Chapter President : Stan Kvistad I m heading out later today to help trig and Sunde pack some planks in to a bridge job for the fs. Then I see where ferry co. bch has a work party Saturday building a 20 bridge, so if all goes well I might get over and give those guys a hand. Our July 11th & 12 th work party in the book was TBA and has been, hope ta see ya there. I had some good news yesterday the company I have been working for got a job here in the county so it looks like I should be home the rest of the year! Last night Cathy and I went to the Okanogan trails coalition meeting.they are having trouble getting younger members also, I don t know if the next generation will wake up in time or will we be the last ones out in the woods! I m just looking at the July schedule and we don t have a ride this mo. Just two weekend work parties at disappointment. But if ya can head over to ferry co. to their steak ride and have a good time. 2 On National Trails Day we worked on the 4th of July campground, the Cabin trail, and the 4th of July Ridge Trail. The low and dead branches in the trailhead area were removed as well as some thinning of the volunteer pine trees was accomplished. The Cabin trail which had previously been logged out was brushed out clear to the junction with the Antoine Trail which will be logged and brushed next week. The 4th of July Ridge Trail has been logged out from the campground to the junction with the South Side Trail. Al in all we had 9 OVC members involved plus 2 horses and 2 mules. 3 OVCBCHW Trail Boss Page June, 2014 Dave Sunde Where does the time go? June is about shot already. We started the month with a productive work party at the 4 th of July Trailhead and trails. As of today, between us and the USFS, the entire loop around the mountain has been cleared and the campsites at the trailhead have been cleaned of most of the encroaching brush. July is a month with several activities scheduled. First is the statewide work party at Haney Meadows (Ken Wilcox horse camp) over Trail Boss Dave Sunde riding May the 4 th of July weekend. Trygve and I will be there and we re hoping to see other chapter members show up too. We have 2 big work parties on DNR land in the Disappointment area of the Loomis Forest. The dates are: July and We have Gravel to haul, Carsonite markers to place, turnpike to build and trails to log out and brush out. We have made arrangements for a Sanican to be placed at the International Airport and Gail and her crew will be feeding us well on both weekends. There is plenty of room for campers, trailers and wall tents. The Ferry County Chapter is putting on their Annual Steak Ride at Lambert Creek on the 25 th through the 27 th of July. I hope to see some of you there. Trygve and I ll be manning our usual poker station up on top. 3

7 OVCBCHW EDITORIAL July 2014 Ted Sharr We have work parties scheduled on July th and July th at the Disappointment area. Trygve and I are going up on the 8 th to recon the work but we know this so far. 1. We need to Install Carsonite markers from the Pasayten Wilderness boundary across the park to the point where the trail enters the timber. This will require 2 or 3 riders and at least 1 pack animal. I estimate about 4 to 5 hours total. 2. We need to brush out the trail from the International Airport to the bridge. This is primarily lopper work with some possible pole saw opportunities. 3. We need to brush out the North Fork Trail and get rid of thousands of short pine. This is chain saw and lopper work. The trees are so thick in places that we ll need to cut out landings to accommodate our trash. The following items require a visit by Trygve and me before we can estimate how much work needs to be done. 1. Build a turnpike or puncheon over a long wet spot. We ll have a better idea after the 8 th but it will involve moving gravel. I plan on bringing my loader and RTV and hopefully others can bring ATVs. The DNR is supplying 30 yards of 3 and something smaller for top dressing. When we look at it on the 8 th we ll decide if we need to rent an excavator or not. We planned for one in the grant proposal which was approved so it won t cost the chapter any extra dollars. 2. We need to mark out a possible reroute of the trail up the fire line for DNR approval to get us away from constantly needing logout in the spring. It may also require a couple of post and rail drift fences to discourage the cows from cutting the switchbacks. (Like that is even possible.) Since all this work is included in a grant, the chapter has decided to provide food for all the workers on both weekends. I don t know what is on the menu yet but Gail is going all out. We are making arrangements for a Sanican to be located at the International Airport and people are welcome to camp there on either or both weekends. I will bring about 100 gallons of water but I d suggest campers bring a few gallons from home. The only people who will need pack and saddle stock are those placing the Carsonite markers. So you can leave Dobbin at home unless you just want to go for a ride in the evening. It is a beautiful area. 14 Minutes of June 18, 2014 Okanogan Valley Chapter of Back Country Horsemen of Washington Our Vice President Frank Oborne called the meeting to order at 7:00. Two guests were in attendance, new member Charlotte Meese and guest Dennis Carr. Upon asking if there were additions or corrections to the May Minutes, Cathy Kvistad made note of a correction under Whistler Canyon Trail Refunds, the refund total of $11,000, be corrected to $1, A motion was made by Tryg Culp and seconded by Gail Sunde to accept the corrected Minutes. Approved. Treasurers Report: Cathy Kvistad gave her report and we are solvent. A motion to approve was made by Tryg Culp and seconded by Dave Sunde. Approved. REPORTS Director s report: The WA. State board meeting is on Sat. and if anyone wants anything from the store let Dave know. He reminded us to think about nominations for the annual awards presentation. Tryg and Dave will check into bright colored vests to be worn at work parties. Linda Oborne made a motion to purchase a variety of stickers to have on hand for member purchase. Ted Sharr seconded it. Approved. Dave Sunde talked about a new member packet. It will be looked into. Trail Boss: Dave Sunde stated that the complete report was on the web site. He reported that Tryg C., Dave Swanberg, Dave Sunde and Steve McKinney met Justin (from Fish and Wildlife) at the Carter Mt. Trailhead to mark a new trail of approximately 1.5 miles and to make improvements to the current trail. Justin will apply for a grant to complete the work. If we get the grant for $ it will be good for 2 years. We will know more next year. Dave reported that the 4 th of July trails are open and passable. In the future trails around Conconully could use work. Dave also mentioned the free Firearm safety classed open to the public. Contact Michael Blake. FYI Weyhauser on the west side has started charging for recreational use of their land. The 2 nd annual Haney Meadows work camp is the 4 th of July weekend. They need wranglers and sawyers. Legislative: See web site for report. Volunteer Hours: Cheryl Johnson stated that this quarter we have 2100 hours logged at a value of $57, If we do work for Ferry County report the hours to Cheryl and she and FC will sort things out. Website: Dave Sunde stated that there was nothing new but to continue to send in pictures. Newsletter: Ted Sharr stated that there was nothing new. Advertising: Linda Oborne said that she had put an ad in the paper about our meeting and posted information flyers at different locations. A motion was made by Tryg C. and seconded by Ted Sharr to pull off the table and reopen discussion on the purchase of a club camera. Dave Sunde made a motion to buy a 12 mp camera, case, extra battery and memory card for no more then $ Tryg C seconded it. Approved. Linda Oborne will make the purchase. Social Director: Gail Sunde told us that the Cariboo Restaurant has been closed and we need to find another location for the south end meetings. (CONTINUED ON PAGE 15) 14

15 UNFINISHED BUSINESS (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 14) VIP RIDE: Dave Sunde stated that things were still in the planning stages and so far no one has RSVP. Ribs were suggested for the meal. RCO Grant: Dave Swanberg stated that if we get it, it would be $ good for 2 years to be used on Carter Mt. Trail. Whistler Canyon refunds: Cathy Kvistad stated that all of the refund checks had been mailed except the Olympic chapter and Dave Sunde said he would call them again to get the proper name for the refund. OVCBCH JACKETS: Linda O. gave us some information. It was decided to put an article in the newsletter to get input on how many people would be interested and how many jackets we are talking about. It is tabled until next month. NEW BUSINESS Whistler Canyon-Kinross: Dave Swanberg stated that he had put in a request for a donation from Kinross for $18, for the purchase of a vault toilet. The chapter has $10, and we would need another $ to dig the hole and prepare for the installation. The toilet will cost $26, It is a mens-womens 2-sided vault toilet to be ordered from a company in Spokane and they will need an answer by Sept 1 st to get the order in to complete before fall. Cathy Kvistad stated that Stan had approved $ to Christenson to cut the grass in the Whistler Canyon Trail Head Parking area and around the sanican. LNT: Steve McKinney filled us in again on the LNT class and said he was going to write a letter to Jane Byram about proper disposal of manure in high, medium and low use areas. BCHW WORK HANEY MEADOWS: Tryg C. reminded us of the work party over the 4 th of July weekend. He said they feed everyone well and they can use a lot of help. BCHW AWARDS: Dave Sunde reminded us again to think of deserving people for the different awards.
