Sice the ames of the officer positios are amed i the Costitutio, the group cosidered puttig the ames of most of the positios i the bylaws. However, uder preset rules, the bylaws are ameded by the same process as the Costitutio. Thus the Futures Group is cosiderig chagig the pro c e d u re to amed the bylaws. This would ecessitate movig some paragraphs of the bylaws to the Costitutio. Fiacial Maagemet The Club s edowmet fud was dow somewhat as a result of the decliig stock market (to $2.8 millio), but Tre a s u re r Gerhard Saliger said this was ot cause for cocer. The Coucil approved opeig a sub-accout at Legg Maso that will be ivested oly i short-term fixed-icome securities, moey market fuds, ad other fuds with similar goals. This will be used for the restricted accouts ad for expeditures from the edowmet fud durig the ext two years. PATC received about $17,000 i cotributios through last year s Combied Federal Campaig, which represeted a $7,000 icrease over the previous year. 3 Walt s Notes Voluteerism i Actio I April I atteded the dedicatio of the ew Ed Garvey Memorial Shelter located alog the AT i Marylad. I hope that may of you will have a opportuity i the future to atted oe of our may dedicatios of cabis, shelters, or trails. There will be more dedicatios this year. Please watch the forecast ad see if you ca atted to let the voluteers kow that their work is appreciated. As I reflected o the may people who cotributed to the completio of the beautiful Garvey Memorial facilities, I was remided of so may other evets ad cotributios made by may hudreds of PATC voluteers. These efforts occur day ad eveig, seve days a week, i may locatios from the sales, iformatio, or cabis desks i Viea to the distat moutais i the middle of Virgiia as well as those orth ear the capital of Pesylvaia. Ad may of these voluteers are very busy people. Most are ot retired as I am with childre goe from the est. Recetly I received a letter from Skip Ebert, a very busy PATC er who also voluteers to help out the Boy Scouts ad others while beig the District Attorey of Cumberlad Couty i Pesylvaia. He voluteered to help PATC s legal effort i securig title ad easemets to lad for the Tuscarora Trail. Not oly voluteerig his ow time, he recruited the pro boo assistace of three other attoreys i that part of Pesylvaia, through a ad i the local bar associatio ewsletter. Ad there are may more examples. You may have oticed that the officers ad chairs o page two have chaged sice I last metioed the subject i the Jauary issue. Charles Sloa has voluteered to be our Geeral Cousel. We are most grateful for his expertise gaied i his law firm of Sloa ad Swedish, located here i Viea, as well as from his log associatio with the Appalachia Trail Coferece. Chuck is c u rretly Chair of AT C s Lad Tru s t Committee. Kare Brow has voluteered to use her experiece gaied i leadig hikes to help Tom Johso co-chair the Hikes Committee. All five chapters have voluteers who also serve o this committee that promotes hike leader traiig, evets, as well as excursios outside our area. Larry Rockwell has voluteered to be the Public Affairs Chair, utilizig expert i s e Potomac Appalachia gaied while workig for the America Red Cross ad elsewhere. Larry is active i hikig, backpackig, ad as a advocate of Leave No Trace. There are may other voluteers who have joied the effort to maitai ad protect trails i our area. I wish that I could list them all. Please ote them as their ames are published i the PA, ad please come to the ext aual meetig whe we read the ames of those receivig awards. Voluteerism i Need I metioed eightee moths ago the cotiuig eed for trail overseers, as evideced by the Trail Overseers Wated list (o the back page of each PA). I am still puzzled as to why we are ot istead maitaiig a Trail Overseer Waitig List! I woder if some may be somewhat itimidated at the prospect of beig a overseer or co-overseer? I must say that I did t kow the first thig about beig a overseer whe I took over Sead Farm Loop Trail. However, it was a short trail ad with the guidace furished verbally ad i writig it was but a short while before I felt comfortable with what I was doig. I quickly became adapted to the beefits of the chage from my employmet i a office as well as the fu of havig my ow little piece of real estate i the moutais where I could ejoy the chage i the seasos. Because it made a lot of sese to me some years ago, I am goig to quote Kerry Sow s remarks cocerig expectatios of a trail overseer: the average PATC overseer is resposible for about oe to two miles of trail. The basic resposibilities of a overseer are: 1) clippig ad weedig, 2) treadway maiteace, ad 3) blazig, as eeded. I additio to summer uderbrush, the overseer is usually expected to clear the trails of ay small trees or limbs that have blocked the path. Treadway maiteace usually ivolves istallig ad maitaiig erosio cotrol devices (water bars ad checkdams). A typical year for a PATC overseer begis i late witer with a ispectio hike, which gives the maitaier a chace to check up o ay witer damage ad to clear ay small trees that have falle. I early sprig, the overseer returs with a pick ad fire rake to clear the accumulated silt from the upper side of waterbars. By late sprig, a average trail will eed a iitial weedig, ad the coscietious overseer will clip wood vegetatio back that might be protrudig ito the path. Depedig o the trail, the overseer will probably retur aother time or two to cut back udergrowth durig the summer moths. Fall is a good time for a secod waterbar trip, ad the cool weather is usually perfect for blazig touch-ups. I ecourage you to check out the back page of this issue ad give a district maager a call. You may wish to ask a district maager to show you what is ivolved. If you do ot see a trail or area i the PA that iterests you the please call Heidi Forrest at Headquarters ad ask about other trails. Our Employees Voluteers are busy all over our four states. Meawhile, back i Viea, we have five dedicated employees who provide the stability that eables the voluteer system to work. May of us miss the smilig face of oe of our employees, Regia Garett, our former Busiess Maager, who left PATC after may years for career growth i aother orgaizatio. At this writig, we are still i the process of selectig Regia s replacemet from amog some very fie cadidates. We are fortuate that there are may people who wish to work for the Club, ad help us keep voluteerism i actio. See you o the trail, Dogwood, from page participats completed the etire Dogwood route, the first two crossig the fiish lie at 12:18 p.m. ad the fial two hikers at 7:09 p.m. Each fiisher received a well-deserved roud of applause, a fiisher patch ad a bowl of the traditioal Dogwood chili. Dogwood 2001 was made possible by the ethusiastic efforts of more tha 70 voluteers, icludig trail clearig crews, cooks ad base camp workers, registrars, fiish lie ad checkpoit officials, trail juctio moitors, sweep teams, emergecy medical techicias ad ham radio operators. May of the hikers commeted o the friedliess, dedicatio ad cheerful ature of the Dogwood voluteers, whose dedicatio of time ad eergy bear witess to a logstadig PATC traditio. o Ric Fracke Dogwood Half Hudred Director 3

Impressios of a First-Time Dogwood Voluteer Q : What do a gruelig 30-mile day hike of ot a sigle step, cartos full of baaas, a computer database, ad a group of woderful people have i commo? A: All that ad much, much more was the 2001 PATC Dogwood Half Hudred for me! This was my first year of voluteerig at the aual PATC Dogwood Half Hudred evet. I have bee aware of the Dogwood for may years but I ever felt suitably i shape to cover 30 miles of moutai trails i oe day. I did t thik the Dogwood was somethig I would ejoy. Was I ever wrog! It bega iocuously eough. A phoe call came from Ric Fracke, askig if I had ay iterest i helpig him by keepig a computerized registratio list of people who will be eterig the Dogwood this year. That should be easy, I thought... I am a fair typist ad I have a lot of experiece settig up databases sure, I ca hadle that. Oe database ad 251 paper etry forms later (most with legible hadwritig, thak goodess), I wodered if my work was over. Well, you could help out by doig the o-site registratio check-i at the evet... This got my attetio. That might be fu. It certaily was a ecessary task that someoe had to do. I d bee cooped up much of the witer ad would ejoy a sprig weeked foray to the woods. I agreed. As the evet eared, I was lookig forward to the experiece, but hoestly, I did t thik much about it. About a week before the evet, I had the idea to search for PATC Dogwood o the Web. Aha, here are some o-lie photo albums from participats i past years! A few clicks ad... uh, oh, what i the world am I gettig myself ito? Look at that huge crowd of hikers; there must be a MILLION of them! I had a sikig feelig ot ulike the Titaic. I was t sure I could hadle the job. Istead, whe I arrived at Dogwood Base Camp o a gorgeous Friday afteroo, the day before the evet, my spirits were buoyed. This is a icredibly well-orgaized operatio! A huge picic pavilio i the woods, loaded with breakfast ad dier fixigs, case after case after case of bottled water, eough boxes of baaas to keep a bad of chimps happy for a year, radio ateas erected, a search ad rescue lea-to built what a amazemet to have all bee accomplished by voluteers. We all kept busy throughout the eveig, preparig for the evet, but fidig time to tell ad liste to fuy stories, laugh a lot, ad fially get some dier ad rest. Saturday morig came quickly. I will spare you the pre-daw details of flippig through forms, hadig out etry umbers, safety pis, Dogwood patches, ad makig edless umbers of check marks. The Vatage From Checkpoit Three Chill-skied ad patig moutai ruers grab baaa halves ad palmfuls of goldfish lettig with while they us fill their water bottles Gatorade ad water mixed breathe ad gasp ad wice before lopig away to cover the last eleve poit four miles. The Dogwood Half Hudred: A evet whose ruers use marathos as traiig sessios. Aimee Kratts Three of us with thirty figers flyig at the Official Registratios Picic Table got everyoe processed i what seemed like a flash. Before I kew it, the big group of etrats had bee give their lastmiute briefig ad had vaished dow the trail. The ejoymet cotiued for me for the etire day. A lot of work remaied for the voluteers to accomplish, much of it takig place t h roughout the log Dogwood circuit, which I could sadly oly experiece secod-had via radio trasmissios. I wished I could have bee every w h e re hadig out water at checkpoit 2, checkig off hiker umber 173 as he passed checkpoit 3, directig folks at cofusig trail itersectios, ecouragig the weary past checkpoit 4. Well, at least I could do my part back at Base Camp. I felt privileged to be a part of such a group of dedicated, eff i c i e t, cooperative, friedly people. 4 Early i the eveig, as the last course-coquerig participat crossed the fiish lie amidst the aroma of vats of simmerig chili, the etire experiece came together. I may ot have hiked a step, but I had participated i the Dogwood! I was so grateful to all the exhausted mud-spattered soggy heroes ad heroies who visited oeby-oe to persoally thak all of the voluteers for makig the evet possible. I was smilig so hard I thought my face would stick that way. I would ot have missed it for the world. o Jim Tomli Potomac Appalachia

Impressios of a First-Time Dogwood Voluteer Iwas the last of the voluteers to arrive at checkpoit 3 ad that was at 8:30 i the m o rig. Judy Smoot, the presidet of PAT C s West Vi rgiia Chapter, was i charge. There were five of us: Judy, me, Sharo, Doa ad Sue. Our tasks were to cut up baaas, orages ad apples, put Oreos, Chips Ahoy ad Goldfish crackers o plates ad mix gallo after gallo of lemo-lime ad orage Gatorade. We set this bouty of fruit, sugar ad liquids out o two picic tables as we watched the racers ruig by our checkpoit to get to checkpoit 2 first. May of the ruers were really disappoited that they were ot allowed to stop ad sit at our checkpoit. They had already ru 11 miles sice 6:30 a.m. Goig aother few teths to checkpoit 2 seemed like tormet to some. Alog with our duties of makig sure that the ruers were fed ad watered, we had to keep track of them. Oe voluteer maaged the Check-I clipboard. Whe a ruer arrived, the voluteer was supposed to ote the ruer s umber ad arrival time. I took the Check-Out clipboard i order to ote a ruer s umber ad departure time, ad to ote drop-outs. This bookkeepig may seem overly admiistrative, but it s was very importat to keep track of all the ruers locatios to make sure o oe was uaccouted for hurt or lost o a trail. The weather i the morig o April 21 seemed to be perfect for voluteerig. It was 65 degrees ad overcast. We were very comfortable at checkpoit 3, if you did t cout the gats. The ruers, however, may have had a differet opiio. Afew weeks ago I took a ice walk i the moutais. That s a big deal for me. With youg kids i baseball ad soccer, a 4- hour drive to the hills is a rare treat. Ayway, my walk i the woods. I was really lookig forw a rd to my commue with ature; o kids, a ice sprig day, (hopefully) lots of birds, butterflys, flowers ad other ew growth. I got a early start ad was careful about preparatios. I had my route all mapped out ad o other commitmets to iterfere with my day s sojour. The weather was promisig, ad I was eager for a ice log stroll. Well, almost. First place co-fiishers, Derick Carr ad Scott Mills, lookig like they have just take a afteroo stroll. The first ruers through checkpoit 3, 19.1 miles ito the race, were umbers 24 ad 39. They arrived at 10:09 a.m. Clearly iterested i wiig, they spet less tha a miute at the checkpoit re-supplyig with water ad Gatorade, the takig off at a fast pace up the hill. The third ruer came i a few miutes later ad spet very little time with us as well. These three leaders were already a half-hour ahead of everyoe else. (For the sake of statistics, the first woma arrived at the checkpoit at 11:25 a.m.) Impressios of a First-Time Dogwood Participat For some reaso, I guess a mid-life thig, I decided to eter this year s Dogwood Half Hudred. (Actually, I was prompted by my best fried, who ditched me early i the evet.) I thought it would be a ice sprig toic of sorts; a good motivator to shed some pouds ad get i better shape. Hey I ve doe some hikig. I ve walked more tha 20 miles i a day with a full backpack. How hard could this be? We siged up ad I started traiig for the evet. Sometime after oo it started to rai. Ad the bulk of the ruers bega to arrive. They were wet, cold, dehydrated ad had some blisters to tell tales about. The medical voluteers wet ito actio. Shoes were utied. Socks were peeled off. Ad abused feet were exposed. There was much discussio of blister care (to drai or ot to drai, that is the questio). Small cuts ad abrasios were cleaed. There was eve a space blaket or two urolled to cover shiverig participats who d decided that 19.1 miles was quite eough to hike i oe day thakyou-very-much. The medical voluteers were amazig. They kew whe it was time to questio a ruer hard about the wisdom of cotiuig ad whe it was time to patch someoe up as quickly as possible to let them go o. Oe of the medical staff eve voluteered to stad at the roadside for a couple of hours i the rai just to make sure that that the race participats got across the road safely, because after 19 miles, some ruers were a bit dazed. The ruers themselves re p o rted some sow still remaiig o the ridges ad periods of light rai. They also declared i great umbers that avigatig the rocks alog the trails was quite a challege. The quote I heard most was, God, my feet are killig me. How log to the ext checkpoit? The fuy thig about the ruers was that despite all the rai ad physical pai ad competitio, everyoe was i a great mood. Sometimes the ruers were icredibly wry about the whole situatio. As part of my job I had to ask over 200 people, Checkig out ad goig o to checkpoit 4? The best aswer was, Yeah, I m goig o to checkpoit 4. I do t kow why I m goig to checkpoit 4, but yeah, I m goig there. Probably, the most hoest guy i the race. o Aimee Kratts I like a good challege, ad I figured, with some serious traiig I could do it. So about seve weeks before the the Dogwood I started hittig the treadmill every other day. My short days were seve miles of walk/ruig. O off days I did weights. I got myself a ew pair of facy seaks ad set about to lose some weight. I worked hard ad fairly quickly saw results. But seve weeks is ot a lot of time whe you ve ot bee i great shape for a while. Ad I really did t wat to get ijured. So, o the day of the evet, I d doe all I could. I was excited ad ervous. It was very reassurig to see other participats who looked more like me tha like ultra- See Participat, page 6 Potomac Appalachia 5

Impressios of a First-Time Dogwood Participat Participat, from page 5 maratho athletes. A few fellow PAT C members who kew the route had told me that I could make it if I just kept a steady pace. Although it s ot classified as a race, for those of us who do t trai for marathos or extreme sports, this was a race agaist the clock. You see, there are cut-off times, so if you do t go fast eough you get the boot. My best fried was certai we d have o trouble keepig the approximately 3 mph pace throughout, ad for isurace, we d ru as much of the first 10 miles as we could. I was determied to fiish. The first sectio was like rush hour. It was sigle-file most of the way, with 250 hikers o a 3-foot-wide trail. Passig was oly achieved with very careful plaig, ad some degree of offese. Cuttig ahead three or four people oly etted about 15 feet. Not worth it. But the pace was good, except for the occasioal emergecy brakig. Ufortuately, the pace was ot as swift as we had hoped, ad we came ito the first checkpoit with oly 10 miutes to spare. Not a good sig. Who wats to prepare all that time, work that hard, to get disqualified because you walk too slow? I was t happy, but my fried paicked. We had ru virtually oe of the first five miles mostly because it was too crowded, but also because it was a miefield of rocks! I was t expectig a paved path but at least some relatively flat soil. Wishful thikig! So the ext sectio was our opportuity to gai time. We ra everythig we could. The crowd was a little thier ad we started to feel better about our chaces of fiishig. We were still relatively fresh ad ruig was t too bad, except for the rocks. The first time I fell I was lucky eough to lad i mud, but the secod time was all rock. I realized that after walkig for more tha 10 miles, ruig dowhill i rocks was a bad idea which could prevet me from fiishig. At the secod checkpoit we had gaied about 30 miutes ad my paicked fried left me. I still felt relatively fresh ad thought I could make it if I kept a steady pace ad did t stop. Eve though I had just started to feel a couple of hotspots I was t cocered eough to rest at this checkpoit, eve to eat/drik/chage socks. Makig up that time was just too hard to do. 6 The ext sectio was log ad hard. Ad eve though I had ot fiished eve oe bottle of water i either of the two previous sectios, I drak both bottles before I was half way through the third sectio. There was a moster hill, ad I ve always bee part i c u l a r- ly weak o uphills. Ad i this sectio it became quite clear that I had two blisters. A re f reshig sprikle started o the way up the hill, but at the top it tured ito a cold, widy dre c h e r. A short while later I experieced some strage leg cramps ad dizziess. Although I had tried to stay hydrated I was ot careful eough early o. I ll kow better ext time. I was so thakful to ru ito a woderful voluteer at the ed of the ridge who was givig out water. What timig! The fial three or so miles of that sectio felt like five, ad arrivig at the checkpoit, 19 miles ito the Dogwood, was a great relief. Before I started the race I had decided that if I was able to make the cutoff times through this checkpoit, I would be sure to make it barrig ijury. But I realized durig the evet that if I made it to checkpoit 3, I could stop the walk ad still feel really good about what I had accomplished. At checkpoit 3 my priority was blister tre a t- met, to make the last 12 miles bearable. So I put my achig feet ito the hads of a ICU RN with a syrige. It was t the most pleasat m e m o ry of the trip, but I sure am grateful for her help. She cheered me up (said my chief complait was crabbiess) ad gave me eough aide ad rest to cotiue o. The ext hill was with the assistace of a fellow hiker, who set a swift ad sure pace up the climb. I was doig a bit of huffig, but by matchig his stride I made it up i fairly good time. I m glad I did t kow what was ahead because I was tired. A umber of rock slides preseted the ext challege. I kept thikig how much my kids would like that part of the course. But my legs were bruised ad achig, ad it was hot. Fuy how just a couple hours earlier I was cold ad wet. Ufortuately, it was also rocky, ad the goig was tricky. I came across a voluteer who was guidig us oto the right path (agai). He had bee out there all day, probably 10 hours at this poit. Without his help I d probably would have eded up i West Virgiia. Ayway, he said it was aother four or five miles to the ext checkpoit. I was disappoited, but checked my watch ad realized that uless I twisted a akle or got ijured i some other way, I was probably goig to make it. I had slowed dow a bit over the course of the day, ad kew I eeded to keep up the pace. But after 23 or so miles, it s just hard to walk swiftly. Well, really, it s just hard to walk. Whe I was about two miles (so I thought) from the checkpoit, at the top of a steep dowhill, I came across a sig sayig it was 4.6 miles to Elizabeth Furace. I thought that was the locatio of checkpoit 4. I had less tha a hour ad a half before the cutoff, o way I could make it almost five miles. I threw cautio to the wid ad started ruig dowhill with everythig I had left i me. I ca t believe I did t break a leg or akle. I made the ext mile fairly quickly, ad came back up o the ma who had paced me up the big climb out of checkpoit 3. He remarked o how much time I d made up, I guess he kew about how far behid him I d falle, ad said it was oly about aother mile to the checkpoit. What a relief! Ca you imagie makig it that far oly to be disqualified? But i reality, we had a couple of miles. No matter. The cheerleadig squad who met us at checkpoit 4 was fatastic. I opted for a rest ad food before leavig, o loger worr i e d about whether I was goig to make it. It was oly a few more miles, through a few streams, ad chili was waitig! I fiished the walk exactly 12 hours after startig. I walked the whole time fairly hard, ad eve did some ruig. I came through with o serious ijuries ad felt O.K. at the ed. Ad I met some great people i the process. All-i-all it was a great experiece. My fried ad I were sore startig about five miutes after the evet, ad it took four days to be able to walk dow my stairs facig forward. Ruig shoes were out of the questio for over a week. I have ever laughed as hard as I did o the day after the Dogwood whe my fried ad I tried to get out of the retal car ad climb a 6-ich curb. I wated a challege ad I got oe. I ca t say eough for all the voluteers who made this evet ot oly possible, but a well-coordiated affair. They got up every bit as early as the participats, sweated at least as much, ad were out there all day. What a woderful buch of people. I m ot aloe i sayig that I m icredibly grateful. So I took a walk i the woods re c e t l y. I did t see much flora ad faua, mostly geology, but it was a good time. This evet will be a sprig ritual for me for years to come. Ad for those of you who did t quite make it, d o t give up. There s always ext year. o Lida Shao-Beaver Potomac Appalachia

Youg Hikers, from page 1 to wear a pack of at least 10% of his body weight for 50 miles. His was actually closer to 20%, but he still thought it too light. (Do t we all do that?) He s a little guy, but all heart. We got a late start ad had to really high-tail it to make our first ight s destiatio. I had the lucky desigatio of takig the first fall, but he quickly caught up ad surpassed me gradly. He thought it was fuy though, thus begiig the FOYB (fall o your butt) Club. We kept score thereafter, ad he reached 32 poits. I m ot sure if he was beig careless or masochistically competitive. He did wi. There were so may stories from that trip we ll tell for years, like the sog he wrote called: Delicious horse pies, they are so good. Rya discovered his primord i a l hutig istict ad wet seekig shelter mice via flashlight. There were some tough times too, whe dad was pushig the little guy a bit more tha he could tolerate, but the promise of a cold Moutai Dew at the ed of the trail, ad the costat adveture aroud every tur kept his spirits up ad made for a good time for all. Perfect weather ad a fairly easy terrai were welcome details for this trip. Later i the summer we squeezed i a slightly shorter circuit aroud Peddlar Dam, which was mostly memorable for the extreme amout of water that fell o us for most of the trip. But it was eough for the Presidetial patch, which he sewed o his customized backpack proudly. I hope he wears that patch o our thru hike oe day. 8 Rya ad Mike Beaver, spedig some quality time together. These trips took a little more plaig tha most. We were t sure about some thigs, but stayed ope-mided to chage. Some thigs we leared about backpackig with your youg oes: o Push a little, but be very coscious of your childre s limits. We plaed a circuit which could be modified if it was too log or too short. We let our so set the pace. We did 6-10 mile days, with moderate elevatio chage. Ad we took plety of rest stops. I do t thik oce a hour, for 5 or 10 miutes, is too frequet. o I ca t imagie ayplace ot full of adveture for a child, but we itetioally looked Here Comes the Next Geeratio I have bee hikig alog the AT sice the ripe age of two. I wat to pass o my passio for the outdoors to my iece, Emma, who is 1-1/2 ow. I told my sister ad brother-i-law that I wat to take them campig for the weeked this summer. As my brother-i-law was explaiig that he will ot go campig uless there is a place he ca plug i his lap top, tur o the TV ad watch HBO ad have a heated bathroom, my iece walked out of my room with my trekkig poles. It s a sig my sister laughigly said. She s goig to be a tree hugger just like her Aut Cherie. Cherie Huter for hikes ivolvig lots of poits of iterest, especially stream crossigs ad rocks. o Make sure their water bottle is somewhere they ca reach it easily. o Comfortable shoes are a must. Do t buy ew shoes just before a trip. Make sure they have bee broke i ad fit well. Do t eglect socks either. Make sure they fit, ad will offer all the comforts that yours do. o We modified a school backpack for Rya. It worked great. Lots of paddig made it comfortable. We checked out child-sized backpacks but they were for the most part too large for the load he was to carry: his clothes, ad some food. Basically, light large stuff. Ad his pack still was t full. o A little bribery ca be a good thig whe the goig gets tough. Our choice is jawbreakers ad mits. o Cotests ad sogs are a great distractor. We came up with a couple of really fu cotests which were time-cosumig. But, a c t u a l l y, most of the etertaimet was thought up ad provided by Rya. o This is a good chace to educate. Teach your childre safety first, but do t forget trail etiquette, ad all about ature. o Make sure it s fu. These are our future keepers of the woods. Do t eglect to teach them to love the outdoors as you do. I thik Rya will forever remember with joy our first backpackig trip. He (ad we) leared a lot, ad had a great time. Ad, I thik he was just old eough to complete a trip he could be proud of. I kow his mom was sure proud of his walk i the woods. o Lida Shao-Beaver Potomac Appalachia

The Ladybugs Visit our Cabis Ladybug, Ladybug, fly away home. Your house is o fire ad your childre are goe. (Ad please leave our cabis aloe.) Achildre s ursery rhyme may ot come to mid whe dealig with the oslaught of the Asia lady bird beetle, a.k.a. Hallowee lady beetle, Japaese lady beetle, ad Asia ladybug. The little buggers swarm ito hidig places i the witer to hiberate. If they ca t fid a place to hiberate, they ll collect i vast umbers ad, as a lot of our cabi users are aware ad write about i logbooks ad coditio reports, they ifest our cabis. Reports idicate that beetles clusterig o the sides of buildigs usually leave volutarily i a few days or weeks. I the sprig, they ll swarm agai to get outside to look for willig mates. Oce back outside, they will the disperse to chomp dow o their favorite food aphids (as i the wooly adelgids that ifest ad kill our hemlock forests). Some sources idicate that they have picky appetites ad prefer to much o wooly adelgids over other types of aphids. This is a good thig. Iitially they were itroduced i 1979 to combat the proliferatio of tree-ihabitig aphids i Louisiaa. By about 1994, the Asia ladybug had spread throughout the easter part of the Uited States. Our ative ladybugs have atural predators like birds, ad they will die out over the witer. The Asia ladybug, however, does ot die out i the witer, has a life cycle of three years, ad procreates abudatly. There is o kow p redator sice they are brightly colore d (which most aimals kow is a good idicatio that they re toxic or do t taste real good), ad they give off a offesive smell (to you, me, ad the birds) associated with a s e c retio emitted whe they re agitated. This secretio, a aggregatio pheromoe, attracts other Asia ladybugs by the thousads to a favorable shelter for the witer. That s why you see so may i oe place. Accordig to a iformatio sheet distributed by the Departmet of Etomology at the Uiversity of Marylad, College Park, prepared by Joh A. Davidso, the followig poits should be cosidered. They do t hurt people. They do t bite or stig (although some have said they have bee bitte). They overwiter as adults. Adult beetles look for a sheltered place to overw i t e r. Oce such a place is foud, the beetles give off a chemical scet, which attracts other beetles which is why sometimes thousads of beetles will be foud i the same place. Biology Eggs are laid i the sprig. Larvae develop ito adults i about oe moth. Old ad ew adults will look for the overwiterig site i October. It has bee reported that adults may live up to three years. Where did they come from? Most species are ative to this area. Some others have bee itroduced as biological cotrol agets over the past 100 years. Where are they ow? From Maie to Louisiaa. What do I do? DON T SPRAY THEM!!! Sweep or vacuum them up put them outside i the woods, leaf pile or brush pile to overwiter. Hidig places ca be costructed with boards, cardboard or brush ad leaves. Repair tor screes or caulk the cracks through which they eter the house. Sice these beetles are attracted to lights, caulk aroud widows, pull shades, ad keep outdoor lights off where possible. Istall screes o attic ad basemet vets. forests alog the Appalachia Trail i the battle of survival agaist the wooly adelgid ad the itroductio of the Asia ladybug to combat them. It s a slow goig process, but a promisig success story. You have to ask yourself this for a little icoveiece puttig up with these little creatures, is t it ice to kow that they may be the sole reaso our hemlock forests will survive the wooly adelgid? Also keep i mid that after the populatio of aphids reduces, so will the populatio of the Asia ladybugs. There is t much the overseers of our cabis ca do about ladybugs other tha take the measures listed above. But you as reters ca help out by just brushig or scoopig them outside. We certaily wo t be usig chemical isecticides to eradicate them, but we will be keepig our eyes out for some product that may be used as a repellet. Please be cosiderate of others usig the cabis who may be sesitive to isecticides. It is true that some victims will display a rash of this descriptio. However, it is equally if ot more commo that the expadig rash will be a solid, uiform red color. It is also quite possible, as i Mr. Needham s case, that a victim will have o rash whatsoever. The rash frequetly accompaies fever, chills, letharg y, stiff eck, swolle lymph glads, ad other costitutioal symptoms. For ayoe who speds time outdoors, eve oly i your backyard, ay severe summer flu, especially with a mysterious rash, must be treated immediately. The article should have also oted that the secod ad third stages of a utreated Lyme ifectio ca be accompaied by strikig eurological ad arthritic symptoms, icludig extremely swolle joits ad/or paralysis, especially of the face ad extremities. The loger-term symptoms do ot always disappear as the article suggests. The diagosis ad treatmet of Lyme disease is poorly uderstood ad extremely cotroversial. There are dramatic differeces of opiio withi the medical commuity. Research is uderway to attempt to develop a better diagostic test ad to determie the best regime of atibiotic treatmets. The curret diagostic test, the results of which are frequetly icorrect, ca oly idetify those idividuals who have i their lifetimes bee exposed to the Lyme disease bacteria. It is ot possible, as Mr. Needham states, to determie aythig about the stage of the disease usig this test. Sadly, there is o test that will prove that a patiet is cured. Oe result of this ucertaity is that the 30 days of atibiotics that the article states as the ecessary treatmet is oly a guess. Aother result is that a patiet exhibitig early sigs of Lyme disease should be treated immediately, regardless of the results of the curret Lyme diagostic test. The opportuity to arrest the ifectio i its early stage must ot be missed. The article does ot metio the Lyme disease vaccie, which is ow available. Ufortuately, cotroversy also exists about the vaccie. Some claim that they have had a severe arthritic reactio to the vaccie. It is ot kow how effective the vaccie is, ad if it is effective, how log oe is protected after receivig the vaccie. Oe must remai vigilat about cotractig Lyme disease eve after receivig the vaccie. Thak you, Mr. Needham, for the iformative ad well-timed article. The educated awareess of the public, a ope-mided medical professio, ad cotiuig scietific research are our best weapos agaist this disease. James F. Tomli I Respose: The mai poit of the article was prophylactic. That is, use spray ad tuck i your pats. I thought I made it fairly clear that the Bull s Eye Rash was ot a good idicator ad that the symptoms were ebulous at best. As far as the diagosis, testig ad treatmet, I thik it pertiet to poit out the ucertaities of curret medical protocols. I reported what my doctor told me. I would commet that whe I spoke to aother doctor about the fact that I thought I had Lyme Disease, he asked whe I had bee i Coecticut, presumably as this was the oly place where oe could cotract it. I did ot metio the Lyme Disease vaccie itetioally as it is cotroversial at best ad possibly harmful at worst.o William Needham A Celebratio at Wago Wheel O Saturd a y, Jue 30th, the Nort h Chapter will dedicate the Wa g o Wheel shelter at the Coloel Deig State Park. 16 Most visitors to Sheadoah Natioal Park stop at sceic overlooks as they c ruise dow Skylie Drive. They pause, car egies still ruig. Peerig through their widows they see graceful foliage, the ru g g e d spies of the moutais leadig up to the ridgelie, the patters of fields ad farms i distat valleys devotig perhaps 30 secods to cotemplatig the paorama before guig the throttle ad headig off to the ext Sceic View marked o their map. T h e re s more though, to be see from these overlooks, ad it takes more tha 30 secods to see it. Geeratios of families, some datig back to the 1700s, lived i the valleys ad hollows of the rugged moutais that ow make up the Sheadoah Natioal Park. You ca see traces of their lives played out here, but it ivolves turig off your motor, haulig yourself out of your car, ad lacig up a pair of hikig boots. Jack Reeder, author (alog with his wife, Caroly) of Sheadoah Heritage: The S t o ry of the People Before the Park, Sheadoah S e c rets: The Story of the Park s Hidde Past, a d Sheadoah Vestiges: What the Moutai People Left Behid, recetly led a hike fro m Hogwallow Flats Overlook that traveled several miles dow the easter edge of the park ad back geeratios i time. C o t r a ry to what may visitors thik, what is ow the Sheadoah Natioal Park was ot, as opposed to most atioal parks i the west, a pristie wilderess; it was actually lad that was ihabited by hudreds of families. Cultivated f a rmlad, apple orc h a rds, bars, gristmills, sawmills, churches, schools, post offices, geeral stores, ad etworks of roads were to be foud here. Sevety-five years ago, Calvi Coolidge siged his ame to a bill establishig the park, sealig the fate of the moutai residets. There was to be o place for them i what would be oe of the first major Natioal Parks o the East Coast. Almost 500 families were moved fro m the moutais some left willigly, others w e re forcefully evicted. Their homes were b u red or tor dow. To d a y, you have to look h a rd to see traces of the huma history of the p a r k. Ad that s exactly what we were here to see. This was t a sceic hike, but oe that would take us step-by-step, back to what this area was like before there was a Sheadoah Natioal Park, ad before the Civilia Coserv a t i o Corps built Skylie Drive. After meetig at the Hogwallow Flats overlook, we set off, with Jack i the lead. Withi miutes, it was obvious that this was t actually goig to be a trail 16 Overlookig History: Hike Ito the Past of Skylie Drive Jack Reeder (ceter) SNP history hike. Cast iro vat i foregroud, left by moutai residets. hike, sice there was o trail to speak of. As accurately advertised i the PA F o recast, bushwhackig was defiitely ivolved dead tre e s, graspig vies, ad thors were costat obstacles as we desceded the ridge. Withi a few steps, our group leared the protocol of spacig ourselves so we did t get a good swat i the face by a brach sagged by the perso i frot of us. The first trace of huma presece that we e c o u t e red was a garled, overg row apple t ree, its bark freshly scarred by bear claws. This t ree was the loe survivor of a apple orc h a rd that was oce here. We soo bega to see the p a t t e rs of log abadoed dirt roads that serviced the orc h a rds ad provided passage to moutai homes. Jack described the apple i d u s t ry i the area, ad related how whe, durig World War II, so may me were i the m i l i t a ry that there were t eough workers to h a rvest the apple crop. PATC members pitched i to help, ad whe labor laws re q u i red that they be paid for their work, the PATC ers doated the moey to the PAT C t re a s u ry. As we desceded further towards Hogwallow Flats the hiss of the cars travelig alog Skylie Drive faded away completely. Soo, Jack led us to a immese cast iro cauldro, almost 4 feet i circ u m f e rece, lyig i the leaves. Cracked like the Liberty Bell, it still sat exactly where it had bee whe Jack photographed it for Sheadoah Ve s t i g e s (page 33) over 20 years ago. Guesses abouded as to what its purpose was; did it oce serve as a laudry tub? A vat for boilig apples, or scaldig hogs? (I thought it looked just like the kid of cauldro you d see i oe of those cartoos i which a missioary is about to be stewed by caibals, but I kept that particular theory to myself). Followig a log abadoed road, that at this poit, resembled little more tha a deer ru, we reached Hogwallow Flats. This muddy a rea, braided by rivulets of water, was ideed, as the ame implies, a ideal wallow for hogs to cool off i o hot days. As we paused for luch, sittig o a dowed tree, Jack told us about the h i s t o ry of Applesauce House, of which o trace could be foud today. It was a abadoed cabi adopted by the PATC trail voluteers i the late 1920s as a place to stay after workig o what was to become the Appalachia Tr a i l (this particular sectio of the AT was later re l o- cated to its curret locatio west of Skylie Drive). Accordig to Club literature from the 1950s, Applesauce House got its ame whe, durig a work trip, oe of the PATC voluteer cooks brought everythig that a hugry work c rew would eed, except for coffee (!), ad e v e ryoe had to make do with applesauce. Explorig Hogwallow Flats furt h e r, we discove red the magled carcass of a aciet Dodge, oe that Jack photographed i S h e a d o a h Ve s t i g e s (Page 40). There was t much left of it, although the rust perforated wiged feders w e re still i place ad the flathead six-cylider egie was still itact, as was oe re m a i i g wood-spoked wheel. That wheel looks pre t t y much just like it did whe I first saw it, said Jack, except that ow the rubber tire that was mouted o the wheel has fially weathere d a w a y. A bit more explorig, some additioal usuccessful searchig for the foudatios of Applesauce House, ad it was time to re t u r. We bega walkig back uphill, at oe poit c rossig traces of what had bee the old Appalachia Trail, circa All too soo, we could hear the cars o Skylie Drive agai, ad the there we were, back at the Hogwallow Flats Overlook. As we were removig our boots ad packig up our gear, several cars pulled i, coasted almost to a stop as the occupats quickly glaced aroud, ad with the b o red ochalace of someoe switchig chaels o a TV set, poited their automobiles back oto Skylie Drive. They would ever kow what they d missed uder that forest caopy that spread beeath the overlook, but o the other had, they had t eared it. o Joh Luck Potomac Appalachia

Witessig ature s trasitio fro m witer to sprig is always a ispirig evet. Those of us who are fortuate eough to sped some time o the trails durig this period share a reewal of life with the wildflowers ad sigig birds. For example, i late April I met a thru-hiker orth of US 522 ear the Coservatio ad Research Ceter east of Frot Royal. Whe asked how he ejoyed the AT through the SNP, he replied he was ejoyig this sectio through the valley with all the ew growth it was still dead i the Park. This sprig has t bee as wet as last year but by Jue you ca still expect the trailside vegetatio to begi to ecroach o the treadway. Early Jue, whe the weeds are still youg ad teder is the best time to begi the summer assault. Otherwise, the chore becomes icreasigly more difficult the loger you wait. From The Supervisor Of Trails The trails office at the PATC headquarters cotiues to wrestle with various computer ad database problems. Hopefully, by the time this issue of the PA is mailed, most of these problems will be resolved (figers crossed). I the meatime, please be patiet, ad keep those work reports comig i. Despite the database problems, all Sheadoah passes for SNP overseers were mailed i early April (the passes had bee delayed i the NPS office). If you have t received your pass, please cotact your District Maager or Heidi Forre s t. Similarly, all PATC overseers should have the ew Overseer Discout Cards (which were also mailed i April). Dedicatio for the ew Tuscarora Trail shelter built last year is scheduled for Jue 30. I geeral, the trails i the North are i good shape thaks to some very dedicated overseers. O a persoal ote, Charlie broke his akle i early February ad has had difficulty maitaiig his ormally vigorous schedule of trail work but he should be his regular demadig self by summer. Of course, the steady rai let up ad the su came out as soo as the crew arrived, ad soo both spirits ad glasses were lifted out o the backyard deck. Ad yes, the crew will retur to do battle o Mt. Marshall some other day... ad o, Walters wo t be tautig the Rai Gods aymore! Rehab, Rehab Tacklig some trail rehab projects, the Cadillac Crew maaged two work trips i April. The first trip saw the crew remedy a creepig tread problem o the AT i SNP N o rth District at Hogback Moutai. Ulike George, the Rai Gods were kid ad the crew ejoyed pleasat coditios with excellet views from the work site. There was a premium for suscree as the leaves had yet to deploy. The secod work trip was a rehab project o the Nort h e r Peaks Trail at Sugarloaf Moutai i Marylad. Trails o Sugarloaf Moutai just sort of happeed ad lack the ormal erosio cotrol devices.
