2 President s Pondering "Never Squat With Your Spurs On" Will Rogers Will Rogers, who died in a 1935 plane crash in Alaska with bush pilot Wiley Post, was one of the greatest political country/cowboy sages this country has ever known. Some of his sayings worth remembering: 1. Never slap a man who's chewing tobacco. 2. Never kick a cow chip on a hot day. 3. There are two theories to arguing with a woman. Neither works. 4. Never miss a good chance to shut up. 5. Always drink upstream from the herd. 6. If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging. 7. The quickest way to double your money is to fold it and put it back into your pocket. 8. There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading. The few who learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves. 9. Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment. 10. If you're riding' ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it's still there. 11. Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier'n puttin' it back. 12. After eating an entire bull, a mountain lion felt so good he started roaring. He kept it up until a hunter came along and shot him. The moral: When you're full of bull, keep your mouth shut. 3 Meeting of the Nisqually Chapter of the Back Country Horsemen Minutes For NC General Meeting February 5, 2019 At in Yelm, WA President, called meeting to order at 7:07 PM read the mission statement. The minutes as stated in the February Newsletter were approved. Barb Veal Hoof Prints is off to a good start! Please join in the fun, even if you don t ride much. Track your hours riding, miles are calculated at four miles per each hour. Barb introduced Joe Longmire, our returning guest. Lola May we increased our account in January by $163.00, all our accounts are solvent. Carole Kowitt talked about newsletter production expenses, stamps are now $.55 for one ounce of mail. The newsletter usually weighs almost 2 oz. Printing has increased. There was discussion. Andrea Cotey suggested a short version to be mailed and a full version to be on the FB private group and on our website. Sunset said she could print, in black and white, any copies that needed to be mailed. A motion was raised to have a short version for print and have Sunset print the needed copies. She would get the copies to Carole Kowitt or to Kathy Talbot for them to mail as needed and to bring copies to each general meeting. The motion passed. Robbie Meisner She presented her flyer. (A copy of her flyer is in the February Newsletter.) Please , call or visit your government representatives and raise your concern for horses being allowed in public lands. Please do the on February 22, before the BCHW Legislature Day in Olympia. BCHW Legislature Day is February 25 th. said it was great to visit representatives, and to call them as well. Vivian Eason asked about our horse industry and the amount of taxes we contribute in state and federal budget. It is considerably more than someone who rides a bike. There was discussion. Janet Brundige as Trail Scout, she is happy with so many rides on the calendar and to be back involved. She discussed the Joe Watt ride on May 18 th. Said there was going to be camping and it was best to stay up at the top of the camping area. Discussed the Keenes Horse Camp. And the July 31 to August 4 th event is not at Green River. It is a BCHW Special Project at Mount Saint Helens National Monument. It is a Work Party and would be good to attend. Lewis County Chapter is hosting it according to Tony Karniss. Janet will get with him for more details. (continued on page 4 & 5) Page 3 of 14
4 There was discussion about the chainsaw class, requirements, and training. The requirements include having completed a CPR class and a certified first aide class before getting your chainsaw certificate. David Boe clarified that CPR and first aid were necessary to have completed before you can get your Chainsaw Certification. Vivian Eason said she knew people who could provide our chapter with classes for CPR and first aid. She will work out the details and get back to us. March 24 rd is our next ride at Nisqually Mashel State Park and is hosted by Sandra and. It is on a Sunday. Details will be in the March newsletter. Kathy Talbot Two of our four yield signs have been posted at each end of the Area 23 parking lot. They are up high and out of the way with the hope that no one bothers with them. There was discussion on where to hang the other two yield signs. Nisqually Mashel was mentioned and other JBLM areas. March 24 is our next ride at Nisqually Mashel State Park. March is State Rendezvous in Ellensburg. If you are going to attend the dinner, then you need to fill out the form and send in your money. Lola is to give Kathy Talbot a check for $50 to secure one table for our chapter. She has six or seven people for that table so far. Deadline is March 5 th. If you want a form, contact her at the break. Next month s speaker is Joan Burlingame, March 5 th, info is on the calendar. (Did not get what she was going to talk about, sorry.) Note: On 2/6/2019 Sondra Johnston called Joan Burlingame. She told her that she plans to speak on Middle Fork trail along the Snoqualmie River and Pierce County parks. Rendezvous CPR classes, one at 9 am and another one in the afternoon. There is a first aid class also. See the schedule on BCHW.org website. We have a new ad for the newsletter from Janet Brundige for a farrier, Cody Wallace Horseshoeing. His card will be in the March newsletter. Vivian Eason will work on getting information about where, when and what classes can be provided to support anyone in the chapter to get a chainsaw certificate. A break was taken at 7:54pm. The meeting resumed at 8:03 pm. Sondra Johnston s hosted ride on April 20 th is on Area 10, alternative is Area 13. Jeff Fletcher will get the paperwork in order with JBLM. Page 4 of 14
5 A motion was made to have Kathy Talbot added to the signature cards for all chapter banking accounts. She is to add her signature to all banking accounts owned by Nisqually Chapter BCHW. Motion passed. Andrea Cotey She said the open period for membership was from October to March of the following year. The grace period is until March 31, We have 128 members at this point. 73% of them have already renewed. She explained that she sends out and has sent out any of the welcome packets that were not given out at the general meetings. Kathy Talbot and she will call the 24 or so members who have not renewed yet. She has the chapter business cards for anyone who wants them. Andrea will send a membership list to Vivian Eason and Kelly Pankau. Vivian Eason announced the Mossy Rock Mountain Man Ride on February 23 rd in Silver Creek. Mountain Man Ride and Chili Feed. 114 Ciannigan Hill Road, Silver Creek, WA. Rain or shine or snow. Sign up at 9 am. Last rider out 11 am. $20 includes ride, chance for a prize and chili feed. Contact us on Facebook. Fred or Marsha She highly recommended the ride. Horses should be in fairly good shape as there are a few short climbs. She also mentioned a meeting on February 13 th in Rochester with Department of Fish and Wildlife. WDFW's notice of the 2/13 public meeting for Scatter Creek Wildlife Area planning. Horses are not allowed in many of the areas. Contact her for details. GOOD OF THE ORDER Jeff Fletcher assured us we did not have to call in to any of our group rides on JBLM lands. We have paperwork that holds that area open for us even when it is closed to the public. One of our chainsaws was stolen while it was at the Fletcher s place being fixed. Vivian Eason is retiring and wants to be more involved. said he was still working with Nisqually Mashel State Park. He will be contacting Randi Becker as Sondra Johnston suggested. gave a demonstration of a way to deal with muddy places on your property using a fiber 4-inch woven fabric, placed in a dugout area and filling with rock, not sand or pea gravel, will solve the muddy problem. He has all the supplies at his store. He will be doing a demo at his place, Servine Feed, nd Street South in Roy, off highway 507 and north of McKenna, on February 20 th at 3:00 pm. All are welcome. 6 Messages from our members From Andrea Cotey: If you can't ride your horse during snowy weather - instead make a snow pony. My daughter made it. I only made a snowman. I hope you're getting through this weather OK. It's challenging. From Joe Barcomb: Please call me at (253) to pick up any photos or thumb drives for the State Rendezvous March We need your photos please. From Janet Brundige: My farrier did a fabulous job with my horse who has a club foot. The horse is in much better shape now. Give him a call if you are looking for a farrier, Thank you. See info attached. February Ride AT A GLANCE Several chapters joined us for a ride on Area 23. Nisqually, Pierce County, Tahoma, Capital Riders and Scatter Creek, to name a few! Over forty people got up and out to enjoy the break of good weather. Great delicious food was shared. Friendships abounded, some new, many old. (continued on page 9) Page 6 of 14
