What a ride. I can truly say I have enjoyed serving as your president this year. I would be happy to do it again next year if you will allow me to do it. We are coming to the close of the dahlia year with only one meeting left. The October meeting will consist of a talk on digging, dividing and storing tubers. There will also be an opportunity for some hands on experience at dividing. We will have our annual elections. Several people have indicated they will not be available to serve in certain positions next year. We will be looking for people to fill the positions of Bulletin editor, secretary, treasurer and vice president. If you are willing to serve in any of these positions, please let myself or one of the executive know. We will also be voting on the constitution. The executive has worked hard at revising the current constitution which had not been revised in a long time and was badly out of date. By this time you should have received your copy. Please read it carefully and come prepared to vote on it at the next meeting. It needs a two thirds (2/3) majority vote to pass. The VanDusen Harvest Festival is taking place on Saturday, September 29. We have purchased a table at this event and will be promoting the club as well as selling cut flowers. Betty is leading the charge so please let her know if you can volunteer to help man the table or provide flowers. So, there you have it. The weather will soon turn wet and cold and we will be forced to lift our tubers and put them to rest for another year. We can then turn to searching the Internet for new tubers we want to purchase and dreaming about starting the season all over again. The VDS meets on the 3rd Wednesday of every month, except January, November and December, in the Floral Hall at the VanDusen Botanical Gardens at 7:30 PM. Visitors are Welcome. Our website is

Bulletin 5 September October 2012 Vancouver Dahlia Society Page 4 Dahlia Bread Recipe Posted on ovember 25, 2012 by bloubaugh (Lobaugh s Dahlias) Want something to do with the dahlia tubers that do not have eyes? Make bread! In the fall when we cut up tubers to store for the winter we save the larger tubers without a growing eye for making dahlia bread. It is best to grind up the peeled tubers just before you add them to the bread mixture. Dahlia bread stores well in the freezer. Ingredients: 2 eggs 1 cup of sugar (1 cup Sugar Twin for sugar free) 1 1/2 tsp. Vanilla 1/2 cup cooking oil. Mix well then add 1 1/2 cups unsifted flour 1/2 tsp. Baking Powder 1/2 tsp. Salt 1/2 tsp. Baking Soda 1 1/2 tsp. Cinnamon. Mix well then fold in; 1 cup ground dahlia tubers (peel first) 1/2 cup chopped nut 1/2 cup mini-chocolate chips. Pour into a greased loaf pan and bake at 350 degrees for about 1 hour or less for large loaf pan. It is done when toothpick comes out clean. Small pans may be used instead and bake in minutes. This amount of batter makes 2 or 3 small loaves. The 2013 Dahlia Calendar Now Available The calendars should be available for sale at the October meeting, and of course, until the end of the year. You can call me at or themcnabbs@telus.net and I will arrange to get them to you. The cost is the same as last year $12.00 each (plus any applicable postage)....tina McNabb

Bulletin 5 September October 2012 Vancouver Dahlia Society Page 5 GET THOSE CAMERAS OUT! This is the perfect time to take pictures of your blooms for the tuber sale next year. Try to photograph all the ones you expect to be selling next April. Try and take the photo when the bloom is at its peak, meaning not blown or too immature. You can the digital files to me at themcnabbs@telus.net or pop them on a DVD. Remember, the varieties that have a picture sell faster than those that don t.. 6 Bulletin 5 September October 2012 Vancouver Dahlia Society Page 6 VANCOUVER DAHLIA SOCIETY TEACHING DAY The Vancouver Dahlia Club Teaching Day took place on Saturday, August 18, By all accounts, it was a great success. We met at the home of Richard and Jennifer Zuk. There were five first time exhibitors present, four from our club and one from the Fraser Valley Dahlia Club. Each new exhibitor was paired up with an experienced mentor who would be available to guide them through the day. We began the day by taking a tour of the garden to talk about disbudding and preparing the blooms for cutting. We then went on to filling cans with wob (crushed styrophoam) used to keep the blooms upright in the exhibition containers. Once the cans were filled, there was a session on staging single blooms followed by a triple bloom staging presentation. For lunch, we had a wonderful spread prepared by Richard and Jennifer. The rest of the time was spent talking about clerking and filling out tags, followed by a presentation of how to make a basket and finally a demonstration of a bowl of dahlias. By 3 pm, some of us were suffering from information overload but I am sure everyone picked up something they could use, even those who had exhibited before. I am including a few pictures of some of the participants during lunch for you to enjoy. Peter Krueger Vittorio and his Ladies Vera and her Basket Norm and Jennifer

Bulletin 5 September October 2012 Vancouver Dahlia Society Page ational Show The 2012 ADS National Show was held on Labour Day weekend in Portland, Oregon. Several members of the Vancouver Dahlia Society and the Fraser Valley Dahlia Society attended. The show was spectacular with blooms from as far away as New York. Frank and I took a few entries down, got through the border with no problem, and were able to get a few blue ribbons. We also took photographs and I made a couple of arrangements. The competition was stiff! Connie Young Davis won best in show with a bloom of Trengrove Millennium. I estimate that there were about 6000 blooms and over 100 floral art entries. We went on a tour to Swan Island Dahlia Farm, where there were over 40 acres of dahlias. It was an awesome sight to see. We finished off the trip with a quick side trip to the Oregon coast with empty vases and bits of floral art rattling around in the back of our vehicle. The next national show in our area will be in Tacoma in I can hardly wait. Here are a few photos to enjoy from the show (and the Oregon coast)...betty Girard ADS SHOW 2012 SWAN ISLAND DAHLIAS SWAN ISLAND DAHLIAS OREGON COAST 2012

Bulletin 5 September October 2012 Vancouver Dahlia Society Page 8 Wenatchee Dahlia Show - Tina McNabb Doug and I, along with Doug and Diana Youngson attended the North Central Washington Dahlia Society Dahlia Show in Wenatchee (that's a mouth full). They are a fairly new club to join the Federation and this was only their third show. We didn't know what to expect, especially with the wildfires there. We had heard the air quality was rated extreme, but we were assured that the show was indoors in a mall and they would supply us all with face masks, so thought what the heck. It was a beautiful drive through Steven's Pass no sign of smoke until we reached Leavenworth and as we entered into Wenatchee the smell was very strong and there was quite a haze. Doug and Diana brought down 23 entries. We didn't bring any blooms but were already to help judge. We got up early and headed over to mall to see some familiar faces, Bob and Terry Schroeder, the Parshalls, Art and Barb Wuerth and a couple others from the coast. We were greeted by Linda Holmes-Cook who made us feel right at home. The NCWDS does not have any judges so they were quite happy to see us. While watching the exhibitors hurrying to put in their entries we were treated to a very nice array of home baked goodies and coffee. There were some pretty nice blooms, but we were asked to overlook any sprinkling of ash, although I didn't see any. There were just under 400 blooms in the entire show so judging went pretty fast. The Best of Show went to Dick and Danielle Parshall for an A size white semi cactus seedling. Well deserved. After that we had a lovely lunch then it was off shopping since we were in a mall. Any outdoor activity was out of the question although there is a lot to see in and around the area. Later we all went to the clubhouse at a member's townhouse complex where we had dinner, yes they fed us again. We had a few drinks, good food and good conversation. You couldn't ask for better hospitality. It was a great little getaway to end the dahlia season and we are definitely going again next year. So think about attending next year and let's give our support to help make their show an even bigger success. Mike Cattin, NCWDS member Some winning blooms Bob Schroeder s basket

Bulletin 5 September October 2012 Vancouver Dahlia Society Page 9 Wenatchee Dahlia Club - Linda Holmes-Cook The NCWDS was formed in Our first federation show was in 2010, although we held ADS shows or exhibitions every fall from 2005 through Prior to 2010, we usually had between 100 and 200 entries, with 5 or fewer judges. It would often take the judges all day to get through all the entries. We really didn't have a legitimate seedling bench until Judges who often participated in our shows, besides my dad (Tony DeRooy) were Dick Williams, Bernie Wilson, Bill Bonneywell, Tom and Twyla Ball. MESSAGE FROM THE BULLETIN EDITOR - ROBIN BLACKMORE Hi Everyone Due to increasing family matters, this will be my last bulletin for the Vancouver Dahlia Society. I don t know where the last 6 years have gone. I know your next Bulletin Editor will have lots of ideas and can count on the continued support of the club members. Thank you all for your support and see you at the General Meetings. If you could only save one dahlia this winter - which would it be? Picture a desperate situation - you have a minute to decide which dahlia you are going to overwinter. You have time to only dig one and all others will be lost forever! Which would it be? Your sentimental favourite or the greatest tuber maker ever? A great seedling parent or the one that cost you the most money at the last tuber sale? Please send your reply to Betty at vdsmembership@telus.net with which tuber you would pick and why. This has to be a split second decision, no second guessing. I will compile the answers for the first bulletin of 2013.
