Barry does not like the limelight and would be the first to say he s only a small part of these efforts. It has never been about him. It was about providing a service as the friendliest place in town. Barry has known the new owners, Scott and Missy Reck, for about 18 years. He said when they heard of all the activities the stores have supported, they were amazed. He said it is their intention to continue to be Page 9 Flat Stanley The man of leisure returns by April Scheinoha Reporter He s a man of leisure, traveling around the world. His name is Flat Stanley, and he has many stories to tell Ṫhe paper doll recently returned from his trips visiting family and friends of first and second graders at St. Bernard s Catholic School in Thief River Falls. He got baptized, said second grader Rikki. He helped Christopher do the reading. Mike Barry and business partner Mike Wiebolt sold the stores, but Barry does not have any serious plans for the future. For the record, he personally doesn t have any plans to open a restaurant in Thief River Falls. Barry has been an active member of the community for years. Not only did he start several businesses but has been a member of the Board of Education and many clubs and organizations. Currently, he is on the Thunder on Hooves Bullride committee, the Thief River Falls Education Foundation and serves as vice president Rikki s Flat Stanley visited her dad s cousin Christopher in Lake Orion, Mich. Christopher works at St. Joseph Catholic School. Another Flat Stanley traveled to Vancouver, British Columbia, and Hawaii. First grader Kendall had sent him to her cousin Maria, who escorted him from her home in Vancouver to Hawaii. They rode on a plane, and they went to this cool place with statues, Kendall said. As part of the project, the first and second graders of Jobs Inc. It seems that over the years, Barry has become the first person people turn to for fundraising. Efforts he s participated in have raised thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands of dollars for charitable groups and organizations. Over 30,000, for example, has been raised for Prowler football. Then there s the efforts on behalf of the Takedown Club, Backcourt Club, baseball teams, School District 564, Prowler softball, Goodridge/Grygla volleyball, High School Band and many more. The stores have also been known for their signature fundraising could make a poster or write a book about their Flat Stanley s experiences. Both Rikki and Kendall chose to make posters. It s really fun, Rikki said about the project. The classes also read a chapter book in the Flat Stanley series. The book features the paper doll on his adventures as he travels around the world. Shelly Burkel s first grade class and Cindy Dallmann s second grade class used the Flat Stanley project as a geography lesson. Each year, St. Bernard s Catholic School tries to have its first grade class complete the project. Since Flat Stanley was off visiting other people last year, the school decided to have the second graders participate in the project this year along with the first graders. While Flat Stanley s companions may have shared stories about his adventures, some adventures were private. Rikki s Flat Stanley visited a confessional. As everyone knows, what happens in the confessional stays in the confessional. Isolation and detours The next destination in summer construction by David Hill Editor A small group gathered at the City Hall in Thief River Falls Tuesday to discuss construction that will affect nearly everyone in the community this summer. Highways 1 and 59 in Thief River Falls will be under construction and some of it at the same time. The highways are main thoroughfares through the community and the projects will cause considerable disruptions. No one at the meeting Tuesday disputed whether the projects are needed. The concerns were with detours and potential bottlenecks. Highway 1 from the bridge over the Thief River to Main Avenue will see the most construction. Crews will be removing all of the infrastructure - all utilities, including sewer and water. The utilities go down the center of Highway 1 and the ditch will be at least 16 feet deep. The south sidewalk has been removed and will not be replaced. The sidewalk on the north side of the eastwest highway will be r e p l a c e d with one that s 10-feet wide. From the east side of the bridge, Reserve and/or Dewey avenues to be open the detour for Highway 1 takes motorists north along paved County State Aid Highway 18 to 230th Street, then west to Highway 32, which takes motorists south to the city. It s roughly six miles north to 230th Street, so the total trip would be about 18 miles. Most people at the meeting who live east of the Eighth Street bridge know of a short cut and plan to take advantage of it. They plan to turn north and continue north on CSAH 18 (past the baseball fields) for one mile then turn west on County Road 63, cross Long s Bridge and then either return to Highway 1 or Eighth Street on Dewey Avenue or Reserve Avenue. This route is limited to vehicles weighing less than 5 tons and is narrow. (Law enforcement officials are expected to patrol the route.) The Minnesota Department of Transportation and Spruce Valley Construction, which is performing the construction on Highways 1 and 59, promised to keep one or both Dewey or Reserve avenues open during construction. This is important as it provides a shorter detour for residents who live east of the Eighth Street bridge, allows residents access to their homes, and allows emergency personnel access to homes and businesses in the area affected most by the construction. Spruce Valley representatives also said they have visited with fire, ambulance and law Page 9 NEW ENTRY-LEVEL FULL-TIME STARTING RATE! L! Apply Online Today! DIGIKEY.COM/CAREERS

Organizer Michael Davis Missionary nurse lives life of faith Karlstad - Valborg Torkelson has stories to tell. She is a farm girl who went on to become a nurse and a missionary, serving in faraway places like Columbia, Mexico and even a trip to China. At her sisters encouragement, she attended nurses training at Fairview Hospital in the Twin Cities, becoming a registered nurse after three years of study. From there, she applied to the American Mission Society. About 10 years ago, Valborg moved back to the Karlstad area to be near family. Now, at 94, she can t see anymore but remains upbeat. Memorization of the Bible now comforts her when she is unable to read it herself. Family and friends read the letters to her from her many connections around the world. Unless speci fied other - wise, the editorials are written by Editor Dave Hill and do not represent How to show your support on Memorial Day On television, our veterans are often portrayed as broken and in need of assistance. That s probably true for some of our veterans who have returned to society with long-term illness and injury. Because they served and protected our country, its values and freedoms, we have a responsibility to provide care and support for them throughout their lives. However, there are many veterans in our communities who are not broken. They are engaged in our communities. They are business owners, valued employees, volunteers and even community leaders. They bring to each situation experience and knowledge gained through service to our country. In 2016, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated the veteran population totaled 19 million men and women living in the United States and Puerto Rico who have served on active duty in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, National Guard or Coast Guard. They entered the military at different ages and came from different backgrounds. Some were drafted, while others volunteered. Their differences make each veteran unique. Statistics tell us that veterans of all generations tend to be more involved and more generous than non-veterans. Historically, veterans have been 45 Letters To The Editor: The staff of the Northern Watch en cour ages written re sponses to editorial comment or letters with original thoughts or ideas of general interest. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, generally, veterans are more educated that nonveterans. These statistics help provide an overall picture of who are veterans. They tell us veterans care, and communities benefit because of the lessons that military service teaches and the values it instills. How can we honor veterans on Memorial Day? We can attend Memorial Day ceremonies to honor those veterans who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and reflect on what that means. For many of our veterans who survived conflict, this is a very personal journey. They can still hear the voices of those they lost. For those of us who did not serve, I think attending Memorial Day services demonstrates your support, appreciation and respect for our country, our veterans and our community. Many of the veterans still living today contribute to our communities in many ways and they ask little in return. There are a couple of simple things we can do to show our thanks, respect and understanding: attend Memorial Day services and fly the American flag correctly. letters signed in print and will not withhold names of writers from publication. A letter to my brother, Dave Dear Dave, It always feels good to wrap up the month with a letter. Back in the 1970s, I used to send you a fair amount of hand-written letters and I think Mary and I corresponded some too. Those were good memories and the letters I write today typically compose themselves as they did when I was writing them back on the farm near Viking. I took time off during the last few days of Laine's life. I wanted to be around to care for her, but she mostly just slept. I needed to stay busy, so I worked on projects, Dave. I have wanted a new waterer for the cattle for years, so I installed one along with a wall to separate the two sides of the waterer. I think this waterer can handle 100 cattle, so it will serve two different corrals nicely. I wanted to level the concrete before I made the install but decided I like practicality more than looks and left all that concrete and re-bar alone. The wall had to be heavy and tough so I used 2 x 10s and 2 x 12s. It was heavy work for one person, but the bright side is it gives my chiropractor a little extra folding money for the month. Not all projects have to end with an ice pack, Dave. I finished up another sewing machine tractor and brought it in for decals. It's amazing how much of my effort really never shows on any project build. The efforts I make are essential to the success of the project, but you really don't see my efforts. What you really see is the paint, little design touches and decals. I mean, a sewing machine tractor would fall apart if I didn't gob on enough weld, but I hide most of the welds underneath. Also, I need sewing machines that easily lend themselves to conversion to a toy tractor, so a big part of the build is purchasing the appropriate sewing machine. Farmers are doing well around here, Dave. They caught up with seeding and had good weather to plant. Now we need some rain. Seeds have germinated, but their future is being played out in our pasture if we don't get some rain. The pasture right now shoots up each time it rains, but there isn't moisture reserve to tap into to continue growth. I don't like relying on timely rains, good subsoil moisture turns the cool light on in my mind and extinguishes the hot light. I do need to renovate a couple paddocks of pasture this year, but I think I will plant some peas, radishes and turnips and make this a transition year. I will be dry lotting some cattle this summer too, so Bryan Steiger is building me some new hay feeders. It will soon be very busy around here, but good memories are made of hard work so I look forward to it. I suppose we will talk to you on my radio program again this weekend, but until then, tell everyone hello. You're little bro' I recently installed a waterer for the cattle with a wall to separate its two sides. I think this can handle 100 cattle and will serve two different corrals. I finished another sewing machine tractor and brought it in for decals.

In 2016, there were 63,600 drug overdose deaths; over 65 percent of these overdoses were attributed to opioids, according to the National Vital Statistics System. On average, 115 Americans lose their lives to an opioid overdose, roughly one person every 13 minutes. In an effort to prevent opioid overdose, RiverView Recovery Center and the Glenmore Foundation invite the public to naloxone (Narcan) training Thursday, June 7. One training session will be held from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the RiverView Recovery Center, 309 LaBree Ave. N., Thief River Falls. The other training session will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the RiverView Recovery Center, 216 Center St. W., Roseau. Naloxone is a drug used to prevent opioid overdose. The training will educate attendees on how to administer naloxone and save a life. A 25 donation per person is asked for the RiverView Foundation although no one will be turned away if unable to pay. At this training attendees will learn: What naloxone (Narcan) is. How it works when administered to a person who has overdosed. How to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose. When to give naloxone to a person who has overdosed. Upon completion, they will have the opportunity to receive an overdose prevention kit. Please note this is not a CPR class. The training is being offered through the Steve Rummler HOPE Network. The HOPE Network was founded by Judy and Bill Rummler in honor of their son, Steve, who died of an opioid overdose in July The mission of the Steve Rummler HOPE Network is to heighten awareness of the disease of addiction as it relates to the physical and emotional burdens of chronic pain and to improve the associated care process. The network creates solutions to this epidemic through its three programs: prescriber education, advocacy, and overdose prevention through naloxone distribution. 7 Saturday, May 26, 2018 NORTHERN WATCH Page 7 TRF wins Section 8A tennis title Thief River Falls won five of seven matches to defeat Perham in the Section 8A championship match and claim a spot in the Class A tennis state tournament for the first time since Tuesday marked the 16th consecutive year that Thief River Falls competed in the section championship match, but each of the three previous championship match appearances ended in a loss to the Crookston Pirates. Crookston was a non-factor in this year's section tournament. After graduating the bulk of its lineup last year, the Pirates were eliminated from team competition following a first round loss to Detroit Lakes. Thief River Falls emerged as the team to beat early in the 2018 season, with seconded seeded Perham coming the closest among section teams to knocking off the Prowlers during the regular season. It does feel great, to get back to the state tournament, said Thief River Falls Head Coach Fabian Tunberg. Every one of our players, at all seven positions, did what we needed to do. With six of the seven matches underway at 10 a.m., it was Perham who gained the early momentum with leads in four of the six matches. Perham's number two doubles team of Anthony Reese and Jordan Muench were the first to claim a set victory, winning the first set over Dylan Hahn and Noah Rupprecht 6-2. A few minutes later, the Prowlers had a lead in the three doubles match as Ethan Janisch and Aiden Martell claimed the first set over Nathan Kawelewski and Elijah Schmidt. Momentum started to change in the dual as the Prowlers took the first set in a pair of singles matches, with Carter Onkka going up 1-0 on Perham's Ben Winkels in the two singles match with a 6-2 set win, and Camden Broadwell winning the first set of the four singles match against Perham's Drew Birkeland. Onkka would go on to win the second set over Winkles 6-0 to give the Prowlers a 1-0 lead. Back in eighth grade, when we last went to state, I was the last one off the court, Onkka said. This year, I ve been setting the tone for the team because it s nice to be up especially in a big match like this. Onkka said he was more excited than nervous for the big match. I woke up before my alarm, he said. I was ready to go today. Perham, meanwhile, had taken 1-0 set leads in the number three singles match and the one and two doubles matches. Broadwell was the second Prowler to secure a victory, claiming the second set over Birkeland 6-0 to give the Prowlers a 2-0 lead in the dual. Janisch and Martell kept the momentum going for the Prowlers, winning the three doubles match in straight sets to give Thief River Falls a 3-0 lead. Perham got on the board with a victory at one doubles by Gunnar Anderson and Ryan Murphy over Zach Twamley and Jack Onkka to cut the Thief River Falls lead to 3-1. The Yellowjackets added a second win at three singles, with Josh Peterson defeating Tucker Skime 6-2, 6-1 Ḣahn and Rupprecht, meanwhile, had rallied to tie their match at one set a piece with a 6-3 second set win and Cole Gillespie had taken the court against Perham's Carter Cresap in the number one singles match. Hahn and Rupprecht said it was important to stay consistent despite falling in the first set. Being the home team and having the crowd behind us really helped a lot, Rupprecht said. We were just into the match in the second set. We d never played like that before. Gillespie came out firing on all cylinders and won his first set 6-0. Hahn and Rupprecht kept the momentum from the second set and fed off the crowd to win six of eight games in the third set to clinch a Prowler victory. [The crowd] really helped us, especially in the third set to finish it out, Hahn said. It was awesome seeing everyone behind you, cheering you on whether you made a mistake or a great shot, Rupprecht said. Gillespie won the second 6-2 to give the Prowlers a fifth victory in the dual meet. Thief River Falls 5, Perham 2 n Singles - Cole Gillespie (TRF) def. Carter Cresap 6-0, 6-2; Carter Onkka (TRF) def. Ben Winkels 6-2, Prowlers take care of Pirates Top-seeded Thief River Falls scored 11 runs on 12 hits against Crookston starter Jasmin Hanson on its way to an 11-0 first round victory in the Section 8AA softball tournmaent. Crookston, which entered the game as a heay underdog after coming off a 1-15 regular season, looked like it would put the runs on the board in the first inning. Hanson was hit by a pitch with one out in the inning and Jaeden Lizakowski singled to push Hanson to second. Both runners moved into scoring position on a groundout by Emma Boll, but the Pirates fell short of plating any runs when Jenna Couette flew out to center. Thief River Falls pitcher and ledoff hitter Alexa Rogalla coaxed a five pitch walk to open the bottom of the first. She moved into scoring position with a stolen base and scored on a single by Lexi Huot. TRF splits twin bill Thief River Falls split a double header at Warroad Tuesday night, claiming a 12-7 victory in game one before falling 10-6 in game two. Thief River Falls got off to a fast start in the opener, plating one run in the first and three in the second. Warroad answered with five runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-4 lead. Thief River Falls kept putting runners on base, however, and scored single runs in both the third and fourth innings to regain the lead 6-5. Warroad tied the ballgame with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Thief River Falls broke the 6-6 tie with a six-run top of the sixth inning. Thief River Falls starter Grant Hartmann exited with the lead with one out in the sixth. He allowed six runs on seven hits, with four walks and seven strikeouts. Brayden Johnson, who replaced Hartmann on the mound in the sixth, pitched the final one and two-thirds innings and allowed a run in the bottom of the seventh. The Prowlers struck first again in game two, scoring a run in the top of the second. Warroad quickly took control of the game, however, scoring two runs in the second, two in the third and four in the fourth to take an 8-1 lead. The Prowlers started to creep back into the game in the sixth, scoring three runs to chase Warroad starter Jaron Moyer. Moyer exited after allowing four runs on six hits, with four walks and five strikeouts. Warroad ran its lead to 10-4 in the bottom of the sixth. The Prowler offense that got going in the sixth inning stayed hot in the seventh to score a pair of runs off of reliver Keaton Hoffman before the Warriors could close the book on a 10-6 win. Following a second inning in which they went down in order on just seven pitches, the Prowlers broke the game wide open in the third, scoring seven runs on eight hits. 9 Saturday, May 26, 2018 NORTHERN WATCH Page 9 The next destination in summer construction/continued (Continued from Page 1) enforcement regarding the project and said they will maintain emergency access for them. The project has been split into three phases. During Phase I, Atlantic Avenue and Eighth Street intersection and up to the railroad tracks will be closed for four working days, during which the infrastructure will be replaced. The road will then be covered with a gravel surface. A Spruce Valley representative said crews will be working from about 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and maybe weekends if they get behind. Phase II of the project will be for about 25 working days and involve construction from the railroad tracks to the Eighth Street bridge. Weather permitting, crews hope to complete this phase by July 4. Phase III of the project will be from Main Avenue to Atlantic Avenue and last about 15 days. Scott Bergland said this has to be one of the worst projects in the state. He questioned whether any planning had been done. He said it makes no sense to him to build another bridge one mile from an existing bridge, while citizens in this part of the community have only one access point into the community - the Eighth Street bridge. He said he believes there s more traffic in the morning on Highway 1 than Highway 59 and that area of the community needs another bridge. He said he understands this project needs to be done, but he believes not a lot of thought went into it. He added that he s also worried someone will get seriously injured this summer, especially if they don t do something at Third Street, which will become a serious bottleneck. MnDOT officials didn t disagree or agree with him regarding a bridge, but said they ve been in touch with the police department to provide officers for traffic control at the Third Street and Davis Avenue intersection. Later, Bergland suggested they close Third Street at the railroad tracks and /or encourage people to take First Street through town. After hearing concerns about parking in front of the Eagles Club narrowing Davis Avenue and adding to the bottleneck, state officials said they would visit with law enforcement and the Eagles Club. Officials said they hope motorists quickly realize that First Street or Greenwood Street will be faster and better options. Curt Howe, First Ward council representative where the Highway 1 project is being undertaken, urged patience during construction, but also had some questions. He wanted assurances Pennington Main and Square sold/continued (Continued from Page 1) involved in the community. Barry can t fully explain his desire to help others. Maybe it s because he grew up in Thief River Falls and is proud to be from Thief River Falls. More likely it has something to do with his parents, teachers, employers and mentors. Barry has always had a A drive to excel or surpass expect a t i o n s, which fortunately benefits from strong organ i z a t i o n a l skills and attention to detail. Some of those traits would have been noticeable in school when he was growing up in Thief River Falls. In school, he excelled when it came to projects and activities he enjoyed, such as DECA, and organizing a youth center in the Carnegie. He was also involved in student senate. While he was attending Northland Community and Technical College, he was class president. His parents also instilled in him a strong work ethic, but he said he was also influenced by his teachers and mentors. One of the most influential was Mrs. G or Appreciation Open House for Mike will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 31, at the American Legion in Thief River Falls. Mrs. Linda Goulet, who he said was uncompromisingly tough. After NCTC, Barry left Thief River Falls for 10 years, during which he lived in Jamestown, N.D. and St. Cloud, before moving back to Thief River Falls with his wife Kathy to raise their children. Kathy had also accepted the Recognition/ position of director of n u t r i t i o n services at Northwestern Medical Center. When Barry moved back, he helped Odette Bendickson open a brazier at the Dairy Queen. It was an exciting challenge and another experience that coincidentally played a role in the creation of Pennington Main and Square. Barry and Wiebolt have been friends since the fifth grade. After moving back to Thief River Falls, the idea of merging a convenience store with a gas station began percolating between the two. When they found the perfect spot, they built their stores around food and Hot Stuff Pizza, a move that has been prophetic. All of today s successful gas stations sell more food and convenience items than fuel. Barry said he s been told Pennington Main and Square is Hot Stuff s number one store in the nation. To date, the stores have sold 1.9 million pizzas. Barry has owned the stores for 27 years, which is an extremely long period of time in the life of a convenience store. As far as selling it, Barry said it was just the right time and Northdale Oil was a good fit. Now, Barry will be starting a new chapter in his life. Howe also asked whether MnDOT or Spruce Valley had talked to the railroad. Traffic is heaviest at certain times of the day and he would like to see assurances from the railroad that they won t block the intersections of Third and Eighth streets at the same time traffic is heaviest. Officials didn t think they d have any luck contacting railroad officials or in getting them to not block the roads during rush hours. Howe, however, continued to encourage them to make the attempt. Howe said in order to reduce traffic, the city will be conducting all its youth ball games at Franklin Middle School or Annie Park this summer. Officials anticipate the project will be completed in mid-august.
