Description Condition excellent -X_good fair deteriorated ruins unexposed Check one unaltered X altered Check one X- original site moved date N/A Describe the present and original (if known) physical appearance The Shone-Charley House.erected in 1898 in the Queen Anne/Eastlake style, is notable for the high degree of integrity of its interior finish. Although the original exterior porch decoration has been lost, the majority of the original decorative treatment is intact. Oriented to the northeast, the house occupies Lot 1 of Block 58, Original Plat of the City of Medford, Jackson County, Oregon. The 50 x 100 foot lot is otherwise known as Tax Lot The one-story rectangular mass is topped by a steeply pitched hip roof from which gable ends appear on the north and south elevations, and extend into a gable projection on the east elevation. A lower, hipped kitchen wing and porch appears on the west elevation. Various horizontal and vertical wood panels sheath the balloon-frame structure. Various corner boards, panels, sawn boards, dentil projections, and other Eastlake-style ornament is still intact on the exterior. Originally, the textural effect was heightened by the use of color highlighting, ridge cresting, finials and an elaborately decorated porch which featured gfprojecting onion dome extension (lost in the 1920s). The house consists of a parlor, dining room, entry hall, two bedrooms, kitchen, pantry, utility room, bath and front and back porches. There are two front doors; one into the parlor and the other into the entry hall which leads past the front bedroom into the dining room and bypasses the parlor completely. The foundation is brick, latd over a cemented river rock footing and still supports the perimeter of the house. The well (original water supply) is under the back porch, hand-dug and bricked, but now filled with dirt within two feet of the top. The back porch is essentially original, but a portion was enclosed for a utility room. The only other basic exterior change was an addition to the original bathroom by a contractor, William Cooney, in The interior of the house consists of framed walls with wood lath.attached with square nails. Horse hair plaster is attached to the entire interior. Every room is at least partially wall papered - the kitchen and pantry have a wood wainscotting. Interior ceilings have been lowered to ten feet and returned to their original condition. The house has seven operable transom windows above the doors. Between the parlor and dining room is an extremely interesting archway, hand carved of red cedar with gold leaf designs and unusual glass insets. The arch is offset with similarly intricate matching red cedar woodwork (baseboard extending 10 inches up the wall and framing of each door). One of the two original chimneys (the one in the kitchen) is still visable but has been papered over. The two front doors have original doors and screens and most inside doors have original hardware. Maintenance and restoration of much of the interior was done in the early 1960s by Martin Burke and his wife, a local builder who has lived in Southern Oregon since 1928.

Efirmet (architect) Statement of Significance (in one paragraph) ] The Shone-Charley House, located at Street in Medford, Jackson County, Oregon, was constructed in the Queen Anne/Eastlake style for Joseph Shone in While locally significant for its association with the Shone and Charley families - both early South Oregon pioneers - the house can be primarily evaluated under Criterion "c" as a relatively intact example of the Queen Anne/Eastlake style in Medford which retains much of its original decorative elements and interior and exterior design features. The original owner, Joseph Shone, was born in England in Emigrating to New York in 1880, he arrived in Medford in 1895 by way of Denver and Socorro, New Mexico. By that time he was married and father of two children. Shone hired W. J. Bennet* to design the elaborate, multi-colored elevations. An historic photograph reveals the complexity of the design, which included a porch embellished with a multi-faceted, onion-domed bay. Roof cresting, finials, and a remarkable fence composed of pierced and jig sawn pieces complimented the elevations which were decorated with characteristic applied, sawn and pierced Eastlake ornament. With the exception of the cresting, fence and front porch, most of this decoration is intact. Curiously, the Shones attached the letters "Waverly Cottage" to the front of the house. Vigorous research has failed to attribute the name to the Shones or to shed light on its meaning. It has been suggested, however, that the name relates to the Waverly novels of Sir Walter Scott. The Shones sold the house in 1901 to William and Andromeda Charley and moved to South Bend, Washington. The house was to remain in the Charley family from that time until William Charley was born in 1832 in Hursttown, Indiana at his future wife's parents house. After being married in 1852, the Charleys moved to Iowa and Nebraska before resettling in Indiana, where William Charley worked in lumber mills. In 1861, he enlisted in the Union Army and was eventually promoted to regimental buglar. Charley came to know prominent officers such as General Philip Sheridan, Major General George Meade, and General (George A! Custer. While enlisted in the 3rd Regiment, he took an active part in numerous battles,,.including Gettysburg. Having been discharged in 1865, he* headed west with his wife and children, living in Iowa until 1876 when they arrived in Jackson County, Oregon. By 1886, the family had purchased a homestead at Climax, Oregon, near the head of Antelope Creek, where they raised cattle. The Charleys retired to Medford and purchased the nominated property. William Charley died in 1920 at the age of 83. Andromeda Charley moved to Ashland after his death and lived until Their son, Lemon Charley ahd his wife Jennie Brown Charley, purchased the house in the 1920s. Lemon Charley was a prominent datry rancher who died of a heart attack in His wife, also the daughter of Oregon pioneers, remained in the house *W. J. Bennet's architectural" practice in Medford was short-tived (T894-C. 1896) but noteworthy as the earliest of record in the city. Bennet's output in the region was significant. He designed, a,mpng others, the Wilkinson-Swem Building, which has keen listed in the Register,
