1 DEDICATED TO PROMOTING RIDING IN THE CUYAHOGA VALLEY NATIONAL PARK MAY 2018 MEDINA COUNTY CHAPTER OHIO HORSEMAN S COUNCIL MEETINGS 1 ST Wednesday of the Month 6:30 Social time - 7:00 pm Meeting At the Boston Store - Upstairs 1550 Boston Mills Road Cuyahoga Valley National Park CO-PRESIDENTS Dianna Weaver diannaw@ameritech.net NEWSLETTER Dianna Weaver s Co-President s Report Have you been reading our MOHC articles in the Medina County section of the Corral Magazine lately? They have been fantastic. Rosemary Young is our club s author and she has been doing an outstanding job. I originally planned on writing about our May 2 nd meeting but Rosemary beat me to it. She has written a fantastic article for the Corral summarizing our meeting and highlighting our wonderful guest speaker, Janet Fox. Please take a few moments of your time to enjoy Rosemary s piece. Mike Andrea Mlandrea03@yahoo.com VICE PRESIDENT Molly Eastwood mollyeastwood@aol.com TREASUREr Rosemary Young rosemary4ohc@gmail.com SECRETARY Kathy Schmidt km5707@aol.com TRAIL COMMITTEE Mike Andrea Contact: see above Patricia Vance pavancelaw@aol.com Jack Weese Jack4ohc@att.net H: C: Dianna Weaver Contact: see above Rosemary is one of our most involved members as not only does she write for the Corral, she has been our Treasurer, for many years and is a frequent volunteer at our work parties. I am so glad she is great with numbers as she makes managing our finances a breeze. Additionally, she also is our Membership and Merchandise chair providing you all with access to our stylish and trail-worthy OHC apparel. If you need to enhance you summer riding ensemble please reach out to Rosemary so she can outfit you in our latest fashions. As a volunteer at our work trail maintenance parties, blowing leaves, snipping back runaway bushes, digging out the swales and ravines I think she could write her own book on best practices. Every year Rosemary helps out on our State rides and she is a great organizer! Rosemary is always there for us stepping up to whatever help the club needs. Thank you so much Rosemary we truly appreciate your efforts!!! For many years Louise Harting and Hugh Freeman have been the organizers and chefs for our State Ride meals. I would like to thank them for all their hard work and dedicated services over the years. The effort they have put into planning and cooking those meals resulted in a delicious treat for our attendees. Unfortunately, as they say, all good things must come to an end and this year Louise and Hugh have decided to hang up their aprons. Thank you, Louise and Hugh, for the wonderful meals over the years!!!
2 With their retirement we now need a volunteer to serve as our Organizer/Chef for the State Ride meals. We provide a hotdog dinner on Friday, a pig roast with all the fixings Saturday evening and Sunday morning breakfast. Please note that Tim Stein has made the plans for the pig roast, so that means our new volunteer is already 33% done! This job can easily be done by one person or a group volunteers and we can even split up the job in case someone/group wants to choose to do just one of the meals. Please give this some serious thought. We will need to make decisions very soon. Also rest assured Louise and Hugh will be there in the end to provide guidance and advice. Finally, I want to ask everyone to consider joining us for National Trails Day, Saturday June 2 nd from 9:00a.m.-1:00p.m.! This is personally my favorite volunteer day at the park. Around 200 people get together and work on major projects that CVNP has set up. It s so nice to see so many people from different ages and backgrounds working together for the good of the park. This year we will be working on Wetmore trail and afterwards the Conservancy of Cuyahoga National Park provides lunch for the volunteers. Weather permits, we will be camping that weekend at Robinson Field so if you can make it out I d love to see you there. Please register online at l-maintenance.htm. Happy Trails! Dianna Stay connected between newsletters by joining our Facebook Group: JOINT SUMMIT/MEDINA OHC DAY TRAIL RIDES 2018 Since the day rides for Cuyahoga. More info in this newsletter Jack s Stall 5/2018 I trust that many of you are happy that we are having some civil riding weather. Prize is saying that it is about time and that he is ready to go camping, So am I. On the 5 th of May Linda and I along with Lou Slavic helped shuttle trailers at Cuyahoga s day ride from Wallace Lake to the Edgerton Corral. We enjoyed visiting with him as we went back and forth between Edgerton and Wallace Lake. The weather was perfect and they had a nice turn out. Everyone was happy. The upcoming Summit/Medina day rides look to be a lot of fun with a variety of different trails to ride. Prize promises that he will slow up his walk just a little bit. Dianna, MOHC Co-President, has been working with Prize both on the ground and under saddle. Sarah Gardner, one of the ladies who boards at the same barn has also been working with him. Both have been such a big help. Prize is becoming suitable for little old ladies to ride to the Saturday evening ice cream social. Speaking of ice cream, socials, the June MOHC general meeting will be ice cream social night. Karen Knuth is in charge of the ice cream. What would we do without Rosemary Young? Please get your reservations for the State Ride/Pig Roast in to her as soon as possible. The sooner we know who is coming the better we can make plans for the event. At the May general meeting author and long time MOHC member Janet Fox was the featured speaker. She talked about her series of desperate books. Linda has read the first two books and will soon be starting on the third one. Jim Wallace, NE Regional Rep. was at the May meeting. He filled us in on some of the things that are happening within OHC. Jim is running for State Vice President for We wish him good luck. Jim will be stepping down from the Regional Rep. position. If you are interested in being the new NE regional rep. please let Jim know. Thought of the month: No matter how badly behaved you are, your horse always gives you a second chance. As always, may your equine be with you as you traverse the trails of life. Jack Weese
4 WHERE IS IT? The answer can be found in this newsletter. State Ride is coming!!!! As you all know our state ride will be here before you know it and we need your help! It takes a lot of volunteers to make this ride a success and for the days of August we will need all the helping hands we can get. Here are some ways you can help: Set-up on August 16 in the evening or August 17 morning Set-up of auction items on August 17- morning Food service August 17 (hot dog dinner), 18 (pig roast) or 19 (breakfast) Club store Registration sign-in Helping get people to their assigned camp site Tear-down on August 19 Lots of other things I m probably forgetting We also need lots of auction items. The silent auction will be held on the afternoon of Saturday August 18 and we need donations- we take nearly anything! It can be new, unused, gently used or old and still useful or pretty. It does not have to be horse-related. I ve been asking my friends for items for years and they are always glad to give me things they don t use or never used or those great deals they got on Home Shopping Network that they had no idea what to do with once they got them. Folks love used tack, blankets, bits, saddles, leads, etc. Wondering what to do with all that jewelry you got from QVC? Donate it to our auction! If you own a business consider donating a gift card or gift basket of products. It s a great way to promote your business. For donations or to help with the ride, see me at one of our meetings, or contact me at rosemary4medinaohc@gmail.com or Thanks for helping! Rosemary Young

16 Answer to where is it: This photo was taken from the turnpike. It is on the Valley Trail where the trail comes out of the woods and goes through the old construction staging area. It leads down to the turnpike maintenance road that we take to get to Boston Store. The kids love to interact with the truckers on the turnpike by getting them to blow their horns.
