Box 502, Silverdale, WA Colwood Hope B, LC, W It s a new year and with that comes hope for a successful dahlia season, filled with great flowers, fun events, successful shows and time spent with our dahlia friends and family. The 2017 Holiday Party was a fun-filled affair. There were several new members attending and the food, as always, was amazing. The prime rib, ham, and delicious side dishes left everyone stuffed. The gift exchange did not disappoint either-- since gifts can change hands several times, it s interesting to see who winds up with what. Thanks to Wendy and Drew for securing the awesome venue and for heading up the setup of the party. This month s program will be on the ADS new introductions. Drew has ordered the CD, and will give the presentation of the new dahlias. Members always have many opinions as to the merits of the various new cultivars, whether they will become winners or not, and if the premium paid for them is worth the gamble. Come and share your thoughts! We will also be updating the mentor list at the January meeting. New members to the KCDS are given an information package that includes a list of seasoned members willing to act as mentors. Our Co-President, Eric Anderson, has volunteered to put his name on the new list and looks forward to answering questions and sharing information on how to grow and show dahlias. A few more people are needed for this list, so please consider adding your name. Have you paid your 2018 KCDS dues? Dues are $10.00 for single membership or $15.00 for family. ADS & FNWDG membership dues can be paid at the same time. Drew is our membership POC and will be available to answer any questions and take your dues for KCDS, ADS & FNWDG. The Northwest Flower and Garden Show will take place February 7th-11th at the Seattle Convention Center. There are spectacular show gardens, free seminars and vendors selling garden related tools and decorating accessories. Several local commercial dahlia vendors are there also, so it s a great time to start purchasing some of the new varieties you have had your eye on, without paying for shipping. Provide the completed KCDS reimbursement form, together with receipts, to our Treasurer. A motion was approved to sponsor $ in awards at the 2020 ADS National Show. The Holiday Party was a great success and several new members attended. The 2018 KCDS show will be held at the Kitsap Pavilion, at the price of the President s Hall. Paid table setup was discussed and the decision is TBD. Any donated tubers for the annual tuber sale must have their names written on them. Also, tuber names and the approximate number to be donated must be reported to Dan and Kim by March 15th so that labels can be made. Madeline West will contact the ADS again to make sure they have her listed as the new KCDS representative. A motion was approved to drop the suggestion of a special early member s only tuber sale. Jason Scott is tentatively scheduled to give the February presentation on dahlias and trilliums. A suggestion was made to send a contact card out to members that have not been to meetings for a while. A new expense reimbursement form has been approved by the Board and will be included in the newsletter. 2

3 CLUB GARDENS We are planning the club gardens for 2018 and need your help to determine what the club should plant in our three gardens located in Silverdale, Bremerton and Port Gamble. The tuber selection process is important, as what we select now will ultimately help provide the operating funds for the following year. The selection also draws interest in our club, together with showcasing the varieties of dahlias that will be available to the public at our annual tuber sale. As diverse as the dahlia varieties are, so are the reasons we grow them. We want to include varieties in the club gardens that will intrigue and interest gardeners, whether they grow dahlias for cut flowers, show flowers, or just beautiful flowers to enjoy in their landscape. The varieties should also be good tuber producers if possible so the club can get as great a return on our investment as possible. As you plan your dahlia planting lists for 2018, please also consider what we should plant as a club. Bring your suggestions to the January meeting or them to us at kcdsnewsletter@comcast.net. This year Bob (with Eric s help) will lead the Silverdale gardens; Debbie and Allyn will lead the Bremerton gardens; and Yvonne will lead the Port Gamble gardens. These are the club gardens, however, so the help and participation of all members is encouraged and greatly appreciated.
