This is why we all endure the dog days of summer here in Florida. I for one will be riding every chance I can for the next few months. As usual Georgia has planned a full month of varied activities. I look forward to seeing you all out there riding with us. As I write this, many of you have been or are riding up to Biketoberfest, in Daytona. I hope you all had an outstanding time I know I plan too. I almost didn't make it. The night before the pin ride I heard a metallic rattle coming from my motor so I got to dealership at 7:30 AM Saturday morning, too early for service, but in time to wish all my friends a safe ride. As it turned out it was only my horn rattling. Please check your eblast, newsletter or HOG website for all the many activities the club has planned for the end of the year. Our next big event is our Christmas party, which is also our last major event of the year. So make sure to get your tickets as soon as possible. Tickets are limited and this will be one outstanding party. I look forward to seeing you all at our November meeting. This will be my last true story, so don't miss it! LOL. 3 Rick Orahood Jim Chaloux Well September was a very interesting month for sure. It started off with a cancelled ride due to weather, then 2 days later a full moon ride lead by Jim Glazar for Mexican food. Patriot s Day ride lead by our Tower of Sweetness with all his Glory I m sure was a heartfelt ride, filled with love of country and honor as only REO could accomplish the true patriot that he is. I m only sorry I couldn t be there. It is nice to see Mickey (cupcake) Goshen back in the lead position as he lead us on a pleasant Sunday ride. Shahmard found some crazy roads again this time with lots of construction on his day-off ride to the cape. Gary Corbett is still coming up with some nice rides, his latest was an overnighter to Mid-evil time in Kissimmee for a fantastic show and dinner. The feature ride of the month was #1 our own keynote event chaired by our very own Charlie Anderson and a very special THANK YOU to our sponsoring dealer for all of their support. Followed with another keynote ride to Orlando lead by Ed Crampton. And last but not least, a ride for Pizza, which is not always on our menus, but a great choice lead by non-other than Mr. Nick Galluzzi. Thank you RC s for the rides The 3 rd quarter ride schedule was a busy one we did 27 rides this quarter nice job Georgia Nelson thank you! 3 rd quarter ride statistics: Charlie Anderson takes 1 st place with 21 ride, the Cote s take 2 nd place with 20 ride and a new couple to the podium Bernie & Jane Cobb with 17 rides. Great job people. It was a close race for 1 st place most of the quarter between Charlie and the Cote s maybe Wayne s big heart is starting to show (maybe), NO CHARLIE just plain took it (that away). Some other interesting facts: Wayne & Kathy now have 22 sweep rides, the Kelly s better get riding now that they are back in town they are still at 11 sweeps and no longer in 2 nd place. Ray Lugo has taken that spot with 12 sweep rides. As for our lead riders statistics they have not changed to much as many more RC s are stepping up and taking more rides.. THANK YOU ALL!!!!! *Jim Glazar now has 11 lead rides (now that he has turned in all his sheets) thank you!! *Nick Galluzzi and Grover Schaffner have both had a full year so far with 9 leads. *Followed closely with 7 lead rides is Shahmard Hakimi. 6 Duct Tape Really Should Be Part of Your Riding Kit Grover Schaffner Yes, I did publish this last December, the December before that and I am tweaking it for this November. I always felt that most wind chill charts were inadequate for us bikers. I d like to thank to Wayne Thomas for the attached Wind Chill Chart. Now we can see why we get cold in this part of the country. We are lucky, in the winter we just change the way we dress and we can still ride. We focus on five things, boots, gloves, head cover, layers and wind proofing. Boots and gloves need to be comfortable, water proof and wind proof but not too tight. If they are so tight that they hinder circulation you will get cold. Remember that as your body cools, it shuts down circulation to the extremities (hands and feet) to stave off hypothermia. Hypothermia occurs when your core body temperature drops below the minimum temperature required for your body to operate. Hypothermia causes mild confusion, sluggish behavior, poor muscle coordination, and incoherent behavior. If you start feeling cold and can't decide if you should pull over, you are facing an early stage of hypothermia. Pull over immediately and get a hot chocolate (not a hot toddy)! 70% of your body heat can escape through your head so put your helmet on (I know you all wear your helmet). Hopefully it has a full face shield but if not, a scarf, mask, balaclava or combination of all these can go a long way to save face. Layers slow the rate at which our body loses heat. Layers are critical for riding in cold weather. The number of layers you'll need is based both on personal preference and the temperature outside. Wear enough so that when you stand next to your bike you feel comfortable Wind proofing keeps the wind from stealing our heat. Wind chill is your worst enemy in cold weather. The time you spend sealing all the air leaks pays dividends by reducing the number of layers and /or their thickness. Here is where you could use the duct tape. Exposed skin can suffer frostbite, so don't have any exposed skin! If you feel like your skin is being pricked by needles, frostbite is on its way and you need to do something immediately. Finally, ride safe, wear your helmet and remember to fasten the buckle.

7 By Ken Gordon, Historian Harley-Davidson Breaks 110 Years of Tradition with Liquid Cooling With the exception of Harley-Davidson's V-Rod, which departed from tradition by incorporating a Porsche-designed, liquid-cooled mill, Motor Company bikes have only featured oil and air-cooled engines... until now. Harley's new Twin-Cooled High Output Twin Cam 103 mill uses two radiators discreetly tucked into the fairings to feed a 50/50 water/ coolant mix into the engine's cylinder heads, enabling a higher compression ratio (10.1:1, versus 9.6:1), not to mention more consistent performance and thermal relief for riders when ambient temperatures rise. Coolant is circulated through a small pump positioned at the bottom of the bike's down tubes, and most of the system's plumbing is hidden between the top of the cylinder heads and the fuel tank. However, more crucial than the technical intricacies of Harley's "Precision Liquid Cooling Strategy" is the question of why they chose to break tradition on the occasion of their 110th anniversary. Contrary to rumors that regulatory restrictions are pushing motorcycle manufacturers to ditch oil and air cooling, Harley insists the move came in response to their extensive customer feedback program (dubbed "Project Rushmore"), which culled data from over 20 focus groups in the U.S. and Europe. Riders, it turns out, don't like crotch-melting heat (go figure), and cooling the cylinder heads (in much the same way that BMW's newest R1200GS does) enables a modicum of thermal management without requiring a giant radiator to be bolted ahead of the engine. Liquid-cooled heads are currently only available on the Electra Glide Ultra Classic Limited, Tri-Glide, and CVO Limited, and should shoppers choose to stick to strictly oil and air-cooled mills, they have the option of putting their dollars towards the standard Electra Glide Ultra Classic model. As for the future of liquid-cooling at Harley, company officials are treating their new engine like a noble experiment; in the unlikely event that the luddite minority will shun the idea of greater rider comfort, H-D insists they won't expand the technology across more bikes unless consumer reaction warrants it.
