1 OKANOGAN COUNTY BACKCOUNTRY HORSEMAN OF WASHINGTON NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2010 From the President s Chair By Dave Swanberg August proved to be a very difficult month as far as our work parties and trail rides were concerned. We canceled a major work party at Hangman Flat because it was reported that there were numerous trees across the trail. And it was no longer passable for stock. We also canceled 2 trail rides so in the future, if there is a ride or a work party scheduled in our event calendar, please call me or another board member to verify that the event will take place I am hoping that we will have better luck in Sept, as we have the Honeymoon Pass trail ride, the Ladies Whistler Canyon ride ( possibly a campout ) and the Chiliwist ride still on the schedule for Sept. Be sure to read further in the newsletter for details. The 3rd Qtr. BCHW BOD meeting will be held on Sept 25th and the 2011 BCHW Calendars will be available for purchase at that time. If you are interested in a calendar, please fill out the enclosed order form and send to Trygve Culp. The cost is $10.00 for each calendar. Calendars can also be ordered later, but by placing your order now, we can save on shipping and handling expense. Note: We have at least one photo in the 2011 calendar. With year end getting close at hand, it is time to think about the 2011 elections of Chapter officers. All elected positions are open for election this year. They are President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Trail Boss, and Director. If you are interested in serving in one of these positions, please let Gail Sunde or myself know of your interest. If you would like more information on the position requirements, please give me a call and I will send you a job description. That s all for now, Happy Trails, Dave

2 LADIES RIDE UPPER WHISTLER CANYON SEPTEMBER 8 (OR SEPT 8 & 9) It has been a little difficult to keep this plan in hand, but it is ON for a Ladies Ride at Wilcox Trailhead, Upper Whistler Canyon. We will ride out to the look-out,, have some lunch and then return. That is what is scheduled, but some people have indicated they would like to camp and ride two days so if there is interest, I will camp there on 9-8 and we can ride both days. This is an RSVP event whether you camp or not so please let me know if you are going to go on the ride and if you do or do not want to camp. Call me at or at davenpeg@gdimail.net. All other guidelines apply, arrive at 9:A.M. ready to ride at 10:00 A.M. Sorry Guys, this is LADIES ONLY. CHILIWIST RIDE Saturday, September 25 The ride is planned to start at 10:00. We will meet at Stan and Cathy Kvistad s,615 Chiliwist Rd. The ride is planned for at least 4 hours. Chile Feed after the ride will be provided. Guest s may bring Desserts, Salads or any thing they choose to compliment the Chili Feed. We will have a variety of Cold drinks and utensils on hand. Plenty of parking and turn-around space. Signs will be in place for directions. Hosts for the ride are Stan and Cathy Kvistad and Nora and Elmer Rappe. They welcome you back to the Chiliwist Valley. 3 From Linda and Frank Oborne Honey Moon Pass ride Saturday Sept 4th This ride will leave the lower Salmon meadows (at the corral) 10:00 sharp. We suggest that you get there a bit early so you don't have to rush, this ride will be approx. 6 hours long. Bring your lunch or snacks, we will plan on eating at the top of the Honeymoon pass, then ride up to middle Tiffany mountain so you all can see the view. The trail is rocky in places, and there are some small boggy areas, several small stream crossing as well as bridges. I would rate the trail as 2-3 classification. Our ride starts at 4500 ft Salmon meadows, To Honeymoon pass at 7300 ft. This is beautiful ride and you'll really enjoy the scenery and the day. DIRECTIONS: from Conconully, go straight through town( 2 stop signs), approx. 9 miles to Salmon meadows. Here at the meadows there will be a cattle guard, the road will turn to dirt with some pot holes. Go around a few corners and the corral will be to your left. 4 OBCH MINUTES AUGUST 18,2010 Secretary Cher Bower The meeting was called to order at 7:00 by President Dave Swanberg. Guests Jane Byron and Mary McHugh were introduced. There were 19 people present The minutes of the June meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter by Dave Sunde,2nd by Steve McKinney. The Treasurers Report was given by Cathy Kvistad. Reports: Dave Swanberg gave the directors report. He handed out trail work ideas and on-going projects that Trygve Culp had compiled to be reviewed and get ideas for any additions. We need this information by the end of the month. Trail Boss: We were reminded that we are without a trail boss and that people should check with Dave Swanberg, Trygve Culp or the ride leader before each ride to make sure the information is correct. Circumstances had lead to some cancellations and confusion on some of the recent rides. Volunteer Hours: Peggy Swanberg had nothing to report, just a reminder to turn in your volunteer hours. Legislative: Dave Sunde reported on the successful VIP ride with Peter Goldmark, Commissioner of public Lands, Senator Bob Morton and State Rep. Shelly Short into the Loomis Forest. A nice lunch was prepared by Gail Sunde. Dave Sunde reported that he had a nice conversation with an assistant of Senator Maria Cantwell concerning among other things the use of chain saws in the wilderness for trail wrok, Senator Cantwell Phone # , He has an appointment with her, or her representative for sometime in Sept. Whistler Canyon Trail Ride Update: Dave Swanberg stated that the survey for the trail head is in progress and when it has been completed the county can begin their road process and then the trail head work can be started. Unfinished Business: Election for Secretary-Dave Sunde made a motion to accept the previous motion to nominate Cheryl Bower as Secretary. 23rd Gail Sunde, all in favor, Cheryl Bower is our new Secretary. Hangeman Flats Work Party has been Canceled. There are 500 trees down and the Forest Service needs to clear these before we can continue the work. RCO Grant WC Trail Modifications: Dave Swanberg reported on the on-going work on this project Rendezvous Chapter Donation: Dave Swanberg reported that the Trail Head News wants to print a list of donations made to get more input and competition between chapters to possibly acquire more and better donations. It was discussed whether to donate one of the two sets of gravel panniers that we have owned for some time and never used. The motion to donate 1 set was made by Dave Sunde, 2nd by Gail Sunde, motion passed, 1 nay Rendezvous Vendor Participation: The Trail Head news wants to print updates of the vendors participating. If you know of anyone who would like to be there have them contact Vendor Chair, Dick Bailey or dbailey@scattercreek.com New Business: Dave Swanberg reported that we need to work to convince the state to get more NOVA money for trail projects. Honeymoon Pass Trail Ride Sat Sept. 4: Frank Oborne will be the Trail boss and he is working out details of the ride. See the article in the Newsletter BCHW Calendars; Dave Swanberg stated that the calendars are ready to order at $10. each. If you place an order with Dave he will bring them back from the Board of Directors meeting. Let him know before Sept 25. This will save postage. Wilcox Work Party Mid Oct. TBD: Dave Swanberg reported that 2 Hitching posts, 2 Highlines and other work can be done soon. A date and volunteers need to be decided. Upper WC Ladies Ride Wed. Sept 8: Peggy Swanberg stated there has been some interest in an overnight camping before the ride. She is willing to do this. Contact Peggy for more information. Tri-Rivers: Kathy Kvistad talked to some former members of the dissolved Tri-Rivers Chapter and they are trying to regroup and be re accepted as a new chapter. If this passed they were wondering if out chapter would be willing to return part of, or all of the money that the state divided between the other chapters. After discussion a motion was made by Dave Sunde, 2nd by Gail Sunde to return part of the money. The motion was tabled until a later date, pending regrouping. (continued on next page)

Coming Events: WC Trail Clearing Tues. and Wed. at Dave Swanberg Chiliwist Ride: Sat, Sept 25, Nora Rappe For The Good of the Order: Jane Byron presented information for an Okanogan Rendezvous at the Okanogan County Fair Grounds May 13,14,& She would like the Okanogan Chapter to act as the Host Chapter with the Leave No Trace division paying for the rent of the arena, advertising, and cost of getting the LNT trailer to the event. Jan Bernell is the Chairman and the Wenatchee Chapter has agreed to help set up the events. Some of the possible events which will be open to the public, scouting groups and 4-H groups, would be LNT classes, Packer clinic, Trail Obstacle Course, Saw Certification class, Saddle fitting, Dutch oven demonstrations, Evening camp fires. This is not a complete list. She stated that they would not need any help from the Okanogan Chapter and we would be listed only as the Host. Dave Swanberg stated that we would consider this proposal at the November calendar meeting. If you have any input contact Dave. Mystery Gift Auction The gift was donated by Cher Bower. Lou Young was the highest bidder. She bought a necklace and earring set of rose quartz, wrapped in a red western bandana. 8:30 a motion to adjourn was made by Dave Sunde, and 2nd by Gail Sunde. RCO Grant: add preliminary work in order to start const. New Business:add more proposed trail work in order to obtain more NOVA funds. It happened to be Prime Rib night, which pleased many. You Bet that is all happening just outside Cle Elum on I-90 The Horse park is being built and designed to meet the riding and showing needs of all riders. There are galloping lanes for the eveners and combined drivers, obstacles for the competitive trail riders, and arenas for every conceivable discipline. There are connections to miles of forest trails for the back country Rider. Who owns the Horse Park? We do through a non-profit corporation. All of the riders in Washington own the Horse Park. It is here for us because we are making it happen It is a facility to be proud of and to enjoy the competition or just be a spectator. Join Now! Whistler Canyon Work Party/Ride We have a work party scheduled for Wednesday, September 21st. We will meet at the Wilcox Trailhead at 08:00 and start work at 09:00.

7 Whistler Canyon Work Party/Ride We have a work party scheduled for Wednesday, September 21st. We will meet at the Wilcox Trailhead at 08:00 and start work at 09:00. We have a trailhead sign, hitch rails, and highline poles to install. If there are enough of us we also want to mark the trail into the Wild Horse area. Our ride on Thursday the 22nd will meet at the Wilcox TH at 09:00 and we will leave at 10:00 sharp. Pack a lunch as we will be eating at one of the many overlooks along the way. We have not verified stock water at the TH and there may not be any along the ride route so plan accordingly.
