I can't believe how fast this year is flying bye. For most of the country fall has begun and temperatures are falling but not here. This has been one hot and rainy summer and I for one will be glad to see it go. I think I've taken more showers on my bike then I have at home lol. By the time you read this newsletter our keynote event will have taken place and I'm confident it was a complete success. I want to thank the many club members that help to make the day run so smoothly, but I would especially like to thank Charlie Anderson and his committee for their MONTHS of hard work without which this entire event would not have taken place. At our last Chapter meeting we began the process of nominating our new elected officers for next year. I know things got a bit confusing at the end with members being nominated for two different positions at the same time and if some nominees even excepted the position they were nominated for, but I assure you is will all be corrected by our October meeting. We've had another busy month of rides thanks to the hard work of Georgia Nelson and our strong team of hard working Road Captains. The role of Road Captain is often just assume by many and I myself know how much work goes into that task, so next time you go on a ride take a moment and thank your Road Captain for making that days ride possible. I know it's a little early but I personally am getting pretty excited about our up coming Christmas party. Kim has done a fabulous job of putting together a super event. I can't wait to hear the live band and eat the delicious food and drinks she's arranged for us. So don't wait to long there's a limited number of tickets. I've also heard rumors we may be having another outstanding seafood boil before the year is over and believe you me, you will not want to miss that one. Until next month ride safe and ride often. LOH Officer: Gift wrapping schedule for shop is now out and has slots to fill. We begin this on black Friday. Christmas party on Dec. 5th, $15.00 per member, $30.00 per guest. Key Note Event Coordinator: Charlie Anderson spoke about the event to be held on September 27, Head Road Captain: Reminded new folks about orientation after meeting. Safety Officer: Discussed the Rider Training classes and a safety testimony by Mr. Youngblood. Director: Lunch ride after meeting to Off the Traxx, lunch on the HOG chapter. Membership Officer: New Members Introduction Volunteer Patches awarded by Wayne Cote Director: awarded Ride Patches, Volunteer Drawing, Random Rider Award, Road Captain Award and Rider Award given out. Secretary- (1 year term) no nominations Treasurer- (2 year term) Charlie Burton- accepted Assistant Director- (1 year term) Nick Galuzzi - tabled till next month Mickey Goshnen- accepted Director- (2 year term) Georgia Nelson - tabled till next month Nominations Closed. 50/50 Golf Tournament raised $2, for our Key Note Event- Thank you Charlie Burton and Bobbie Wheeler Road Captain Gary Corbett discussed his overnight ride coming up... contact for details Meeting 12:06pm Respectfully Submitted, by Georgia Nelson, Secretary On Sunday September 14, I was one of eight Board members along with other Florida HOG Chapters on a conference call for over 90 minutes including 80 HOG members and dealers that attended the meeting at Gator Harley Davidson in Leesburg. The meeting was called to order for the planning of the 2015 Florida State Rally. Presentations were made from Jacksonville and Fort Meyers. Both groups did a great job with various speakers. Those members on the conference call were able to cast their vote via text at the end of the presentations and a vote was cast among all eligible HOG Chapters present. It was a close race but ultimately Fort Meyers won. The new name will be Six Bends (the name derives from the six bends in a motorcycle handlebars). I hope to see a large Space Coast participation.

3 Rick Orahood Jim Chaloux Well I m happy to say that August is over, it was a warm one, but it didn t seem to stop all of us from riding. We averaged about 17 bikes per ride for the middle of the heat season, so it was really nice to see we are all out there riding our scoots. We have seen some new faces, welcome to you all. And I hope you all have made it to our new member orientations we hold every month after the chapter meeting. We cover some good informative stuff that will help you understand how we ride and how to be prepared for a ride with our group. So if you re new to our group welcome and hope to see on at a meeting and of course a ride. If you didn t notice our rides for August were all short to medium lengths rides so we could beat the rain getting home and I think mission accomplished, well done RC s and activities. It was a well-rounded ride schedule with a mix of breakfast and lunch rides along with I think our 3 rd or 4 th over-nighter so far this year, which Shahmard took us to Mt. Dora to stay at the first Hotel in Florida (The Lakeside Inn). Along with his famous ride down thrill hill. Some other interesting information: Usually I talk about the riders with the most rides in the month or quarterly statistics or lead the most rides or most sweeps, but this month I d like to mention some of our other folks that ride with us very often, but just under those that ride every ride. So here we go: People with 9 rides so far this quarter: Bryan Brown, Bernie & Jane Cobb, Ed Crampton People with 7 rides: Bob Best, Charlie Burton, Jeff Smead, Robert Wheeler. Our Road Captains that are always there for us to lead us on another adventure or watch our backs and sweep for us. 6 Grover Schaffner Avoid Truck No-Zones No-zones are the areas near a semi-truck's side, rear and FRONT where motorcycles disappear into substantial blind spots. Truckers can't see vehicles lingering in the side no-zone, causing a potential hazard if a lane change becomes necessary. And tailgating in the rear no-zone directly behind and fairly close to the truck not only hides you from the driver, but also radically reduces your view of traffic ahead. When you're driving near semi-trucks, always be aware of these no-zones. Remember, too, that if you can't see a trucker's mirrors, the trucker most likely can't see you. The picture below illustrates the No-Zones from the front of the truck. When you pass a truck you should avoid cutting in front of the cab too soon since you are then in the No-Zone in the front of the semi. It may take a long time to pass large trucks, maintain your speed and wait until the front of the truck is visible in your inside rearview mirror before switching back into the truck s lane. Please see diagram below. Note that the No-Zone extends 20 feet in front of the semi. Also, don t slow down after passing a semi. Finally, ride safe, wear your helmet and remember to fasten the buckle.

7 By Ken Gordon, Historian The Eagle Soars Alone June 16, 1981 Harley-Davidson, acquired by American Machine and Foundry in 1969, was purchased back from AMF by a group of 13 Harley executives just 12 years later. Because of AMF s support during those years, Harley was able to remain the leader in heavyweight motorcycle sales, despite the fiercest competition the foreign manufacturers could provide. Still, employees were excited by the new prospects as the company regained its independence. It is rare in America that a company has the opportunity to un-merge, to stand on its own after having been part of a larger organization. Following months of negotiation and scores of meetings with legal and financial experts, Harley-Davidson once again became an independent company. With around $75 million invested in securities and cash (including the officer s own money), there was strong incentive to run the most efficient, responsive operation possible. To commemorate the buy-back, approximately two dozen company officers, along with their wives and select motorcycle press, made a cross-country motorcycle trek from the production facilities in York, PA to Harley- Davidson s main offices on Juneau Avenue in Milwaukee. This 900-mile independence journey was also a ride to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association, now the official charity of HOG. The ride followed a host of ceremonies at York which included the signing of documents that marked the ownership change, and pulling the first new Harley-Davidson motorcycle off the assembly line. This 4-day celebration began a new chapter in the company s exciting future. Ref:
