2 President s Message April showers bring May flowers. That old saying is so true this year. Our gardens have never looked better! So let s celebrate spring with a PICNIC! Our annual year-end celebration will be held on Tuesday, May 22 nd at the Trawick Pavilion at Lake Grapevine. You can count on an overwhelming variety of food, so bring your appetite along with your best salad or dessert to share. We will award scholarships, install officers, and enjoy visiting with friends, some of whom we may not see again until fall. If you have not yet renewed your membership for , the Membership team will be on hand to assist you. Remember, you must renew by June 1 st to be included in the yearbook which is compiled and printed during the summer months. For additional information regarding the Picnic, please see page 6 of this newsletter. A map to Trawick Pavilion can be found on page 10. It s also the time of year for awards, so please join me in congratulating our winners from Flowercade (pages 5 and 9) and Texas Garden Clubs, Inc. (page 8). Thank you for your support during my first year as President. I look forward to seeing you at the Picnic and, of course, in September when we begin another year of programming, community service, and FUN! 5 Flowercade 2018 Results Despite the blustery weather outside, 32 GGC members were smokin hot as they won big at Flowercade 2018! Karen Rice won the Botanical Arts Award, the highest award in competition, for her miniature succulent garden. And the Award of Merit, the second highest award in competition, was presented to three of our members Barbara Atkins, Peggy Harris, and Karen Rice. In Division I, Horticulture, of 75 specimen entries, GGC members won 42 blue ribbons, 19 red ribbons, six yellow ribbons, and eight white ribbons. In Division II, Design, two blue ribbons and two honorable mentions were awarded to GGC members. Karen Rice With twenty photography entries, GGC members took home twelve blue ribbons and eight red ribbons. And Peggy Harris was awarded a ribbon from the American Iris Society in the category of Best of Yellow Iris. 6 Wall-Farrar Trail Tidy-Up Please plan to join us for the bi-monthly Wall-Farrar Trail Tidy-Up on Monday, May 21 st. Come walk with us and help canvass the trail for trash. We will meet in the Church at the Cross parking lot at 9:00 A.M. The summer Tidy-Up date will be July 23 rd so mark your calendar and plan to join us then as well! Contact Karen Rice for details. submitted by Karen Rice Spring Picnic It s almost here the GGC Spring Picnic is Tuesday, May 22 nd! Our theme this year is Land that I Love and to tie in with our theme, please try to wear an article of clothing that represents your hometown, state, or country. (Of course, red, white, and blue is AL- WAYS appropriate!) We will gather at Lake Grapevine s Trawick Pavilion at 10:30 A.M. and the picnic lunch will begin at 11:00 A.M. Bring your salad or dessert (you remember what you signed up to bring, right?) and serving utensil(s) as needed. Please label your dish or bowl and your utensil(s). Bring a copy of your recipe, too, so Barb Atkins can include it in our cookbook. After we eat our fill, we will install our new officers and award scholarships. Guests are welcome, however if you are bringing a guest, please let Lyn Argenbright know. And if you haven t signed up yet, it s not too late! You can sign up on the website until May 18 th. 7 Gardeners on the Go Lavender Ridge Farms, Gainesville Celebrate National Garden Week with a trip to Lavender Ridge Farms on Thursday, June 7 th. We will carpool to Gainesville for a 10:00 A.M. tour of the farm which will include a bouquet of lavender and a glass of lavender lemonade. Following the one-hour tour, we will have lunch on the screened porch of the farmhouse or on the lawn under the shade trees. Lunch will consist of a salad trio of honey lavender chicken salad, garden salad, and dilled potato salad, a beverage, and lavender cheesecake for dessert. The cost of this trip is $26.00, which includes the tour and lunch. And as always, we ask that you pay your driver for gas. As soon as we return from the summer break, we will begin gearing up for Grapevine s 21st Annual Butterfly Flutterby. This award-winning event celebrating the migrating monarch will be held on Saturday, October 20 th. More and more visitors attend this event every year and many volunteers are needed to make it a success. You can sign up to participate on the GGC website or contact Cindy Miller or Harriet Perrello directly (our contact information is in the yearbook). Just let us know where your interests lie and we ll see where you can fit in. New members, this event is a great way to meet people. Join us for the fun! Harriet Perrello and Cindy Miller BFFB Co-Chairs The Envelope, Please! Have you ever wondered how a company gets onto Fortune s 100 Best Companies to Work For list? Or how the City of Grapevine won the 2018 Voluntary Service Award, Organization at the Texas Recreation & Park Society recently? Someone followed all the rules and wrote an award application, including a lengthy essay and documentation of all sorts. The same process applies to the awards that GGC wins each year. We write an essay and include as many colorful, fun photos as possible to help wow the judges. In essence, we brag. The applications are first judged at the district level, then go on to the state level, May 22,

8 and some go on to the national level. The district consists of 23 counties and 47 clubs, and there are ten districts in the state. At the Texas Garden Clubs state convention in April, GGC won eight STATE FIRST PLACE awards, one citation which is the equivalent of first place, and an award of appreciation for donations. In the last three years, GGC has won an impressive number of national awards: three in 2016, five in 2015, and five in Considering that there are over 5,000 garden clubs nationwide, that s quite impressive! This year we won t hear how we did on the national level until early June. So bragging helps, but winning awards wouldn t be possible without an active club whose members work harmoniously together. Visuals at this intersection would be PDQ Shamrock and Fox Rental (Traffic light) Traveling NORTH on N. DOVE RD, you will come to a traffic light when the road changes names & becomes DOVE LOOP RD. Just keep traveling north (straight do not turn) until you reach OAK GROVE LOOP. [You will have driven 1.6 mi] RIGHT onto OAK GROVE LOOP N. [0.5 mi] LEFT onto DARREN G.
