3 Stage 2 Rver Man route he Englsh t WALES Offa s Dyke Warfare has played a major role n the hstory of the valley; the number of related features found n the valley demonstrates ths fact. he features span the ages, from Roman encampments (Rhyn Park), Offa's Dyke (ronygarth), and the mposng Chrk Castle. Offa's Dyke conssts of a 168 mle long earthen bank, whch s at tmes 8 metres hgh and n places s accompaned by a western dtch. It runs across the Valley and when constructed n the 8th century dvded Merca (Saxon) from the ndependent rtsh Kngdoms (Celts). Some experts beleve that the dyke may well be older, datng from Roman tmes. he most mpressve features of ths secton are vews of Chrk Castle. It s a border castle, constructed n the late 13th century by Edward I. It formed part of the "Rng of Stone" bult n North Wales to cement the kng's control over the natve Offa s Dyke Castle ENGLAND ronygarth 4500 Chrk Castle rout farm Fshng Pont Faen rdge populaton. he desgn of the castle has been compared to that of eaumars, Anglesey. he buldng and gardens are well worth a vst. hs s a Natonal rust property, Check the openng tmes. It may have been bult orgnally wth an mposng double-towered gatehouse, mrrorng the remanng drum towers. he castle gatehouse would have faced towards Wales, presentng a palpable menace to the rebellous Welsh prnces. Some hstorans beleve that t was bult on the ste of an earler Welsh castle, but no physcal proof has been found. he castle has had many owners before Sr homas Myddelton purchased t n the year 1595 for 5,000. Havng survved the Englsh cvl war relatvely unscathed, the Myddeltons have lved there to ths day.
