1 Harley Owners Group - Space Coast Chapter Newsletter Chapter No August 2008 Hog Talk 2008 Officers Al Boileau, Director SCHOGAsstDir@cfl.rr.com Jan Boileau, Secretary Hogsectjan@aol.com Joe Cascio, Treasurer jcascio4@cfl.rr.com Rich Cohen, New Membership rcohenschogs@yahoo.com Brian VanAlstine, Activities top-gun@cfl.rr.com Tom Rio, Editor tar33165@bellsouth.net Jim Glazar, Road Captain (cell) (home) glazar@bellsouth.net Charlie Braden, Safety Officer bigdummy325@hotmail.com Barbie Braden, Ladies of Harley bbharleygirl@hotmail.com Nick Galluzzi, Merchandise FOPSY316@AOL.com Photographer Jan Boileau Webmaster Brian VanAlstine Historian Onnie Massey The Director s Corner Greetings Fellow HOG Members, By now you must know that Georgia has resigned her position as Director for numerous reasons and I have been selected to fill the position for the remainder of the year. Georgia has been on the board for over 4 years and spent the last 2½ years as our Chapter Director. She has volunteered her time and efforts above and beyond what most people would give and now it is time for us to wish her well with her new direction in life. I, for one, will miss seeing her smiling face at our functions but she has assured me that she will attend whenever possible. When you do see her, please let her know how much you appreciate what she has given to the Chapter. If you did not attend the annual LOH picnic you missed out on the best one ever. Barbie and Charlie Braden were the coordinators and they did an outstanding job. They had games for us to play and the winners received some really great prizes for their efforts. The Grant Grillers consisting of Pete Herndon and Drema cooked the meats; pork butts and chicken and as usual everything was done to perfection. None of this could have been possible if Rich Cohen had not made arrangements for us to have the picnic at Rotary Park. This location is so good we have made plans to hold next year s party there again. Have you noticed that it is getting HOT out there? With the weather so HOT it is very important that you stay well hydrated and to do that you must drink water before you realize you are thirsty. The Shop sells a bottle holder that mounts to the handle bar and it is a great place to hold a bottle of water. If you don t have one you should consider getting one for your own health. A large group of us will be heading to Milwaukee, WI for the HOG 25th Anniversary and the HarleyDavidson 105th Anniversary. It will take place the end of August and most of us have been planning this trip for some time now. One thing I m sure of is that on a 2,500 mile trip you can expect just about everything; rain, cold, hot, traffic, Interstate, back roads, some beautiful riding and did I mention HOT? If you have any trips in the future don t forget to plan for the unexpected and make your trip something you will have fond memories of. The Florida State HOG Rally is October at Cocoa Beach this year. If you know that you are going to attend you should pre-register at Pre-registered members are assured the Rally T-shirt and pin will be in their rally packet. Pre-registration ends on September 7. On-site registrations pay the same price as those that pre-register except they do not receive a T-shirt and pin. Cost for these items is $15.00 per shirt and $6.00 per pin. Why pay $61.00 on site when you can pay $40.00 and get it all if you pre-register. In closing, I look forward to being your director and please know that you can always contact me with any questions or concerns you might have. Remember, the Ride is what we are all about and second is Where are we going to eat? 6 Thank you to everyone for making this a successful picnic Well we are halfway through the year, boy time flies when you are having fun. Last month was the Annual HOG Picnic. We had lots and lots of great food (Thank you Grant Griller, Dreama, Georgia and Allen). Suntree Rotary Park was a treat (thanks Rich) and played some pretty crazy games, but most of all we had FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Congrats to all the winners of the games... If you missed the picnic, check out the website for pictures. Hopefully next year you can come out and try to participate in our now famous Potato Race. Next year s picnic is set the date is June 28, 2009 same time, same place, same bat channel. I am sure our participants from 2008 will be primed and ready for Anyone with ideas or interested in helping plan for next year would be greatly appreciated, just get with me. The next Ladies of Harley ride is Sunday August 17, We will be going to Crabby Bill s; they feature 100% Gulf Grouper sandwiches and Bairdi crab. Ladies and Gentlemen are both invited. Gentlemen remember the difference between a Chapter ride and LOH ride is that the Lady riders are in the front, lady passengers next, and then the rest of the riders bring up the back of the pack. (You have to admit the view isn t so bad either, hahaha.) Look forward to seeing all of you for the ride. Ride safe and have fun because I am Barbie Braden Ladies of Harley Officer

9 Safety Officer Says Hey, I want to say a quick hello and say thanks for the opportunity as the Chapter s Safety Officer. I am looking forward to the opportunity to share some Safety information, riding skills training with new and seasoned members, as well as the opportunity to learn from each of you. Some of you may know this already, however I just wanted to share with everyone that myself and Barbie (my wife) are both Rider s Edge Instructor s with the shop. This does not make either one of us an expert on riding or safety however I plan on sharing our training and knowledge to help our Chapter members become more aware of their overall riding safety and responsibilities as well as the opportunity to increase their riding skills through actually training. In the past the Chapter s only training was held as Road-Captain training a few times throughout the year, while I believe any type of motorcycle training is a great opportunity to increase your skill level and better than working any day of the week, sometimes it can be a little intimidating and frankly some people have no interest in becoming a Road-Captain. But specific skill development would help overall comfort level and address some of those old habits, therefore helping with the overall safety while riding. Well what I would like to bring to the Chapter is skills training. Working on one particular skill at a time, possibly after a Saturday meeting and work on different skills throughout the year. Hey this is just an idea and its voluntary so if you re not interested so be it, however it would be better to work on something in a controlled area than out on the road. If anyone has as any suggestions or areas of interest that can be addressed as we move along throughout the year, please let me know and we ll adjust to whatever works best for the group. I have spoken with Jim Glazar and Road Captain training will probably be scheduled some time toward the end of this year, probably November / December time frame. So bear with me as I get adjusted to this role and try to get situated with scheduling for the remainder of the year. I will also try to set up new member orientation to get everyone the opportunity to get the basic training under their wheels. Everyone knows that when you ride a motorcycle you accept a certain amount of risk, so let s limit the amount of risk that we re taking by increasing our safety awareness as well as increase our skill levels. So let s keep it positive and have some fun because if it s not fun why are we doing it. Charlie Braden Bigdummy325@hotmail.com (don t let the name fool ya)

11 Chapter meeting called to order on July 5th, 2008 at Pineda H-D. Pledge of Allegiance recited. Director Al Boileau Welcomed all. Minutes from last meeting accepted. As you all know by now, Georgia has resigned as Director. As assistant director, I did not have too much to do; now I ll have too much to do. Georgia gave over 4 years to the board, 2 + as Director. We wish Georgia well and God speed with her new life and if you see her, thank her for all she gave to the Chapter. Charlie and Barbie Braden did an excellent job with the LOH picnic; the best ever. The games such as the now famous potato race. (next time, bigger potatoes ) and prizes galore. Georgia s dad Pete and girlfriend Dreama of Grant Grillers cooked delicious pork butts and chicken. (Mr. Bacon was present and accounted for afterwards.) And a big thanks to Rich Cohen for securing Rotary Park for this years event. He has assured us, he will try and reserve it next year also. We recently had a turnover in positions one of which is for Safety Officer. Terry Sprinkle had to resign because of work, and Charlie Braden has graciously agreed to continue for the remainder of the year. For you who are not aware of it, we have Mr. Bacon the Traveling Hog with us until Saturday July 19th. The Traveling Hog has 8 chapters from Central Florida that participate. Every two months, we gather at the prior winners home club, and meet at either their dealership or a local restaurant for fun and camaraderie. For every five club members signed in, one ticket is allotted. Whoever wins him in the lottery, keeps him for two months, and he goes to all their club functions. He has been around the world, in jail for stealing a bike, and just returned from Rolling Thunder. The woman love to kiss him. He has his own website and photo album. Check him out. This is the first time in the history of Mr.Bacon that the Space Coast Chapter has won him. So hopefully you will join us on Saturday July 19th at Pineda Harley Davidson to see him off to his next destination. We are not eligible to win him two times in a row, but he will be up for grabs again in September. Tom and Sylvia Arnold have been our Tuesday night chapter food folk. They have pressing obligations that have made it difficult to continue. Thank you again Tom and Sylvia for an outstanding job. Rose Galuzzi has graciously offered to continue providing delicious and bountiful food choices. She is open to suggestions. Treasurer: Joe Cascio Presented the treasurer s report. His books are always open upon request. New Membership Officer: Rich Cohen Introduced 2 visitors & 7 new members were voted in. Robert and Brenda Courtney, Al Baker, Mike and Kathy Schnider, Madie Curtis, Mike and Janice Brady. Secretary We currently have 364 members. Remember to check your National Hog expiration date, as you must be in good standing with Mother Hog to be a member of the local chapter. Be thinking of What s your spark? What got you interested in riding a Harley? Remember this is a family friendly site. To access the website go to User: spacecoast Password: hog HOGline Head Road Captain Jim Glazer Remember, get out there and ride. Jerry: We would ask that the members volunteer for a committee to design a patch for the club along the lines of HABIT (Help a biker in trouble.) In instances where someone may break down, and you went home and got your trailer to haul their bike, things along those lines. Safety Officer: Charlie Braden We will have road captain training sometime in November. A group riding film will directly follow the meeting on Saturday August 9th at Palm Bay Harley Davidson.
