Jim Tinney is on the mend and has started walking. He is now able to have visitors but check before you go to make sure he hasn't been discharged. David Ferres has a specialist appointment with a Neurologist in Melbourne after Easter and we wish him well. Jean Stuart s finger is on the mend but has a long way to go for complete recovery. John and Dawn Anderson are recovering. We wish them both well. Please keep in mind that when we are sick or feeling unwell, we all appreciate a friendly Rotarian face to come calling. 5 President s Report I trust that all of you had a great Easter Holiday Weekend. Last Tuesday John Cullen, Hon Treasurer of RSL gave an interesting insight into the history and workings of the RSL. The focus for the rest of April and May will be the Anzac Day Schools Service on Thursday 20 th April 2017, the family fun day at Winchelsea on Saturday 6 th May 2017, the Vocational Awards night on Tuesday 9 th May and the Melinda (Schneider) Does Doris Concert on Saturday 20 th May Our Family Fun Day at Lou & Lyn Davies Winchelsea farm is fast approaching, Please register quickly with Ross Taylor. Let us have a lot of fun. The Vocational Awards Committee met and finalized the selection of the Awardees for the Pride of Workmanship, Vocational Excellence Emergency services and the Junior Citizenship Awards The Awards Night, with all your support, should be a great night. I appeal to members to get the Concert tickets quickly from Brian McDaid for sale. We need to sell about 300 tickets to break even. What we really need to do is we have got to fill the hall. So, friends, do your part for your club and your community. Thank you to those who have already started working on the sales. If you want to see our winning costume and hear about the Conference, be sure to attend the meeting on this Tuesday 18 th April PE Stephen Bode needs a few of you members to put your hands up as he has three vacancies for Directors on the Board and a couple of Chairs to fill for the Rotary Year Ruth Bode s wrist injury is fast healing, as is Jean s finger. Chairman s Report The guest speaker last week was John Cullen, a Vietnam Vet. John has been a member of the RSL for 47 years and for the last 12 years has been the State Honorary Treasurer.

The RSL was formed in 1916 to provide programs for the well-being, care, compensation and commemoration of serving and ex-service Defence Force members and their dependents.

6 Chairman s Report The guest speaker last week was John Cullen, a Vietnam Vet. John has been a member of the RSL for 47 years and for the last 12 years has been the State Honorary Treasurer. John spoke about the history of the RSL. The RSL was formed in 1916 to provide programs for the well-being, care, compensation and commemoration of serving and ex-service Defence Force members and their dependents. The trigger for the formation of the RSL was the large number of causalities in World War I from battles on the western front starting in John named many of these battles and the number of Australian causalities. He then named two soldiers from World War I that he obviously held in high regard. They were Sir John Monash and Albert Jacka. He detailed their World War I service. He also stated that they were both responsible for the building of the Shrine of Remembrance on the hill in Kings Domain. At the time, there was much controversy as to where the shrine should be built (and its design) it opened in John also mentioned battles to our near north during World War II. The fall of Singapore and the capture of prisoners of war who worked on the Burma railway and the notorious hell fire pass, the bombing of Darwin, the Coral Sea Battle and the Kokoda campaign. Today the RSL consists of about 170,000 members Australia wide, over 60,000 are in the state of Victoria. There are 282 sub branches in Victoria of which 56 have a gaming licence, 68 have a full liquor licence and there are 138 traditional branches. The RSL also raises funds mainly through the sale of Anzac Day badges and Remembrance Day poppies. The local branch keeps 50% of the proceeds. The money raised is spent on welfare including, treating the demons of their service, payment of utility bills, school expenses, medical expenses, motorised scooters, mowing, gardening and legal aid. 7 Visit to Lyn and Lou Davies farm at Winchelsea Saturday, 6 th May 2017 Arrangements are being made to visit Lyn and Lou Davies farm at Winchelsea on Saturday 6 th of May. We are organising a bus for the trip, so could you please advise if you plan to travel as a group by bus or make your own travel arrangements. The bus will depart from and return to the Dorset Gardens Hotel. Lyn and Lou Davies will provide a BBQ lunch so the only expense for members on the day will be the cost of the bus. Further details about departure time etc. will be advised closer to the date. Those of you who visited the farm two years ago will remember the great time we had. Sometimes we arrived at the bottom of the mountain right side up; at others, after long leaps over "thank-you-marms" and slews at curves, we were spilled along the road, a jumble of excited laughing boys. No mountain road was complete in my day without its "thank-you-marms". When tired farm horses drawing heavily loaded wagons up the mountains needed rest and breathing spells, they could relieve themselves of strain by pulling over a "thank-you-marm" to the level spot in the road on the up-hill side. There was always a "thank-you-marm" at the watering tough half way up the mountain side where horses could rest an extra long time and drink their fill of the cold, sparkling spring water contained in a trough made from a log hewn out to fit the needs. On hot summer days watering troughs and "thankyou-marms" were to tired farm horses previews of Heaven.

9 When coming "lickety-split down a mountainside in a buckboard or buggy with your sweetheart by your side, if you do not slow up when you see a "thank-you-marm" before you, you and your sweetheart will find yourselves thrown high in the air. In this event if you are born and bred Vermonters, you will, as you straighten your hats on your heads, ejaculate, "Thank-you-marm". To foreigners this may seem a very silly piece of business and easily avoidable, but to Vermonters of my time those words would come out to the accompaniment of uproarious laughter, in spite of all we could do. "Thank-you-marms" served also another purpose dear to the hearts of boys; in fact, we never could have gotten along without them in the winter time. When "Sabe's" Hill, short for Sabin's Hill, was coated with ice, it was the sportiest hill by far in our part of the valley. Its descent was long and steep and it was abundantly supplied with "thankyou-marms, one of which was glorious indeed. Our sleds were no high spindly affairs such as were used by girls or sissified boys. They were built from rock maple, braced and riveted like battleships. They were provided with runners made from hard, round steel which gave them springiness as well as endurance. At no point did these marvelous creations stand more than six inches above the hard packed snow. It was a sight to see a daring and skillful coaster take off from the top of a hill. He would grasp his sled by the seat, one hand forward, the other aft. He would then run briskly forward to the brink of the hill to gain momentum and then spring high into the air carrying his sled with him. While still in the air he would stage an amazing contortion, and when the runners landed on the ice the rider would be seen lying securely on his left thigh, his right foot dangling like a rudder on the rear, his hands unchanged in position, his shoulders crouched low with his head between the runners almost skimming the ground. Who is that taking off? By crackeyl it's wild Bill Rutherford on his homemade sled. He is flying like a bullet toward the big "thank-you-marm" opposite Martin Williams' house. Up he goes high into the air. "Betcher he jumped forty feet". "Now he's past the cheese factory; now he's out of sight". Well, that is one thing "thank-you-marms" are good for. Beside giving tired horses a chance for breathing spells, they give little boys a chance to see daring coasters at their glorious best. If neither skating nor coasting conditions were such as to appeal to us, mountain climbing was in order, or leaps from cliffs into deep banks of snow. High up we discovered especially fine views of my beautiful valley in its white blanket of snow and of other mountains far beyond. Sometimes we climbed over the top of a mountain and down into an unfamiliar valley; exploration was the charm of mountain climbing through deep snows; we found ourselves in new, thrilling and fanciful worlds.
