1 SOUTH VENICE YACHT CLUB YACHT YARN VOLUME XXXVI ISSUE 3 March 2018 COMMODORE Our February General Meeting was NOT very well attended. We had about 30 people, but the food was excellent. Hopefully our March 13 th meeting will bring out more members. We now have 200 members. February diner dances were a big success. The Valentine Dinner was open to the public and we ended up with 123 people. Our Building fund is now up to about $33,500 and it was decided to give a partial distribution of $25,000 to our benefactors that loaned us $50,000. We should all be proud of the fact that we were able to pay back half of our loan in five months thru the hard work and donations of our club members. With the help of all our members, we may be able to repay the other half by the end of We have already scheduled another Jewelry Sale for March 25th for our next Fund Raiser. We will need a lot of volunteers to help make this a success since it falls on the Sunday after our March 24 th Dinner Dance. Tom Wilson My idea of Standing Committees to take advantage of the vast knowledge of our club members is not going over very well. I have had No One contact me for a committee. Therefore, let us try another approach of taping our vast knowledge of club members. Would any member like to share their knowledge as an ADVISOR to the Club in their area of expertise? We do not want to spend Club Money on outside advise if we can get it from our club members. We need advice in the following areas, LEGAL, INSURANCE, TAXES, & FINANCE. Our ADVISORS will only have to be available by phone to answer our questions and give us advice on the many items that come up to the Board. This would be a Great Help to the Board and would not take as much time as Committee Meetings. If you are interested in sharing your knowledge, please e- mail me at wilsontr@prodigy.net or call VICE COMMODORE March. Of 2018! Time is just flying by. And the South Venice Yacht Club marches on. We will hold our St. Patrick s Day festivities Saturday, March 10, starting at 5:30 PM. Our entertainment that evening will be Sheri Johnson La Croix. Then the 4 th Satruday, March 24, will be our Western Bar-B-Que. This year we ll be serving chicken and ribs! The Wanna-Bees will play for us. Ya-Hoo! Note, please, on the calendar we have messed with our themes some have moved, others have gone away. So cleck your current calendar in this YY edition for up to date info. March 25 we will hold our second Jewelry sale we are still in the fund raising mode to finish paying off our IRMA debt. That s a Sunday it ll happen from 1 to 4. Bring your friends and a bit of cash and pick up truly wonderful stuff. Bring $3 or a piece of jewelry as your entry fee. SVYC receives every dime raised Jewelry to the Rescue does this as a charitable thing and takes home no money. She rehabs, cleans, etc. the jewelry that comes in the door for the next event she covers. Dues are coming in, s-l-o-w-l-y, but coming in. If you are one of the slow pokes and you intend to stay a member please go from a tortoise to being a hare and get it done! If you are not planning on staying, please let me know. ( ) And you will be missed!
2 VOLUME XXXVI ISSUE 3 PAGE 2 Lionel is still offering dance lessons on Monday s at 7PM. Take advantage of that he s doing this volunteer and the fees all go to the Club - $15/couple or $10 per person. We have a new group using the Clubhouse from 10 to noon Thursday mornings. A group of folks are gathering to paint. (art, not walls ). There is no teacher everyone helps each other. If you are an artist and want to join them, you ll be welcome. Cost will be $4 per week. And as usual, basket weaving, line dancing, cards and are all in full swing. Check the calendar for times and dates. ACTING CHAIR OF THE BUILDINGS & GROUNDS COMMITTEE (THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN). With the major repairs done to the building we can again focus on the little things that need fixing, like doors, lights and shrubbery. A group of volunteers met last month to trim back the bushes around the clubhouse, fertilize and mulch the beds and power wash the walls out front. A couple of new shutters were installed and the entrance rugs were cleaned. Next on the agenda is the trimming of the Brazilian pepper 'hedge' that surrounds the property. It's gaining ground over near the boat storage area and in back near the newer kayak racks. The Bruce Weaver mangrove needs to be pruned back around the launch ramp as well. We'll get the "Magnificent Seven" together again and take of that during February. One more big project needs to be finished and that's the canopy over the front door. As this is a big expense we may wait until our debts get closer to being paid off, but it really needs to be done. Looks really bare out front without it. Finally, I did not get the name of the kind gentleman who fixed the Audio System last week but it's sounding great and was something that needed doing for a year. You know who you are, come forward and take a bow at the dance. Thank You! FLEET CAPTAIN Welcome to our new members and members joining our Paddle Crew. I've enjoyed being out on the water with you and meeting at dinner dances. Our Paddle Crew has discovered some islands on the east side of Blackburn Bay from the launch at Casey Key. We paddled into a strong head wind on this day and also discovered a creek that was a little scary especially after a local told us he shoots water moccasin there with his shot gun. Our next adventure was calm and beautiful from Cedar Point Park to Stump Pass where we walked out to see all the new beach created from the Stump Pass jetty project. The paddle from the club house down to Manasota Beach, which is 2.8 miles one way, is always enjoyable. The turn out for this paddle was one of our biggest with 16 paddlers. Members are always welcome to bring guests as long as they are experienced and understand we paddle five miles in two hours. Connie Anderson I started auditing rack fee payments. If you are still a member but removed your boat from the rack, please me at connie.s.anderson@msn.com. Stump Pass with member Donna Packard.

4 VOLUME XXXVI ISSUE 3 PAGE 4 Pete was a member for too short a time - those of you who were at the St. Patrick's Day party a few years back may remember him attending in a full kilt accompanied by his sister. He did, after all, play the bagpipes and will be greatly missed. A Memorial/Remembrance service for Pete Thompson was held at the South Venice Yacht Club on Feb. 3, Above are a couple pictures taken at the service. The Thompson family would like to express their deep gratitude to the club s members for the use of the Yacht club and the many energetic members who helped make Pete s memorial service happen. The outdoor seating looking out at the spacious sky, with the backdrop of water, and the colorful kayaks made SVYC very fitting for the place to hold a special celebration of his life. Many Thanks -
