OUTBUILDINGS Garage: ca. 1925, hip-roofed (asphalt shingle), frame (weatherboard) garage with open bay. HISTORICAL DESCRIPTION This house is a well-preserved example of a Dutch Colonial Revival-style dwelling constructed of stone. It was built by the Lindsey family and Clark Lindsey, an agent of the Mutual Life Insurance Company was living here in the 1930s. Arthur and Sue Keyser have owned and lived on the property since the late 1960s. The house is an excellent example of the style and a contributing element to the potential Oakhurst-Gildersleeve Neighborhood Historic District. 34

HISTORICAL DESCRIPTION This house is a well-preserved example of the Tudor Revival style and a contributing element to the potential Oakhurst-Gildersleeve Neighborhood Historic District. It is believed that the original owner was W. Carl Whitlock, who was a salesman, and that the house is still owned by his family. 36

These include overhanging eaves, an interior-end brick chimney, 10-light sidelights around the front door, 1/1 and 6/1-sash windows, 1-bay side and front porches with Doric columns, an eyebrow dormer, and a tripartite multi-light/1 bay window on the first-floor front. Constructed ca. 1921, the house is well preserved. 37
6 OUTBUILDINGS Shed: This ca hip-roofed stuccoed building was the original garage and was later converted into a shed. Garage: 1950s, this hip-roofed, stuccoed, 2-car garage was constructed in order to accommodate a larger car than the old garage would allow. HISTORICAL DESCRIPTION The original owner of this Colonial Revival-style modified American Foursquare was R. Chapin Jones, who was Director of the Virginia Forest Service (now the Virginia Department of Forestry) as well as an instructor in Forestry at the University. His daughter Carolyn J. Silver, still lives in the house. It is one of the earliest dwellings on Gildersleeve Wood and is a contributing element to the potential Oakhurst-Gildersleeve Neighborhood Historic District. 38

HISTORICAL DESCRIPTION This dwelling was constructed ca by Mildred Kauffman, who was widow of UVA professor Frank S. Kauffman, Jr. The builder was Charles C. Yowell, Jr. and the plans supposedly came from a patternbook. It is a contributing element to the potential Oakhurst-Gildersleeve Neighborhood Historic District. 40

OUTBUILDINGS Shed: ca. 1918, frame (weatherboard), gable-roofed (asphalt shingle) shed now used as a chicken coop. HISTORICAL DESCRIPTION According to Sanborn Maps, this dwelling was constructed ca and appears to be the oldest dwelling on Gildersleeve Wood. It is a fairly typical example of a cottage-style dwelling, a popular form during this time period. It is a contributing element to the potential Oakhurst-Gildersleeve Neighborhood Historic District. Since 1986 it has been owned and occupied by local architect, Michel Osteen. 42

14 the cross gable. Other details include a central stone chimney, overhanging eaves, exposed rafter ends, multiple-light casement window, and louvered shutters. OUTBUILDINGS Garage: ca. 1923, frame (stuccoed), hip-roofed (asphalt shingle) garage with exposed rafter ends, and sliding batten garage doors. HISTORICAL DESCRIPTION According to local historian Eugenia Bibb, the original owner of this house was Gardiner L. Carter, a UVA Chemistry professor. He sold it in 1929 to Ansell Kellog who sold it to Mortimer Caplin in Caplin did not own the house for long, and as a lawyer he taught at the University and later became US Commissioner of Revenue in the Kennedy administration. Since 1964, the house has been owned and occupied by Eugene and Jane Foster. It is a well-preserved example of a Craftsman Bungalow and is a contributing element to the potential Oakhurst-Gildersleeve Neighborhood Historic District. 46
