the observatons made n a letter wrtten by George J Ackerman n 1904 about hs vst to Crystal Lake n 1890 At a vst to Crysfal Lake n 1890 I found the old saw mll stll n runnng order the old wheel log carrage and gearng stll dong servce probably the same as when my great grand father John L Ackerman was accustomed to adjust the logs n place and saw them nto plank and tmber The beautful pond or lake as t s called surrounded by woods and hgh hlls was lke a huge mnor lyng flat framed n a wreath of varegated folage nestled down among the hlls so quet and unobstru sve wth no sound to be heard save lke the breeze rustlng through the leaves or the murmurng of the water fallng over the dam seemed a place ftted for the repose of nature But the hand of man n the march of mprovement lke tme has changed all thngs and the only thng left now to mark the spot of the mll pond s a small brook hat wnds ts tortuous course through the meadow on ts way to the Ramapo Rver Braun The Atlas of Bergen County Bromley 1912 shows the mll and the mll pond Ths map also depcts what appears to be amll buldng however t s not dentfed as such An nvestgaton of the US Manufactures Census of 1800 to 1900 shows that wthn northern New Jersey the number of sawrlls and grstmlls at the begnnng of ths perod were about the same As better woodlands were deforested and the number of lumber companes wth large land holdngs ncreased small sawmlls could not com pete The 1900 Manufactures Census states the tmber sutable for mllng has been removed and a large propor ton cleared for cultvaton New now Jersey contans however much valuable second growth tmber The cut s not large and lumberng s not an mportant ndustry US Manufactures Census 1900 The depleton of nearby woodlands combned wth the growth of large lumber companes may explan why the Ackerman Sawmll ceased operaton n the late 1800s Feld Investgaton The feld nvestgaton conssted of a pedestran survey followed by the mappng of the extant remans of the mll and ts related features No subsurface testng was under taken The survey had the followng objectves to dentfy the remans of the mll buldng and to search for exposed artfacts such as mll tools Careful measurement of the mll dams was completed and they were examned for repars or mprovements In addton the mpact of the upgradng of the New York Susquehanna and Western Ralroad on the ste was also assessed The Ackerman Sawmll ste les approxmately 200 feet west of New Jersey Route 208 It s located along the steepest grade of the New York Susquehanna and Western Ralroad Fgures 1 and 2 The sols of the sawmll ste are alluval and contan stream deposted sand slt and clay The area svegetaton s a mxed woodland the dom nant trees beng maple and brch Krause 1980 The ste s set n a valley created over the centures by the eroson from the flow of the Pond Brook The mll exploted the natural contours of the land by dammng the brook at ts narrowest pont Fgure 2 The survey revealed a small earthen dam located just south of the mll ste Fgure 3 Ths secton of dam s 29 feet long 29 feet wde and 6 feet hgh It was bult of rubble and earth Along the south sde of the dam s a lad stone wall facng the mll pond Ths was held together wth an early form of Portland cement tnewlon 1976 The functoned of ths wall was to prevent water from erodng the earthen dam Ths secton of the dam ends close to a sharp slope near the old road that served the mll Two features were encountered near the base of the dam close to the brook The frst was a set of beams lad nto the stream bed These beams could have been part of the housng for a water wheel although another par of sup ports s mssng The second feature conssts of a two course dry lad stone wall Its locaton ndcates that ths was also part of the wheel pt A large boulder used n the constructon of ths secton of dam protects the wheel pt from eroson On the downstream sde of the dam a broken cant hook was recovered These artfacts were used to roll logs nto the mll Sloane The western secton of the dam s the largest of all It measures 61 feet long and s comprsed of three sectons Large stones that could have served as eroson protecton now le n the stream near the washed out base of the west ern edge of the dam About 26 feet from the east sde of ths secton a stone apron dam was encountered Fgure 4 Ths s the strongest type of dam known Constructon of early apron dams used stones wth wooden aprons exten dng nto the up stream waters The dam at the Ackerman Sawmll was an mprovement on an old desgn Mortar bonds the core rocks and Portland Cement secured the nclne Ths porton of the dam was slghtly lower than the rest dvertng water away from the earthen sectons n lmes of hgh water Leffel
