I hope you had a great August and enjoyed a lot of riding. It has been a really HOT summer with a lot of rain. As usual Georgia planned a lot of great rides. Check out the Road Captain s article for specifics. And to think that with all of those rides and all that rain we didn t have to cancel a single ride. Of course, Georgia has another fabulous ride schedule planned for September. Let s hope the weather cools down and it rains a lot less. This month s overnight ride is to the Medieval Times dinner show in Kissimmee So bring your lances and battle axes to be prepared for a really fun time. September is the month of our Key Note Event to help raise money for the Haven House for Children in Brevard. Charley Anderson and his team have done as expected a fabulous job putting together a fun event which includes this year a golf outing, a first for Space Coast HOGs. I look forward to seeing every one of you at this important charity event. A fun time will be had by all and some money will be made for the kids. Another important event will take place at this month s club meeting as it will be the first of two months in which nominations for the four primary officers of the club will take place. There are a few of items that everyone needs to be aware of: 1. Before nominating a person you need to discuss your plans with the individual you plan on nominating to make certain that they wish to run. 2. The person being nominated must be present in the meeting at the time of the nominating to except the nomination. 3. Anyone being nominated for director must have served on a SCHOG board. I look forward with excitement to hear the names of our future leaders of Space Coast HOG. As always ride often, ride safe, and ride your HOG. We own Harleys, let s ride!! Bob Parker

Well our 3 rd quarter is well under way and I think the Cote s have said OK enough everyone else has had their chance and they have moved back into the lead so far for most rides, a slim lead but the lead, but it is early so let s see how it all plays out for the rest of the quarter. The month of July as usual was a wet one, but no rides got canceled. I think we all had enough right after our first ride which was to Finn s in Flagler beach. Luckily, I went north to Savannah for a preride right after lunch, I heard from many that it was quite a trip home. Fortunately everyone got home safe and sound; I was so glad to hear that. July was a very nice month s ride schedule, planned for us thanks to Georgia Nelson. We had a wide variety of places to see and eat at. Starting at Bella Luna for our full moon ride lead by Grover. A very pleasant breakfast at Disney of Vero lead by Shahmard. Rick Knutson took us to Sebastian Beach Inn for a day-off ride. Our 2 nd or 3 rd overnighter so far this year was a nice trip to Savannah Georgia for a 2 night, and for some, a 1 night stay. Also, if you didn t make that trip, Jim Glazar had a fantastic ride that Sunday for breakfast then to the Navy Seal Museum in Fort Pierce. Grover s 2 nd ride of the month was a brunch ride to Roberto s. And, last but not least, Wayne Cote finally was able to make his ride to the Breezeway in Sanford, which had been canceled about 4 times over the last year and a half. I know the food was well worth the wait. July we also held our 2 nd RC info meeting of the year and with a few new faces that showed up we should hopefully be well equipped with a good staff of RC s to end the year with. We will hold one more info meeting in the fall so anyone wishing to become a RC or just sit in and see what it s all about please, all are welcome. Be on the look-out in the eblast or at our chapter meetings for announcements. Some stats: as of August 1 st. Jim Glazar and Grover Schaffner both have 8 lead rides, Nick Galluzzi still at 7, Shahmard Hakimi with 4 leads, followed close by Georgia Nelson with 3 leads. Our sweep standings are as follows: Wayne/Kathy Cote now with 16 sweep rides, Ray Lugo at 10, Howard Miller with 9, Rick Knutson and Shahmard both with 5 sweeps. Again, watch the calendar close as we have some great rides coming up in the months to come. So let s ride and have some fun to get us through the rest of the year! Promise COOLER weather is not too far away now. Thanks to all of our RC s for your support and dedication to getting us all their safe!!!!

Electrical Storms - Riding out from under them could be a big mistake You are out in the country and an electrical storm blows in. There is no shelter for a hundred miles. Should you ride out the storm? If not, what should you do? You may have heard that if a lightning bolt hits a car the occupants are safe because the car is riding on rubber tires, etc. Actually, this is almost true! So long as the occupants stay away from anything metal they will more than likely survive a lightning hit without any injury whatever. What protects occupants of a cage is not just their rubber tires, but also the fact that they are enclosed in a metal container. If a lightning bolt hits the surface of the car it spreads around the occupants, NOT THROUGH THEM, and goes to ground. A lightning bolt that hits you or your motorcycle is a different matter entirely. Though rubber is a pretty good insulator at the normal voltage levels we humans deal with, it is not very effective against the voltage in a lightning bolt. The master fuse on your bike handles about 30 amps before it blows. 30 amps can easily kill you because it disrupts your heart's electrical system and the heart then simply stops working. Your heart doesn't stand a chance against a lightning bolt. An average lightning bolt produces a current of about 20,000 amps. If you are out in the open on your bike when lightning flashes begin, and if you can hear the thunder caused by those flashes in less than three seconds from when you see the flash, it's time to stop your bike and get off it. Immediately find low ground, but NOT under a single or small group of trees. Squat on the ground with your legs together, head lower than back, but NOT touching the ground. Do NOT lay on the ground. LET YOUR CLOTHES GET WET!!! In this way, if you are hit the majority of the electricity will follow the moisture of your wet clothes around your body. Do not get up until thunder following a lightning flash is AT LEAST five seconds after the flash. Which means the lightning struck more than 1 mile away. If there are more than 5 seconds between the lightning flashes and your hearing that thunder, head for shelter. This is the only time trying to ride out from under an electrical storm makes any sense. The best shelter, of course, is a hard covered surface connected to ground with metal. Get under it and wait out the storm. Finally, ride safe, wear your helmet and remember to fasten the buckle.

By Ken Gordon, Historian DOIN TIME CHOPPER - OLD SCHOOL CHOPPER WITH A NEW THEME The Al Paquette Ministry was started in Feb. of 2000 by Sharon & Al Paquette. They have been in prison ministry since Sharon & Al have been together since In 1985 Al was called out of the fast paced biker lifestyle and freed from his addictions overnight. They both went through a healing process that brought them to the start of an exciting journey. Since 1986 they have served in many different ministries and have helped coordinate motorcycles to go into prisons all over Florida. Here s the story (in Al s words) behind the bike: Back in Feb. of 2005 I was in a prison with my motorcycle by my side. I watched as an inmate inspected every piece of my Harley Ultra Classic. After an hour I thought, "What if I had a bike with prison stuff on it." That was all it took. I went to see my good friend (since '73') Brian Dady at the Motorcycle Clinic in Kissimmee, FL. I told him about my idea of a prison theme chopper. I no sooner said that when someone walked into his shop with a v-twin for sale. The rest is history. The 'DOIN TIME' chopper was on her way. I thank Brian for his confidence and many hours of fabrication to make this dream bike a reality. He really is a doctor for motorcycles. This chopper is dedicated to all men and women Doin Time. Every allen head bolt cover is a bullet shell that was fired at a prison rifle range. The handcuff fender struts are authentic Peerless handcuffs. The razor wire adorning the back fender comes from a prison. The license plate bracket is a door handle from a prison door. The jail house keys are from a jail in Orlando. There are many more prison/jail themed features to see and much more to read about the work and ministry at: Words and photos used by permission from Al Paquette Ministry.

Due to internet problems while creating the page for the pictures I was unable to retrieve them from the SCJOG web site. Thanks to Donna Miller I was able to get these pictures from the July Meeting. Sorry for any inconvenience. Joyce
