3 President s Report During the last 7 days, John Van Holsteyn and I have attended a membership seminar for the district. A full report is available elsewhere in the Chronicle. We also had a joint meeting with the Lions Club representatives and Michelle from Rotaract to start planning a major fundraiser for Croydon Special Development School. A decision was made for a March Trivia Night to be held at the Dorset Gardens. Lots of ideas were canvassed, and the next meeting is scheduled for November Matthew the school principal was hugely appreciative. Also on the school front, I took possession of the donated trailer which we will, on generation of books of tickets, furiously proceed. Both Lions and Rotary will be selling raffle tickets for $5 each. It is interesting to note that 2 other local Clubs have already done this with results of $13,000 and $10,000. With a 6 week window, all club members are invited to help achieve a good result. A very comprehensive program planning night with Jan Schipper, Glen Lowther and myself involved, has largely mapped out our program until Christmas. Our Club, through Richard, can now actively promote forthcoming events. Next week we welcome Cormack McCarthy representing Maroondah City Council with plans for the new activity area with which we are involved. That s it for this week. David Ferres President

4 Membership Meeting Here are some of the points raised at Membership meeting 30 Aug The announcement was made that Rotary will undertake four weeks of TV and media advertising, the first week starting on 9 September. Members were totally surprised and criticised district leadership for not communicating to the clubs, as these are the ones that will have to convert the listeners and readers to members! Although the advertising costs are substantial, about two thirds of the total has been donated. This is to be repeated early 2014 and also later around the International Conference time. District 9810 has set a net target of 3% growth in membership each year over the next three years and beyond. The two driving principles are "innovation" and "flexibility". Clubs are encouraged to try out new ideas, and consider strategic partnerships, something that Croydon Rotary has started with Lions and Rotoract, for example. The prime driver of this is very, very simple. Lots of potential members only need to be asked to join to make that step. Leadership is about a mindset, which means that people who would like to join Rotary do not necessarily have to be leaders in their occupational field. One successful club targeted a group of leading women in the community as prospective members. These were pre checked to facilitate the enrolment and induction process. A relatively new concept called SATELLITE CLUB is at this moment being established in Wantirna area. The existing Wantirna Rotary Club is helping Tony Harrison, a former Rotarian establish this satellite club. He is aiming to start the club with close to 80 members. The club is thinking big projects, big fundraising and will not consider sausage sizzles. The question was asked whether this would impact the other clubs in the immediate area, 3 of which have less than 20 members. The answer was that the newly recreated club was catering to a different demographic. Clubs were encouraged to be inclusive to their new members by inviting them to take part in their social conversations and involve them in the running of the club. 5 Croydon Special Developmental School On June the 18th our guest speaker on the night was Matthew Harris who has been the Principal of Croydon Special Developmental School for nearly two years. The School needed some financial assistance to meet their ever increasing expectations and demands. Croydon Lions and the Rotary Club of Croydon have joined together in a fundraising exercise which will be the first of hopefully of many. Pictured is our first project, the raffle of a superb trailer from Michael's Trailers in Healesville. With the goodies on board the raffle prize will be in excess of $ Tickets at $5.00 will be on sale from next week and the trailer will be on display at Arndale Lotto at the Arndale Shopping Centre Mt Dandenong Road Croydon. The trailer will be available for anyone to expose it for the promotion of the sale of raffle tickets. The Raffle will be drawn on the 17 th of October at the Radio Eastern 98.1 studios in Hewish Road Croydon at 6.45 p.m. This is a short and sweet Raffle prior to our main Raffle in Nov/ Dec. 6 Croydon Rotary and the Media HEY PAT!!! WE ARE GOING TO BE ON THE TELLY On Saturday the 24 th of August Brian McDaid, John Gander, Brianna Ricci, Christina Gleeson and our exchange student Johanna Stoh attended the local TV studio of channel 31 and presented some aspects of our Rotary club in an interview with TV presenter Bill Page. This program will go to air on Monday 9th September at 9am on Channel 44, but don't worry if you have to work and will miss the show, Brian has purchased a CD for the entertainment of the members. If you feel that you have a story that will be newsworthy for Channel 31 share it and send an to pr/communications@rotarycroydon.org.au. John Gander Box Hill Institute Timor Leste Refuge: Partners Night. Marlon Young-Healy (carpentry apprentice) and his wife Belinda were accompanied by Sharon Griffiths Executive Manager, Academic Special Projects Box Hill Institute. somerotary Marlon recently went to Timor Leste with a Team from the Box Hill Institute combined with some Rotary members and worked on a Female Refuge project. His presentation verbally and his power point presentation was excellent. Our Chair Brian McDaid who helped assist in the co-ordination of the project was quite impressed in Marlon s presentation. 7 The Crocodile Pool at Lorella Springs. Hello to all the Chronicle readers. Since our last update Pat and I have travelled from Karumba on the Gulf of Carpentaria to Kadadu in the NT. This was an interesting exercise travelling along the Savannah Way which takes one first along the southern side of the Gulf and then up the western side to Borroloola and Roper Bar before turning west to meet the Stuart Highway at Mataranka. Along the way we deviated a little off the Savannah Way to visit Lawn Hill NP and Adel's Grove. Both share a part in th history of the NT due to the permanent water supply. Kingfisher Camp, a mustering camp associated with Bowthorn Station located on a beautiful water hole which is a part of the Nicholson River when it is

8 flowing. Then to King Ash Bay, another fishing camp similar to Karumba, except King Ash Bay is located 30 km by boat along a river to get to the Gulf. After King Ash Bay we spent a couple of days at Lorella Springs. Lorella Springs was once a cattle station covering some 1,000 square miles, with 20 km of Gulf coastline as a border. It is now a wilderness camp with lots of opportunities open to 4 x4 drivers looking for a challenge. Whilst the springs and many swimming pools were still beautiful it is now the end of the season and almost everything is starting to dry up. The daytime temperatures here were in the mid to high 30's so a soak in a hot spring and a beer at the end of the day was most welcome to remove the dust and to get things back on an even keel. A quick visit to Southern Lost City, where erosion over time has left a rock formation that resembles the buildings in a city. It is not unlike Bryce Canyon for those who have visited the canyon in Utah. From here we visited Katherine and took a boat ride on the Katherine Gorge. Kakadu is also showing many signs that the next wet season is due with Jim Jim Falls and the Twin Falls are both dry. However, it is still possible to find beautiful places where the water is still flowing, the vegetation lush and green, but badly in need of a wash to remove all the accumulated dust. The whole place must be transformed after the first rain for the wet season. After we leave Kakadu we are heading off to Darwin for a couple of days prior to turning south and heading for home. 10 CROCODILE ROCKET: THE ELTON JOHN IMPRESSIONIST Australia's own Crocodile Rocket was born to be Elton John but never got the job! Crocodile Rocket has been described as one of the world's most convincing and entertaining Elton John impersonators. In a career spanning nearly 20 years, Croc has performed all over the world. He's played for revelers in St Tropez (France), Royal Wedding watchers at the Australian Club, countless luxury Cruise ship crowds and for a Proms audience accompanied by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Crocodile Rocket's alter ego Brenton Edgecombe learned his first Elton John song at the age of nine. He s a conservatorium trained musician and winner of five Australian Entertainment Industry MO Awards. Yes, we have our first Concert lined up. Fortunately for us, Brenton was not out on a Cruise Ship on our appointed date with Yarra Valley Grammar. Some one has been kind to us! We have 895 seats to fill on the night. This should be one of our highlights for the year. Spread the word, this will be an exciting night for all ages. More information will be following in the near future after the next Board Meeting.
