enrico Nothing that wasn t ed. Director Report - Karen Johnson It s been pretty quiet on the western front here. Other than asking folks to sign the letter of support for the WWRP funding request so BCHW and others can obtain some of the funding for projects. WWRP is very important to us. [one letter of support you can write right now is for Bruce Tropple/Indian Camp improvements in the Middle Fork Teanaway] see below (due date today) FYI: I am suffering from a damaged nerve in my back. I was knocked down onto gravel by one of my horses running by me. I have had severe pain and numbness in my left leg so I m on crutches to get around. I had Xrays of my back which showed nothing broken but am told a CT scan or MRI may be the next step. No riding for me for awhile!! I m writing you all to ask for your letters of support for a NOVA non-motorized grant proposal to renovate and expand Indian Camp Campground within the Teanaway Community Forest. We are working with our agency landscape architect to add about 20 more campsites, most will be for horse camping and will add highlines, hitching posts, an ADA ramp for horsemen, more vault toilets and possibly a picnic shelter. This expansion would develop the field to the south/east of the current horse camp which is currently used as overflow and some space on the far side of the Teanaway Butte Road, totaling about 5 acres (on the north side of the Middle Fork Road, away from the river). In addition to the development of new campsites, we will be renovating the existing 13 sites with new approved fire rings, picnic tables, pathways and another kiosk with updated signage. We are still working on the dollar amount for this grant, but will be providing opportunities for volunteers to help us with project implementation, if funded, which can be used toward our sponsor match (donated labor). We look forward to the opportunity to make these improvements for you all to enjoy and to accommodate the horsemen more comfortably and sustainably. If you would like to help support this grant proposal, please send me a letter of support referencing the grant name and number (Indian Camp Campground Renovation & Expansion ) by November 1, 2016 by or to 713 Bowers Road, Ellensburg, WA If you have any questions, feel free to send them my way. I will be out of the office beginning 10/12/16 and will return 10/24/16 to answer any questions you may have during that time. Laura also said that Karen had asked her to let folks know about the Arab Horse Association clinic on January 7th at the Tacoma Dome. (Chris has sent out a notice via ) Work Parties - Peggy Tucker not present Hoof Prints - Peggy Tucker not present Volunteer Hours - Deb Hall not preent Club rides - Lori Ewing Lori told the group that as she will not be scheduling rides for next year, members should share lists of rides THEY want to go on. 2

There is an equine first aid clinic on November 2nd at the Tumwater Fire Station. 7:30 to 9:00. $10. Chris will . Laura told the group that since we want to spice up meetings what about bringing in equipment to show off, so she did. Laura had some Scoot boots and a slicker that folks looked at and asked questions about. The suggestion was made that members introduce themselves at meeting when guests are present. Lori Ewing and April Bryan went on the Wine ride. Wine ride photos are on the BCHW web site. Capitol Forest - open trail segments to winter riding! Can DNR open the trail segment just past the Campground Trail turnoff to the E9400 Proad to the E9000 Road? Treats for January meeting - forgot to ask. Laura adjourned the meeting at 8:05 pm. Respectfully submitted. Chris Enrico, Secretary Capitol Riders Chapter BCHW for 2016 I apologize for the lateness of this newsletter as well. Finding it hard to get up early but when I do get up I must hang out while my back adjusts to the new norm after being in bed. See the two advertisements on this page? They have both paid Capitol Riders a fee. Please do some business with them. Buy some guide books -very informative ones by the way. Get your equine s poo tested for fecal egg counts, or any of the other services shown. Laura will come pick up samples if there is a large enough number of them. (ten?) 3

Over the past few years, in both WA and AZ, they have been a part of several horse riding clubs. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. He is gone but his legacy lives on. 6 Cinderella and the Rubber Slipper Or aka Romeo and the Easy Boot Glove by Mickie Hattrup This fairy tale took place on a beautiful sunny November 6th. It didn't matter that an inch of rain had fallen the day before. 23 was open!!! The sun was shining and we, Laura Schillam, (member) Kerri Stoehr, and Connie Fleming, and I (member) were starved for a trail ride. We were not alone. Other trailers were neatly lined up in a row. We visited with a few people before we started on our quest to seek out Chardonnay Trail (but that's another tale on how that was named). We started out on Mushy Trail. (The original trail along Rainer Road). We held our collective breaths as parts of the trail were pretty slippery or boggy, but our steeds were steadfast. When we finally reached the end of that trail, Romeo had lost one of his boots! Connie (a true blue friend, offered to walk back a ways to look for it.) no way was I going to ask her to do that. I figured I'd post it on our Facebook page and maybe someone would find it and know that it was mine. So we continued on to Chardonnay Trail. Only we came upon a mighty fortress with patrolling knights and surrounded with razor wire! (A lot of soldiers, tanks, and tents) blocking our way. Well, we got the hint and rode the pipeline for the rest of our ride. We had an uneventful return trip catching another trail back to the trail head. As we got to the trailers, low and behold!! A knight, but not in shining armor (Frank) and his fair maiden, Sandy, (who made him get down off his steed to retrieve the boot) appeared with Cinderfella's slipper! It was pretty muddy, but I really didn't care! A huge THANK YOU to all of the knights and fantastic ladies who were instrumental in opening up 23 for all of us! L to R, Sandy, Frank, Connie, Laura, and Kerri Picture taken by Mickie There is plenty of room for parking. Please leave enough space so horses can be tied on both sides of the trailer >> 6

17 Capitol Forest Winter Riding (December 1st to April 30th) Lines on the maps: Black lines are roads Red lines are trails closed to winter riding Yellow, green, purple lines are trails open for winter riding Access to northerly McKenny Trail section: Coming from the Equine Loop Trail, ride the E9500 road southwest to the E9000 Road and follow it northwest to the end. Coming from the Mima Falls Trail, follow the E9000 Road to the end. At the intersection of the end of the E9000 Road next to the Mima Falls Tie Trail and the Campground Trail, you continue on and ride over the big culvert to the intersection of McKenny Trail where the Campground Trail ends. At that point, you continue straight as if you're riding towards Capitol Peak (do not turn right on the Mckenny Trail which will continue to be closed). The section of McKenny Trail up to the D4630 road will be open to equines during the winter months. From there on we must only ride on logging roads, so don't cross the road and pick up the McKenny Trail on the other side of the road. In order to make a loop back to Margaret McKenny Campground or the Equine Loop Trail, turn right on the D4630 road and follow it down to the short bridge on the McKenny Trail. Access to the E9000 Road: Turn off the Campground Trail on to the E9400 Road and turn right (north) on the E9000 Road. Turn west on to the Mima Falls Trail for 0.2 mile where it crosses the E9000 Road. Turn right (north) and continue on the E9000 Road. Boots recommended for riding on the roads! Using your web browser, go to &z=14&t=t4&q= This is an online map where if you click on trails and roads, it will tell you which they are. You can also change basemaps, zoom in and out and much more.
