5 SCA DEMO: 16th - 17th April, Ironfest (Lithgow) Hi everyone. Ironfest at Lithgow is coming up fast! This year it is 16th and 17th of April. Anybody interested in participating this year, could you please respond to this message or PM me? Ironfest is always a fun event and SCA members who wish to participate need to get put on the participants' list for free entry (normally $40 for a day). Participation duties include dressing in speccy garb, helping out in the stand for a very brief time and wandering around in garb or armour while checking out other medieval groups, jousters, sci-fi stuff, black powder reenactors, WW2 memorabilia, blacksmiths, bellydancers, steampunks and more. I would really love to have as many people able to armour up so we can display our unique style of combat to the punters. Camping overnight is also permitted, although non-period style tents must be taken down before gates open to the public. Please let me know which day you can make it and whether you can do some biff. The theme of Ironfest this year is 'The Holy Grail'. Check out the link for extra info at ironfest.net - I can let you know about participant details soon. 6 Greetings from the Baron and Baroness Unto the populace do Miles and Ameline, Baron and Baroness of Rowany send warmest greetings! Hopefully, by the time you read this missive you will have recovered from Rowany Festival and been revitalised with ideas for the rest of the year. We have nothing but praise for the stewarding team as well as the many people who volunteered to help with all the many duties and activites at Fetival. Even with the bad weather at the end of pack down the vast majority of people were well behaved all Festival and that makes everybodies work considerably easier. Festival seems to get busier every year and I know many of you are ready to give the stewarding team and the Festival Executive feedback, advice and suggestions. I ask that you write down and the stewards rather than expecting replies from them on facebook, at least for a while. Just because your festival is over, dosen't mean their's has finished. They still have a lot to do to finalize festival, including another poll, similar to last years. Last years was extremely well populated with a high percentage of festival goers replying, and we'd like that to continue this year to enable some continuity. As of festival the Canton of Okewaite is no longer part of Rowany, however it is one of our closest neighbours, so I urge those of you who may to attend their events. They do a particularily good feast. The next big event for us will probably be May Crown in Krae Glas and we are very keen to see as many of you there as possible. 7 Greetings from the Seneschal Greetings to the Populace of the Barony of Rowany, the College of St Ursula, and the Canton of Stowe on the Wowld, I hope that every one is revitalised and inspired after Rowany Festival, and I am looking forward to the ideas that have leapt to mind. As you will have seen, the stewarding team for Festival do an amazing job, and they need a lot of support from volunteers before, during, and to pack/clean up the site. If you have ideas, suggestions, or would like to volunteer to help make Festival 2017 just as brilliant, don t be shy. Remember, Festival is only two weeks away. My term as Seneschal is due to expire this August, (4 months or so) so I would also like to ask you to think about taking on the role. If you would like to know more, please get in touch, and we can chat. Whatever good gentle takes the role on after I step down will also need a deputy, or deputies to assist them, so if you cannot commit to the office, spare some thought for acting as a deputy. My deputies have made all the difference to my time as Seneschal, and I cannot thank them enough. I have also learned a great deal and enjoyed this experience. It is something I definitely recommend. If you are interested in taking on another officer position, currently Lists and Aquisit are both open. Again, please contact me if you would like more information, or would like to apply for either (or both!) of these roles. YiS Tatianitska Iaroslavna (Tanya) Rowany Seneschal Rowany Festival 2017 I hope you all had a wonderful time at Rowany Festival this year, and will join me in thanking Skarp-Heðin Sverðvarpnir and his stewarding team for all their amazing work. At this time I am very pleased to announce that the Stewards for Rowany Festival 2017 will be Vandal and Andrew Daniels, with Bethan Daniels and Helene du Puy as their core stewarding team. If you would like to volunteer to help make Rowany Festival 2017 a memorable occasion and to help spread work out, don t be shy. I look forward to seeing you all at Rowany Festival next year! Skype at Rowany Senate Meetings Over the last month we have also been trialling the use of Skype in our Senate meetings. While this is a process we are still refining, it seems to be working well and we will be continuing with it for the foreseeable future. If you would like to attend the meetings, but cannot be there physically, this may be an option. Please contact me for the Skype ID. Page 7 Reading this on paper? 8 To the Barony, joyous greetings! From the pen of Jean-Christophe le Saussier (Outgoing Rowany Reeve) At Court this Festival past, I formally stepped down as Reeve, having served my two year term. It was a rather tumultuous term, with many changes to policies and procedures, necessitated by mundane concerns. I would like to extend my thanks to the following people for their help and support - Baron and Baroness Rowany, Ameline and Miles, who were excellent (no pun intended!) with their support and ideas - even when it was in telling me that idea was terrible. Mistress Sláine inghean Uí Ruadháin, formerly Treasurer of the SCAA, who joined me in being able to step down from a role at Festival. Her advice, humour and support was invaluable. The 2 Kingdom Exchequers I served under - Medb inghen Iasachta and Thomas Bacchus for their help and support. The Seneschals of Rowany - Mistress Iseabail and Lady Tatianitska who were of invaluable assistance (particularly early on!) The members of my household, House Attica for keeping me sane, keeping my spirits up at times of great frustration and by giving me a space to vent and for allowing me to occasionally be anti social as I hid away for a Skype call with Kingdom and Treasurer. Particular shout out to Lady Ilona Skaldja who, whilst she denies it vehemently, was the one who initially encouraged me to put my hand up for the role. And finally for all those event stewards and the populace of the Barony at large. I know sometimes what I asked you to do was new and not what you were used to - some of the rules may even have felt arbitrary. But it was because you all pitched in and helped that I was as successful as I am being told I was in ensuring things went smoothly. I feel I am leaving the role in better shape than when I picked it up. I know I'm leaving it in very capable hands, with Lady Arabella d'aubigny taking over the reins. Whilst some may have me tagged for taking over certain other offices in the near future (hi Caristiona!) I think a break from matters financial is the best for me at the moment. Thank you all. Yours in Service to the Barony of Rowany Jean-Christophe le Saussier Cockatrice Cockatrice, the Lochac Arts and Sciences journal, is published quarterly (Feb, May, Aug, Nov). 9 In the Friday court at Festival, Politarchopolis interrupted Rowany court to propose a free trade agreement, minimal tax, standardise weights and measures, and an exchange of payment through goods for the lands and people of Okewaite (Politarchopolis lost the war to steal these lands from Rowany at festival last year). King Gilbert interjected with "but it is our land." Aneala offered to administer and do the book keeping for the Crown with Stormhold to ensure fairness - lawgiver Niall strongly advised against it. The King called Okewaite forward and they spoke in favour of the transfer. The Canton of Okewaite officially transferred from Rowany to Politarchopolis. Paraphrasing the King's account of what happened "Let me check that I understand what just happened - The people and lands of Lochac have been transferred to the people and lands of Lochac. Three cheers for Lochac." The Baron of Rowany gave Okewaite a sword as a parting gift and offered to answer any calls for help - a sign of goodwill for their transfer. First inductee into the Rowany Page - Jasper. In the Wars, declarations were made. Fighting for the lands of Lochac were: Adora; Legion of the Fiery Fist; Aneala; Casa dei Libri; Innilgard; Mordenvale; Mercenaries of Burnfield Fighting for the People of Lochac, were: Rowany; Asylum; Attica; St Florian; Krae Glas; Phoenix Rise Rowany Festival 2016 Highlights (Many thanks to The Honourable Baroness Ceara Shionnach) And fighting for the Crown of Lochac, were: The Kings Huscarls; Stormhold; Descartes However, on Saturday, the Lochac Company of Archers reported that there was a meeting between Attica, Adora and Asylum. Conspiracy! This was followed by a day of war to deal with a conspiracy involving Duke Alfar and his household joining with both Adora and Asylum (who are supposed to be enemies!). Allegiances have changed from the declarations - the Legion of the Fiery Fist will pledge allegiance to fight with the Crown towards Hedeby. As did the Barony of Innilgard. Stormhold and Descartes will remain with the Crown. The King estimated his chance of success today is around 99%. The Queen asked for Mistress Elspeth to talk to balance war with the other resources of the kingdom. The Queen asked the populace to look to the Laurels if in need of support. Mistress Elspeth also spoke of the Pelicans and their service - the Queen also asked the populace to look towards the Pelicans if in need of support. Don Wolfram spoke on behalf of the Masters of Defence and spoke of the strategy and defence in addition to offence to aid the endeavours of the Crown. Niall spoke of how the Knights are the balled fist of the Crown - to support and uphold the laws of the Kingdom and the Society. The Queen asked us to look to the Peers so we would know them and be inspired by them. The Children claimed the fullsized war fort as their own. The King announced that the Knights and Masters of Defence would fight to take the fort back from the children. Alfar's forces were forced to join with the Kings forces to try save it but to no avail. The kids offered to give back the fort for the price of a new kids fort. The History of Lochac was presented to the Crown - printed by Mistress Katherine Kerr and leather bound by THL Isabel Winter. There was a display of historical Lochac items. Master Hanbal al Barbari received many wonderful stories of heroism from the war field. The winner of the Heroes Cloak for war feats as Adimar. Stormhold made the cloak for this year and the Barony of Aneala has pledged to make the next heroes cloak. 81 fighters contested the Armoured Fighter Auction Tournament at Rowany Festival The finals were between Sir Ariston and Sir Oze. Oze won the finals for ultimate victory and was given the perpetual Roman spur trophy for winning the Fighter Auction Tourney. The Rapier Auction Tournament saw 33 enter. The field was divided by four and a round robin (best of three) determined the top 8 finalists (2 from each field). Lord Jacques from the College of Saint Basil the Great was the ultimate victor, defeating Guildmaster Don Tariq ibn Jelal in the best of three final. 31 entrants in the Boffer Tourney were called forward in court. Tyran of Mordenvale was announced as the victor. Evan of St Florian came second. Lucas McCaddle and John Chapman tied equal third. Page 9 Reading this on paper?
