Much of the remans have been lost. However> a splendd specmen of some approxmate 140 acres have been preserved by the Booth!11 Assocaton. Ths secton contans a major arch of the tral as t curved across the Kansas countrysde. Also on ths parcel are several separate sectons of the ruts (see accompanyng photograph). The ruts at ths pont stretch some 400 feet n wdth. When one of the ruts would become too deep, wagons would be shfted and new troughs would be dug nto the earth. There have been a number of ntrusons whch have severed the tral n varous locatons. These ntrusons nclude U.S. 50, a ralroad and rrgaton dtch bult n the 1890 f s whch wnds back and forth across the ruts. Cattle grazng on the ruts have also greatly mpared sectons of the tral. n addton to the above mentoned ntrusons, the Arkansas Rver has shfted as much as half a mle to the south from ts orgnal channel. Despte these alteratons n the hstorc scene, the well defned ruts retan a great deal of ther hstorc ntegrty.

Forty-eght days before, they had left San Mguel--ffty mles southeast of Santa Fe. n ther packs were the fruts of ther journey to New Mexco. As townspeople gathered to welcome Captan Wllam Becknell and hs companons, the packs were opened. Not the furs of an ndan Trader splled out, but heavy rawhde sacks. One of the traders held hgh a sack and slashed ts thongs. Slver pesos tumbled to the ground and rolled nto the gutter. Thus the expedton of Wllam Becknell begns a perod of western mgraton, commerce and communcaton all usng one of the major thoroughfares of the day--the Santa Fe Tral. The Santa Fe Tral Ruts are owned by the Boothll Assocaton whch has purchased of the orgnal property for the purpose of preservaton. Ths parcel of land s located nne mles west of Dodge Cty, Kansas on U.S. Route 50. HSTORY The adventure of Captan Wllam Bucknell saw the frst successful Mssour to Santa Fe tradng expedton and set the state for enterprsng men to throng the tral to the Cty of Holy Fath. n ths apparently smple act was summed up much that lent to the Santa Fe Tral and ts namesake cty an ar of El Dorado. t was partly ths that caused early traders to gamble ther lves and fortunes aganst dstance, terran, weather, hostle ndans and the caprce of Mexcan customs offcals. The Santa Fe tral was more than an escape valve for hgh sprted men, or smply the route by whch the mule came to Mssour. t was a commercal and cultural lnk between the borderlands of the Unted States and Mexco. Manfest Destny would travel ths tral. At ts end was an empre of mesa and mountan, of canyon and rver and of vast dstances and desert, all rpe for the pckng. The tral then became a mltary hghway clogged wth the freght and banners of war. After the Army of the West had done ts blo0 dless duty, and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hdalgo had sealed the conquest, ths empre had to be admnstered and protected and provsoned. Thus men and materal for ths ggantc task came over the Santa Fe Tral. All that followed, the Mexcan War, the gold rush, the Cvl War, stagecoach and emgrant tran and the constant plod of oxen haulng tandem freghters was part of ths task of consoldatng the conquest of Fnally, the ralroad came, pushng the eastern termnus of the tral ever westward, untl by 1880 there was no more tral. Lke the bearded trader and the fabulous crew whch followed the tral, t too faded nto the annals of legend and conversaton of glorous days past. Somethng grand was lost. Days of adventure and great accomplshment as well as the tmes of trals and defeat were gone forever. But the products of those years are yet apparent through a boomng subcontnent of the modern Southwest. Ths s the true sgnfcance of the Santa Fe Tral, the frst great tral of the West.

The best secton of ground to be desgnated the hstorc landmark s owned by the Boothll Assocaton. Ths acreage s establshed exclusvely for the preservaton of the hstorc property. Other lands on whch the ruts are located are n commercal use as grazng lands for cattle. Moreover, plans call for agrcultural use. The State of Kansas has bult a hghway turn-off for access to the ruts by vstors. The ste lacks any nterpretve facltes, though the landmark plaque sts on a stone marker.
