5 Chapter 1 The Oregon Territory was settled in Soon, settlers began pushing their way north of the Colubia River. The new settleent was called the Colubia Territory. All of its laws and governent were under the law the Oregon Territory. As the area began to grow in nuber, the settlers there began deanding a separation fro Oregon. A federal bill was introduced on February 8, 1853, to separate the Colubia Territory fro the Oregon Territory. Richard H. Stanton, the representative fro Kentucky, aended the bill that was presented to the legislature. He changed the nae of the territory fro Colubia to Washington Territory, in honor of our first president, George Washington. On March 2, 1853, President Fillore signed the act that would establish the new Washington Territory. The President sent Isaac Stevens to be the new governor of the area. Washington Territory also included the present state of Idaho and parts of Montana and Wyoing. The territory becae a state on February 22, 1889 (Washington s birthday). It was signed into statehood by President Grover Cleveland and is the only state naed after a president. W as hin Terr gton itory Colubia River Oregon

7 Chapter 1 The Sierra Nevada range produced soe of the finest tiber in the nation. But it was hard (and expensive) to transport the luber overland by horse teas. The Gold Rush years brought on a huge deand for luber. The sall ining caps in the ountains could get luber fro the Sierras, but growing cities like n Francisco and craento could get luber cheaper fro Oregon or even Washington Territory! Why? Because those luber caps were near water, and the Sierra logging caps were not. Later on, logging caps in the southern Sierras got inventive and built water-filled, V-shaped flues soeties 60 iles long to transport the tiber fro the ountains into the valley. Once the tiber was cut, teas of oxen, soeties as any as six to a cart, were used to carry it to the ill. They would have to cover difficult and dangerous terrain that was steep and rocky. Soeties the logs were floated down river to the sawill, which was located on the banks for easy access to the logs. wills were dirty, noisy, unsafe places. They were usually built up in the ost ountainous areas and if possible near rivers. Being near the water allowed for the tiber to be cut down and hauled to the ill uch quicker. The Sugar Pine Cap s sawill used a flue to transport the cut luber 60 iles to Madera, CA, in the valley. Later, the railroads were built up to the sawills to help with transporting the tiber. Most sawill caps were like a sall village. They housed the loggers and sawyers who worked there. There was a cookhouse and a recreational building as well.
