THE REAL THNGS The other mornng stood near the meat counter n one of our bg department stores where prces had once agan jumped that day. Near me notced an elderly woman who seemed a bt dstressed. casually mentoned to her the new prce ncrease and she sad "Yes t makes thngs stll more dffcult honestly don't know what to buy you see my husband and retred on a small penson years ago and now t just won't cover thngs. My poor old chap worked hard all hs days and now just can't afford to even gve hm a decent meal." As she spoke saw the glnt of tears "er eyes and caught a mental glmpse the harsh unthnkng and unfeelng world n whch we lve. began to thnk of the seventy-fve per cent of our local communty who have come here to spend the evenng of ther days people who have worked as long as they could stand the stran brought up ther famles only to have them sacrfced on the altars of mammoth ndustralzaton or of wars and strfe. Generally they do not complan what s the use?... they tghten ther belts wear ther old clothes and st huddled over a bt of fre or dg n ther lttle gardens just watng to snk nto that oblvon whch s ther lot. They greet you wth a quet smle as they lved long enough to realze t s all just a part of ths lfe. Qup. A SAND-DUNE PCNC There are no sand-dunes at or around Cordova Bay for whch everyone should be thankful just n case an nvtaton should ever arrve to attend a pcnc on one. However vvd an magnaton you may have t would be mpossble to conceve what t s lke. Usually sand-dunes are mles away across wde stretches of sand wet and dry and look very pcturesque n the dstance wth patches of what appears to be verdant pasture growng there. These partcular sand-dunes were a dstance of about sx mles or so from our homes. t requred the hrng of donkeys and donkey-men for the occason. t was a yearly sacrfce on the part of Mot.hers of chldren. Fathers. g-norant of the joys of ths outng could always be cajoled the frst tme but never ag-an despte the pleadngs of lovng chldren and an adorng wfe! The preparatons had to start at. 5 :00 a.m. so the chldren always slept ftfully owng to the exctement and were awake by 4 :00 a.m. The unearthly hour was due to the tde. t was always breakfast at the sand-dunes. Thf'l never was conducve to a good start. Food had been packed the nght before and clothes put n the rght order. Varous frends wth chldren g-athered. loadng the donkeys wth food and chldren who went ahead whle the adults walked. Durng the journey some chld lost a shoe or hat or fell nto the water long before t was expected too. After about an hour and a half we arrved. Mothers prepared breakfast chldren paddled and Fathers sat around makng helpful suggestons. Breakfast. By ths tme the male populaton were waxng mpatent so they were served frst. Seated on the sde of a sand-dune whch was very dry and slppery they were probably gven a hard boled egg n one hand and a cup of hot coffee n the other. Just as they were about to eat or drnk ether an adorng off-sprng would pounce down wth some exctng remark knockng the egg nto the sand and spllng hot coffee all over Father's knee. There was reproof n Father's voce though restraned for t was a pcnc whle Mother tred to dstract the attenton by handng another egg or sandwch and quckly fllng up the cup and feedng the errng chld. Then another chld covered wth wet sand s suddenly overcome wth affecton for Daddy whose very luscous sandwch dsappears nto the sand lke the egg. The reproof not so restraned and an awesome quet steals over the party. Almost mmedate y LTe 1ast mollt lruf ot reakrast has been swallowed a Father hauls out hs watch looks at the sea and n loud and forceful tone announces that "gonsr home" tme has come. The Fathers all suddenly become most helpful gatherng ltter loadng the donkeys and callng the chldren. The trek home always pleasant and then when the chldren are well out of earshot and all the famles have returned to ther bungalows the Fathers n kndly but no uncertan terms state ther determnaton never never never to pcnc at the sand-dunes agan. And each year the chldren beg to go and each year Mothers try to evade the ssue and each year the agonzng performance s enacted BUT the only Fathers present are those who have "never gone ths way before." E. G. PLAY GROUP FOR PRE-SCHOOL CHLDREN The Cordova Bay Co-operatve Play Group for Pre-School Chldren (3-6 years) wll re-open on September 6th at the home of Mrs. Macntosh Cordova Bay Road. Anyone desrous of enrollng chldren should get n touch wth ether Mrs. Macntosh or Mrs. J. Rckard Fenn Road (P.O. Cordova Bay mal address) wthout delay as there are a lmted number of vacances. CANADA Edtoral: NATONAL ANTHEM SONGS AND FLAGS Judged by ther words most of the Natonal Anthems appear to have come nto beng as an ncentve to ether aggresson or defence. Canada's Natonal Anthem wavered for a consderable perod between "0 Canada" and "The Maple Leaf" the former havng apparently won favour and been fnally accepted. n ths t wll probably be agreed that we have been fortunate as the word "Maple" when sung lent tself too readly to beng pronounced "Ma-pul" wth the accent on the "pul". The melody of "0 Canada" s brght and attractve and the words are expressve and unaggressve but n spte of ths' t does not qute strke the rght note for the closng of an entertanment and ~ t s probably for ths reason that t s so' often sung as an openng number whle "God Save The Kng" s sung at the close. The Brtsh Natonal Anthem whch s so well known especally among older people who are more used to t than to "0 Canada" could possbly be mproved and made more n keepng wth the present constant efforts to preserve the peace f for the frst verse whch s the one usually sung there were substtuted the second verse: "Thy chocest gfts n store On hm be pleased to pour Long may he regn May he defend ou r laws And ever gve us cause To sng wth heart and voce God Save the Kng." The old German Natonal Anthem "The Watch on the Rhne" was a beautful pece of work both words and musc and was very far from showng the aggressveness whch has been so apparent n ther character and durng the Frst World War ts place was taken by "God Wth Us" whch n ts blatancy and assumpton of havng receved favours from Heaven not granted to other natons s on a par wth "Rule Brtanna" now fortunately seldom heard. "The Star Spangled Banner" of our neghbours to the south apparently a product of ther war between the North and the South takes a lttle gettng used to and seems to put a consderable stran on the voce wth ts hgh notes rrespectve of the key n whch t s s~rrg but s no worse than any of the others. There appears to be no partcular song whch can be sad to be respresentatve of Canada unless there s one n the French language. England s n much the same poston unless "The Lass of Rchmond Hll" whch appears n most of the Old Country Song Books s to be taken as fllng the poston. Wales on the other hand s well provded for wth "Men of Harlech" whch has the added advantage that by changng the tme and words t becomes the well known Hymn "All Through the Nght." Scotland s smlarly well off wth "Scots Wha Hae" the song wrtten round the Battle of Bannockburn whch a change of tme and words makes over nto the lament "The Flowers of the Forest." reland offers a choce of several whch would nclude "Kllarney" "Mother Machree" and 'The Low Backed Car." The Unon Flag or Jack as t s commonly but ncorrectly called s stll the flag of Canada although there appears to be a desre that we have a flag of our own and attempts have been made to desgn one whch wll meet wth general approval but so far wthout success. Ths s not to be wondered at wth two natonaltes to please n addton to the vared tastes of those who are nterested. The tas~ s made more dffcult by the necessty of desgnng an Ensgn for the use of Qur shps. Weare stll a long way from "The Brotherhood of Man" and "Federaton of the World" but f we can keep the peace and work steadly towards that goal t cannot fal to come. t may be that before we can get v- where near such an end we.wll rel.-.../e to gve up certan soveregn rghts and stop stressng our natonalsm but the soluton les much deeper than that and does not appear to be attanable untl the communst countres stop hammerng t nto ther peoples that democracy and communsm cannot lve sde by sde n amty. The attanment of that deal may requre a revoluton and hstory has proven that a great mass of people can be rgdly held down only for a certan length of tme before they rebel. BROWSNG... Lookng over the back numbers of Spndrft can to the wrter at least be productve of surprses. The summer numbers for 1948 and...j reveal that our bus servce n those summers was consderably better than t s now. We had at that tme eleven busses leavng Cordova Bay on week-days and eght on Sundays aganst our present f.ervce of eght on Week-days and four on Sundays. n other numbers the paper or ts edtors were complanng of the poor attendance at the Monthly General Meetngs. A complant whch s stll vald. The July and August meetngs just past as Mr. George Rckard ponts out were unusually anmated and t would not be exaggeratng to say that the August Meetng scntllated whch would go to prove that a busness meetng can also be entertanng. Work on the Hall Buldng stll goes on thanks to a number of the fathful but more help s needed. Here s a $64.00 queston. s our man road properly called Cordova Bay Road or Marne Drve and f the former s correct where does t begn and end and how does t acqure numbers runnng nto the Fve Thousands? There was plenty of both on the frst Wednesday of August when we met at McMorran's. Debate f not taken serously s fun and our Presdent as Charman had hs hands full but seemed reluctant to rng the bell n the rounds and nsst on "tme". Mr. Savage dd not lve up to hs name n reportng the result of Klondke Nte. thought he was very subdued but notced a humorous glnt n hs eye. After takng all the blame for mstakes he added grst to the mll by puttng the Nte's proft of 250 dollars on the table. Roads and bus servces came n for ther usual hymn of hate but real acton s stll lackng. Mght be a good dea to nvte our Saanch Councl representatve to a meetng and try to cajole hm nto helpng on the road questons. A lot of unnecessary talk about reparng a "rght of way" to the beach made no notceable mprovement on the actual path. A bref reference to the Regatta by Mr. Sutton called for beach combng for logs and a stated decson to gve away a refrgerator. lve n hopes. Owng to the lateness of the hour a report on Spndrft whch had been requested from Mr. Genn had to be deferred untl the September Meetng n order to gve tme for dscusson. Out of our 250 members some forty turned up at the meetng to help spend our funds and plan to help one another. The meetng the debate the coffee and bscuts are all free.
