The workshop, whch wll be from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., s beng held n an effort to better nform the publc on the changes that wll be made to the toll structure of the Cape Coral Mdpont Memoral Brdges the Sanbel Causeway. The two major reasons for the changes are to smplfy the complex toll structure that has more than 18 dfferent programs to allow those wth a LeeWay transponder to use the Florda Sun Pass System as well as any other toll roads throughout the state. Accordng to a press release from the Lee County Department of Transportaton, the new toll structure would provde several benefts to Lee County ctzens. The new toll plan wll replace the current structure wth a toll that s the same for all LeeWay customers. As of now, Lee County has proposed that all toll rates be set accordng to the current average toll pad by all Electronc Toll Collecton customers- or transponder holders. Under ths new structure, some customers wll pay less whle others wll pay more. However, the new structure wll feature a bult-n dscount that wll elmnate the concerns posed by the current structure whch allows frequent users to be subsdzed by the nfrequent users. For some, lazy days soakng up the sun just aren't enough, they need acton, the sls can provde t. On Captva, Yolo Watersports on Andy Rosse Lane Holday Watersports n the South Seas Resort rent a varety of water vehcles, both wnd- engne-drven, to the sl'svstors. Parasalng s another fast growng sport, snce there s vrtually no tranng nvolved, n ths sport, partcpants are secured to a parachute ether n a harness or a seat, whch s attached to a boat equpped wth at least a 100-horsepower engne, sent aloft as the boat heads nto the wnd. Parasalng got ts start n the early 1960s, when a man by the name of Perre Lamogne decded to attach a parachute to hs car. Once the rder reached a certan heght, the chute was released. About a decade later, Mark McCulloh got the dea of usng parachutes over the ocean. He was the frst to develop parasalng launch platforms, specalzed wnch boats that both let out draw n the parasal lnes. "The sensaton s usually more docle than what people antcpate," sad Scott Slnd, manager of Yolo Watersports. "People thnk ts gong to be lke a rollercoaster, but ts more lke a swng. It's not a huge adrenalne rush, ts a beautful, relaxng rde. They're thnkng ts gong to be so tremendously hgh scary a huge percentage of our clents have a fear of heghts - but t's not the same sensaton as f you're stng on a ladder or n a tall buldng." "Once you're strapped nto the harness, the parachute s attached you just st down n.the back of the boat take off l on that same spot." The harness ncludes a seat, s smlar to a heavy-duty clmbng harness. It can hold more than 300 pounds, so two people can sal together, weght permttng. Parasalng s avalable on ether the Gulf sde or the Pne Isl Sound sde of the Captva. 'There's a lot to see n ths area," Davd Brathwate, of Holday Watersports. "Overall, we face Pne Isl Sound, but we're only a couple hundred yards from Redfsh Pass. We can do ether sde, dependng on condtons." Personal watercraft, often referred to as 'jet sks' rank way up n popularty too, although there are age restrctons wth the use of these vehcles, operators must have a drvers lcense. "If you're under 22, n Florda, you have to pass a boaters safety course, whch s a short wrtten test that we gve here," Slnd sad. No prevous experence s necessary, basc nstructon s provded at the beach where the vehcles are moored. The Tour s so dffcult not only because of ts length, but also because of the varety of terran: flat farm country (deal for sprnters); narrow mountan roads wth grades as steep as 10% (that's up down); tme trals through vllage streets, n the ran, over cobble stones. Menendez took a practcal approach: he would put up wth Carlos for a whle longer f Carlos showed hm the trans-pennsula route. Carlos suggested that he would, but he had no ntenton of dong so. What he wanted was to avenge some slght commtted by Tocobaga, a Tmacua chef. When Menendez learned of Carlos' pur- Ponce de Leon pose, he convened a conference told the two chefs that both trbes would accept Chrstanty a truce. Carlos, n spte of havng been to Havana where he was treated as royalty, returned to Calos wth only one thought n mnd: rd South Florda of the Spanards. Don Felpe replaced Carlos as cacque, but thngs only became worse. The fort at Calos was sufferng the same prvatons as the forts on the east coast; converson to Chrstanty had been an abysmal falure. Father Rogel had returned to Cuba after a valant effort. Menendez was n Span, where he was tryng to rase money. Don Felpe wasn't much dfferent from Carlos: he played the same pont-counterpont tactcs that Carlos had played. He promsed to ensure that the Calusa would embrace. Chrstanty all the tme that he was plottng to overthrow the Spanards. When hs machnatons were dscovered, Raynoso had hm executed. Ths was the last straw for the Calusa. They burned the crosses San Mateo the Spansh fort fled nto the nteror. What happened to the Calusa over tme s a mystery. Some say they were wped out by the Creek from Alabama Georga, who had begun comng nto the northern Florda contnued to move south. Ths theory s as doubtful as the one that mantans that the Calusa came from that area. The Semnoles a Creek splnter group that also ncluded Apalachee Indans run-away slaves had some skrmshes wth the Calusa, but as they dubbed the Calusa, the Bad People, t sn't probable that the Semnole prevaled. Two other theores seem much more tenable: some of the Calusa paddled off to Cuba were assmlated nto that populaton; but the majorty of the trbe probably succumbed to European dseases lke smallpox ard nfluenza, for whch they had no mmunty. One fnal theory holds that they stll exst n small, dscreet pockets n the Everglades, especally around Bg Cypress. New butterfly avary n Fort Myers On Saturday, July 26, the Calusa Nature Center dedcated hosted a Gr Openng celebraton for ts one-of-a-knd Butterfly Avary & Natve Plant Nursery. The 1,000-square-foot screened avary s home to 30 dfferent speces of Florda butterfles has been desgned wth a brck walkway that ushers vstors from the Museum through the butterfles to the Audubon brd avary. It s the largest butterfly dsplay between Tampa Fort Lauderdale. Caterpllars pupae are also on dsplay n the Natural Hstory Lvng Museum. "The walk-through has ters of natve plants on both sdes that noursh hundreds of butterfles wth nectar food for ther caterpllars," sad Mchael Smonk, executve drector of the center. "We're callng t the Butterfly Avary & Natve Plant Nursery because all the plants are for sale to help people create butterfly habtats n ther own backyards." Both butterfly larvae butterfly nectar plants are avalable. Prces range from less than $5 for bloomng nectar plants to $23 for trees. A vst to the Butterfly Avary s ncluded n regular Nature Center admsson. Everyone s nvted to "adopt" the butterfles by purchasng a brck that wll be engraved set n the walkway. Brcks are avalable n two szes, one for $50 wth three lnes of text the other for $100 wth sx lnes of text. They can be purchased by downloadng the form from the Nature Center's webste, CalusaNature.com or at the Museum's front desk. Volunteers are needed n the Avary to help care for the butterfles caterpllars help wth sell the plants. Call to enroll as a volunteer. A major gft by Charles Edgar Foster n trbute to hs late wfe, Margaret, known as the "Frst Plant Lady of the Nature Center," helped fund the project. Foster, a thrd generaton area natve, s known locally as the "Caloosahatchee Rver Rat" because of hs eco-teachng knowledge of the rver. Employees of The Bonta Bay Group, O'Donnell Lscapes, Gravna, Smth & Matte, Barraco & Assocates helped buld the screen enclosure. The team spent two days n July creatng the garden ters wth plants shrubs, layng the brck walkway nstallng the rrgaton system. "The Bonta Bay Group has helped many organzatons wth envronmental natve lscape projects, we were very pleased when they offered to partner n a project wth us," Smonk sad. The prelmnary ndex rose two ponts to 93 n June. In May, t rose three ponts to 91, n Aprl seven ponts to 88. The ndex n benchmarked to 1966, so that a value of 100 represents the same level of confdence for that year. The value of the ndex s n comparng changes over tme rather than lookng at an solated month. The largest gan was n the component measurng perceptons about whether t s a good tme to buy bgtcket tems, whch, rose fve ponts to 105. Vews on personal fnancal stuatons expected one year from now rose to three ponts to 102, expected natonal economc condtons over the next year rose two pont to 87. Oh, I don't mean Jorge Borges' Labyrnths or the hydrodynamcs nvolved n the Gulf Stream the North Amercan Drft. I mean everyday stuff, lke packages. Yeah, packages. You know the stuff other stuff comes n. I'm not even gong to touch "chldproof caps. There s no challenge there, except gettng the damn thngs open by the people the product s desgned to help. Kds can pop them open on the frst try. No, nstead I'm gong to focus on the subtlety dabolcal on the ntrnscally confoundng. Last month I was flyng home from Seattle, when I dd a rare thng: I fell asleep. I never sleep on planes. Anyhow, when I woke up there was a package of those new breath strps on my armrest. For a moment, I thought ether the person next to me had regstered a complant or that the flght attendant was tryng to tell me somethng. The kd next to me well, he was probably 20 anyhow, the kd nexttome had long ago dropped off nto a self-nflcted coma, the result of some bass-heavy, newage nusc he was cerebrally manlnng from hs Sony Dsk Player; so t was unlkely he ratted me out. Snce I had a wndow seat, I doubted I could have offended the flght attendant from so far away. Then I realzed that everyone around me had been gven these. It was a promo. I looked at the package. It was about four nches long two nches wde. I carefully consdered how to open t. My frst analyss faled. I thought about the Charles Atlas approach, but no one else around me seemed to know how to open thers ether, so I took on the challenge. What are the permutatons? I thought. It's flat, whch means t ether has a trap door n the back, or t snaps open some way, or t sldes open. I sld the outer package left to rght was admtted to the next chamber. I examned t carefully. There was a plastc wndow, whch was backed surrounded by cardboard; through the wndow I could see the product's sanctum sanctorum, a one nch by _ nch plastc capsule that held the pastlle. I turned the package over several tmes: no sldng panels, no tabs, no "tear here" tp-off. I took out my car key rammed t nto the back of the package. I had broken n, but I stll had to peal away the packng. Fnally, I was face to face wth the nner plastc chamber. I felt lke Indana Jones havng passed the frst two of the three tests n hs pursut of the Holy Gral. Now, all I had to do was pass the test of hefathfl, I would have eternal fresh breath. Whereto go: so many packages, so few words? When I was a kd, I worked summers on my uncle's farm. I remember that the feedbags had a woven-strng closure wth a tag strng at one end. Pull the tag strng the bag would easly unzp. Dog-food bags theoretcally employ the same desgn. Now, I' ve had dogs for the better part of the last 25 years. Even though I could open feedbags flawlessly when I was 12,1 have yet to successfully open a dog-food bag as an adult. I don't even bother wth the strng anymore. I use a Buck knfe the Jack-the-Rpper method, wthout the grapes. How about those plastc produce bags n supermarkets? You know, the ones you pull off rolls you wonder whch end you should try to open. It doesn't matter much: the open end s just as hard to open as the sealed end because of the statc electrcty that bulds up on such a thn dener. I've cracked the code about whch end to work wth, even when t sn't labeled, but t hasn't helped much. One day at Wal-Mart I pulled off eght bags n a row before successfully openng one. I know the trcks: wet your thumb forefnger, slde the plastc sde to sde, ntone the DuPont mantra, vola. Plop n your produce, te a smple knot n the neck so t won't roll out at the check-out, you're all set. Try to get the damn knot undone when you get home. Don't bother, go get the knfe. Batteres! They come n cardboard packages wth sealed plastc wndows. Sometmes, f you are lucky there s a back door you smply slt wth your thumbnal; most of the tme, however, you aren't lucky. Don't waste tme; go get the knfe, better yet buy a knfe keep t on you. Saves all those trps. Why do batteres need to be packaged anyway? They already come n metal contaners! The most nsdous of all packages are the ones that contan those polystyrene "peanuts." The package s usually cardboard wth a sngle sealng strp of plastc tape. Ths package s desgned to be opened wth a knfe, so I don't have a problem usng one on t. The problem comes when you get the outer package open. The nner package, also of cardboard, frequently has a "shrnkwrap" skn: 1 guess to keep the product fresh, even f t's somethng lke software. The "shrnk-wrap" the "peanuts" have a natural affnty for each oler, knda lke dogs n heat. When you try to separate them cold water mght work, but t would probably damage the product the "peanuts" clng to your h "peanut" fragments levtate out of the box seekng out the "shrnk-wrap" or your carpet fbers, whch are more than lkely also statcallycharged plastc. Slt open the "shrnk wrap," move the nner package away from the polystyrene force feld, try to gather up the escaped "peanuts" ther fragments: an mpossble task. Try to vacuum them up; t just energzes them. The smart thng to do s leave them, untl they expre to ther half-lfe, whch wll render them more nert. But I'd recommend sellng your house: you wll be nert long before they wll. If you are envronmentally responsble, you'u notce several phenomena about these "peanuts" at the recyclng center. Frst, you can't get all of them nto the dumpster. Some wll clng to the cardboard box; others, to you, no matter how many tmes you try to flck them off. Even f you could, when the garbage truck lfts up the dumpster to ngest (oops, poor choce of words) ts contents, the "peanuts" sprng to lfe bllow out. Fnally, when you close your trunk, you wll see whte "peanut" fragments clngng to the plastc fber of your trunk mat. Mke Vrost lokl Dear Mke: The Screw Pne (Panus utls, zones 10-11) s a stunnng small tree from Madagascar whch gets t common name from the screw-lke appearance of ts branches the pne-cone look of the large fruts that are borne on female plants. It s not, however, a pne tree. I suspect that the branches emanatng from the base of your tree are the begnnng of aeral roots, whch not only provde support, but gve the tree a very nterestng look. Generally speakng, the Screw Pne needs no trmmng, I would leave.the sde growth ntact. Rarely exceedng a heght of 25 feet, the salt-tolerant Screw Pne s vrtually pest-free thrves n most any sol. It should be fertlzed at least twce a year. I- would use a qualty palm fertlzer, whch you can also use on practcally every other shrub tree n your lscape. The problem you descrbe wth your Papaya fruts s wdespread n South Florda s the result of nfestaton by Papaya frut fles (Toxotrypana curvcauda). They often are mstaken for wasps because of ther smlar appearance, but are not. Female frut fles lay ther eggs (100 or more at a tme) on mmature Papaya fruts, where the larvae develop begn a feedng frenzy. When the frut rots falls to the ground, the larvae form pupae just below the sol surface soon emerge as adult frut fles to begn the cycle anew. The best way to protect fruts s to enclose them n paper bags, whch you te around the stems. You should do ths as soon as you see a tny frut emerge, adjustng the sze of the bags as the fruts develop. Control nvolves the mmedate removal of nfested frut both on the tree on the ground so that the lfecycle of the frut fles can be broken. Mango fruts usually rpen n Sate wnter Dear Ron: My neghbor has a 10-yeaold Mango tree n hs yard that produced frut only once many moons ago, whch had never been fertlzed. Amy Flemng Sanbel Dear Amy: Plants often go nto severe shock when they are transplanted, because severng ther roots prevents them from absorbng the nutrents water they need to reman robust. The survval of a transplanted shrub or tree s never a sure bet, but here's a process albet a bt tedous tme-consumng ~ that I've found helps ncrease the chances. Cut the plant back by one-thrd, both wdth-wse heght-wse, concentratng on formng a compact plant. Ths s mportant because t wll result n less water loss (transpraton) from the leaves wll enable t to survve wth a smaller root system. Dg a tench about 6 nches deep, about 3 to 6 nches out from the edge of the trmmed canopy, around half the base of the plant. Cut away the roots n the trench fll t wth mulch. Two weeks later, repeat the process on the other sde. In a week or so, new roots should start developng h the mulched trench, after four to sx weeks, the new root growth should be suffcent for a more vable transplant. Mangos Dear Bonne: Yes, there s hope that frut wll develop, but a lot depends on the extent to whch the flowers were pollnated ether by the wnd, or by vsts from bees butterfles. Fruts start to develop on the Mango tree (Mangfera ndca, zones 10-11) shortly after the pollnated flowers dsappear, you should be able to see tny emergng fruts wthn a month. Suspendng prelmnary budget hearngs orgnally scheduled to be held ths week, Commssoners agreed to begn what was termed "prortzng" n an effort to trm the County's proposed $38 mllon budget. The Commsson acton was prompted n part by the natonwde taxpayer revolt, a movement touched off last month when Calforna voters passed Proposton 13. In Lee County the revolt s beng spearheaded by the Lee County Tax Payers League, a group founded two weeks ago by Roger Henderson, a used car salesman Fort Myers resdent for seven years. Clamng he represented Lee County;s 60,000 voters, Henderson appeared last Frday before the county commsson to "Impress upon commssoners that the taxpayers are tred of lettng the government squer ther money needlessly." Henderson demed that the county approve no budget ncrease reduce ts ad valorem tax to fve mlls- approxmately 2.2 mlls short of the county tax leved last year. The turtle's head had been slashed but kept n tact by a vertebrae. The second washed up on Sanbel's west end near Gulf Shore Place last Frday, July 24. 11 20 Week of July 31-Aug. 6, 2003 ISLAND REPORTER ENVIRONMENT Gophers the homebulders of the sl Lots of crtters depend on tortose burrows By Mchael Hannan The gopher tortose (Gopherus polyphemus) belongs to a group of l tortoses that orgnated n western North Amerca nearly 60 mllon years ago. At least 23 speces of tortose are known to have exsted on our contnent snce that tme, but only four reman today. Three of the lvng speces, the desert tortose (Gopherus agassz), Texas tortose (Gopherus berler), Bolson tortose (Gopherus flavomargnatus) are found n the southwestern Unted States northern Mexco. The ancestors of gopher tortoses, along wth those of scrub jays, burrowng owls, short-taled snakes, were part of the savanna fauna that mgrated nto the southeastern Unted States mllons of years ago. Gopher tortoses are the only tortose found n Florda Gopher tortose populatons are scattered throughout the coastal plan of the southeastern Unted States, wth most beng found n north-central Florda southern Georga. The speces has- been severely reduced n southern Alabama Msssspp, southeastern Lousana, southeastern South Carolna, along Florda's southeast coast throughout much of the Florda Panhle. In Florda alone, gopher tortose populatons have dwndled to an estmated 30 percent of ther orgnal numbers. Gopher tortoses, or "gophers" as they are commonly called, lve n extensve subterranean burrows n dry upl habtats, habtats that nclude longleaf Health Care Servces pne shlls, xerc oak hammocks, scrub, pneflat woods, dry prares, coastal dunes. Tortoses can also lve n man-made envronments, such as pastures, old felds, grassy roadsdes. To be sutable for gopher tortoses, the habtat must have well-draned sy sols for dggng burrows, herbaceous food plants, open, sunny ^areas for nestng baskng. Perodc natural fres play an mportant role n mantanng tortose habtat by openng up the canopy promotng growth of herbaceous food plants. If natural fres are suppressed, habtats may become unsutable for tortoses. Today, l managers use prescrbed fre to mantan tortose habtat. The gopher tortose s a keystone speces, meanng ts extncton would result n measurable changes to the ecosystem n whch t occurs. The lfe of a gopher tortose revolves around a tunnel-lke burrow that s excavated usng ts shovel-lke front feet. Burrows can be up to 40 feet (12 meters) n length 10 feet (3 meters) n depth. Each burrow has a sngle openng the wdth of the burrow s approxmately equal to the length of the tortose. Therefore, the tortose s able to turn around at any pont wthn the burrow, consequently, burrow wdth s a good ndcator of the sze ( approxmate age) of the tortose. Gopher tortose burrows are usually easy to spot n the lscape because of the characterstc mound of loose s at the burrow entrance (called the "apron"). Gopher tortoses are qute terrtoral; accordngly, they may lve n one burrow for most of ther lves. The lst ncludes the ndgo snake, pne snake, gopher frog, Florda mouse, opossum, armadllo, burrowng owl, gopher crcket, scarab beetles, many others. Some, such as the Florda mouse, cannot exst wthout the tortose burrow. Juvenles have brght tan brown shells whle the shells of adults are darker. The upper shell s brown or tan, wth growth rngs evdent on younger ndvduals, but these are worn away on adults. The under shell s unhnged, dull yellow, wth the soft parts beng graysh brown. The upper shell can range n. length from four to nne nches. The feet of ths tortose are stumpy wthout webs, ther heads are large blunt. Compared to the other speces n ts genus, the gopher tortose's head s broad, hnd feet small,.shell elongate. The gopher tortose can be found every month of the year wth peak actvty beng May or June. They spend ther nghts n the burrows' emerge daly n warm weather, usually n the mornng before the heat s too great, to forage for food. Overall, the gopher tortose s an herbvore that enjoys low vegetaton. It spends most of ts foragng tme grazng n areas wth a good supply of grasses herbs. Its food prmarly conssts of low growng vegetaton ncludng wregrass, broadleaf grasses, legumes, frut such as gopher apples, pawpaws, blackberres, prckly pears, saw palmetto berres. In the matng season, n addton to "joustng", males wll walk n a crcle around females bobbng ther heads up down. Ths attracts the females. Then males wll commonly bte females n the upper shell or leg. Ths s a sgnal for the female not to move. Males utter short raspng calls, to attract females, whch could be related to courtshp matng. They also have a par of gls under ther chn that may functon to attract females. Females lay ther eggs n late Aprl to July. They are deposted, fve or sx eggs at a tme, n holes dug n the ground so that they are protected from the blazng sun. Once n the nest cavty the eggs are ncubated for approxmately days. Once young hatch they are kept n secret, protected by ther parents, n the burrows untl they can lve on ther own. Stll, most of the eggs are lost to predaton. Many mammals, ncludng raccoons skunks, fnd the eggs the hatchlngs an rresstble food source. Because of the hgh loss to predators researchers beleve that survval of hatchlngs may only occur once n every ten years. It s beleved that the hatchlngs lve out there frst wnter n the female's burrow eatng her dung for sustenance. The next year they dg ther own burrows. Adult gopher tortoses requre as many as years to mature, but can lve 40 years or longer. Habtat loss s the man reason for the declne n gopher tortose populatons. They are now a protected speces; however, such protecton doesn't deter some people from destroyng the tortoses' burrows, preferrng to pay the fne rather than foregong l development.
