Louis Vieux, who was half-frech, half-pottawatoie, was bor i 189 where the city of Chicago ow stads. origially his ae was Louis Jarveaur but it was chaged to Louis Vieux o the goveret's tribal roll. He oved to Coucil Bluffs, Iowa, i 1834 ad was there elected a tribal chief. I 1846 they \Jere oved to Idiaola,, the site of preset day Noh Topeka. Ad i 1847 or 1848 Vieux received his allotet of reservatio lad, which was located o the Orego trail, just east of where it crossed the Verillio river. He built a log cabi o~ his allotet, ad the costructed a toll bridge over the Verillio ear the spot where eigrats ad travelers had forded the river for ay years. The Verillio was the third ajor crossig faced by the eigrats, after the Wakarusa ad the. Vieux charged $1. for each outfit that crossed his bridge, soeties akig $3. a day. He also sold hay ad grai to the travelers, ad soe accouts etio that he had a blacksith shop for wago repairs ad also ra a geeral store. The Vieux crossig was a popular restig place for users of both the Orego trail ad the Fo Leavewoh to Fo Riley road sice it had good water, good wood ad good grass. (The Orego trail after crossig the Verillio ra west for oe ile ad the agled ohwesti at that poit the Fo-to-Fo road separated ad cotiued westerly.) There was a stage stable located o the Vieux far where horses were chaged for the stage lie ruig o the Fo-to-Fo road. At least oe tragedy is kow to have occurred at the Verillio crossigi i May, 1849, approxiately 5 people fro a large outfit died there of Asiatic cholera ad were buried o the east bak of the Verillio. A stoe was placed at the head of each grave with the ae ad date of burial. Louis Vieux was a ipoat a to his tribe, servig as busiess aget, iterpreter ad chief. He ade a uber of trips to Washigto i behalf of the Pottawatoies. He owed uch lad ad becae very wealthy. At oe tie he owed the site of the tow of Louisville, which was aed i his hoor. Louis Vieux died o May 6, 1872, ad is buried, with two of his wives ad several of his childre, i what is kow as the Louis Vieux ceetery. It is located several hudred yards east of the ford ad a sho distace oh of where his old cabi stood. <;'1

The Louis vieux Ceetery is located o a hill several hudred yards east of the Verillio ad just oh of where Vieux had his cabi, blacksith shop ad stable. The ceetery is ow feced off fro the surroudig pasture ad is accessible to visitors by eas of a turout fro a east-west rural road about 1 yards to the south. Towerig over 3 grave stoes i the eclosure is the ouet for Louis vieux. May of the arkers, icludig Louis Vieux's, have bee broke ad otherwise d~aged over the years by weather, graig cattle ad vadals. Vieux's arker has bee repaired but a uber of the stoes which have broke ito several pieces are lyig flat. The road south of the ceetery cotiues west to a old iro bridge, ow declared usafe ad closed to traffic. The site of the toll bridge erected by Louis Vieux is believed to be at that sae spot. The Verillio crossig (or Vieux crossig) of the Orego trail is 3 to 4 yards upstrea fro the bridge. At that spot the river bed is solid rock. (Crossigs could still be ade there if the creek baks were ot so steep.) The river is probably wider ad its baks are i all likelihood uch steeper ow tha i,louis Vieux's tie. May large trees lie both baks of the river.. Lookig to the east, back up o the.hill, fro the area of that crossig oe ca see o the hil~side a depressed area which ight have bee ade by wagos approachig the crossig area. A sho distace oh of the crossig, o the east bak ad just east of a old lae road, is the cholera victis' ceetery. Oly three stoes reai to ark the area ad oly oe has a leged, which reads T. S. The proposed Oaga da ad lake, which the Corps of Egieers plas to costruct, will fuher alter the area. The da will be built a ile or ore upstrea fro the area of the oiatio, but the Corps has stated its itetios of acquirig the area surroudig the crossig a?d ceetery for.recreatioal/historical developet.
