Membership Southron Gaard Council Provisional Minutes Chronic Ramblings Spring is well underway now, and summer is supposed to be very hot again, but as I write this column I m rather hoping the fire starts putting out some heat soon! With summers longer days and friendlier weather coming, so too our event calendar starts to fill, with 2 events having taken place in October (see pages 7 to 9) and more coming for December. Whatever shall I do in November you ask? Canterbury Faire draws ever closer, so now may be a good time to start preparing, or volunteer, or perhaps writing a column for next months issue is more your style? For now though, enjoy a column from Their Excellencies and one from our new seneschal;, event reviews and photos, and the usual calendars. And Crown Tourney on November 10! 3 FROM THE TOWER NOVEMBER A.S. LIII PAGE 3 Kingdom of Lochac King Kinggiyadai Khagan II and Queen Altani Khalighu Yeke Khatun II Please send award recommendations to crown@lochac.sca.org with a courtesy copy to B&B@sg.lochac.sca.org. Please check Lochac Cannon Lore for an individual s existing awards and information about awards, additional information can be found on the Kingdom website: Greetings All, Baron and Baroness Southron Gaard We would like to extend congratulations to Lady Vigdis Svínahildardóttir, newest armiger of the Kingdom, and to Lady Edith Winter on her admission into the order of the Tour d Or. We also thank those who recommended that these awards be bestowed, as one of the greatest joys of Our role is to read of the noble deeds done by the members of the Barony, and to be able to spend news of those deeds wider, that all may know of them, and see how highly they are prized. We would like to thank the Steward of the recent Chaney s Manor event, Baroness Agnes Graye, for a most wonderful evening, with thoughtful and useful site tokens, a fun quest, and a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Thanks also to THL Elisabetta Foscari, for a most delicious meal that had both new dishes and more of Ginevra s favourites than should be possible at a single event! We look forward more keenly than ever to Coronation next year, when those most talented ladies reprise parts of the event, and others may experience the beauty and atmosphere of the site. Thanks are also due to Mistress Aveline for a more relaxed but very interesting event with many different activities throughout both days. There was truly something for everyone. The food was also delicious, and Ginevra, amongst others, has made careful note of the correct cheese for the most perfect losenge as a result, and added to the list of books that she needs to study. In upcoming months we look forward to more cooking research (and tasting) with a new type of event a Cooking Chaosiam coordinated by Lord Dauid de Cochrane. This event promises to have plenty of both old and new favourites, and a chance to try things you may have been interested in learning for a while, with classes already lined up to make cheese, sausages and breads and pasta, as well as more to be finalised. With any left overs going to the Toys for Tots Tournament the next day, there are extra chances to try the results for those who cannot make the Chaosiam. In Service to the Crown, Richard and Ginevra

FROM THE TOWER NOVEMBER A.S. LIII PAGE 4 Seneschal, Southron Gaard Well, here I am, writing my first column as seneschal, and I appear to have hit the ground running. (or in my case, at a reasonably paced stumble) It s certainly a bonus that we have recently had several events in succession to be able to attend, and my thanks go out to those who have been putting in the hard yards, organizing events, cooking the foods, arranging activities, and providing us the chance to indulge in our shared hobby. In the last month I ve attended the Anne of Cleves collegium event, an Evening at Chaney s Manor, where I stepped up, and have just returned from the Assemblage de Wildmoor. (alas, departing Wildmoor and the hospitality of its populace appeared to have angered the weather gods, who seemed quite insistent that we stay longer or be subjected to furious rain and nigh-impassable roads) It behooves all of us to remember, all of these events, roles, and work are handled by volunteers, and as such it is on those of us attending to remember and appreciate the effort these volunteers have put in that allow us to participate. To all of you, from the stewards and their teams, to those who fetch and carry, through the populace who answer the call to wash dishes, you have my thanks. Coming into the role, I feel I would like to start off by making sure I have a feel for where everyone is at. As such, the Baronial Officers should expect me to touch base with each of them over the coming weeks to catchup on what they are doing, what they would like to do, and what I can do in this role to make things easier for them, and thus for the rest of us. Likewise, I will be aiming to make it to the Sunday practices more regularly, to make myself more available for anyone who wants to discuss future plans, any ongoing concerns. All in all, I look forward to working with everyone over the coming months, and to help guide the group through any choppy waters that may appear in our path (weather gods not withstanding) Thank you all for this opportunity. Yours in Service Elena Sophia di Luciano dei Medici

FROM THE TOWER NOVEMBER A.S. LIII PAGE 5 Fibre Guild The Southron Gaard fibre guild is open to everyone that has an interest in making and playing with fibre: spinners, dyers, weavers, braiders and the like. Our meetings are usually the third Sunday of the Month at 11:00 am in the Redwood Scout Hall. Bring what you re working on, any new resources to share etc. For more details, please see the Southron Gaard Calendar - The Lochac Fibre Guild has an list at and webpage at which features a monthly award cord tutorial. The Southron Gaard branch also has a Yahoo group list at and now a Trello board that you can request access to by ing Her Excellency, Baroness Ginevra, at g.devisconti@gmail.com. Richard and Ginevra, Baron and Baroness of Southron Gaard, in appreciation for heraldic display, and the high standards of inventiveness seen amongst the populace, would like to announce the Third Baronial Heraldic Challenge. We shall offer prizes in the following categories: Standards and Banners Something to wear (cloaks, tabards, cotehardies...) Something to adorn you (jewellery, tokens, favours...) Something to eat, or eat off (food, plates, glasswear, napkins) Something to mark your territory (chairs, chests, cushions,...) Something to protect you (umbrellas, shields, tents, buildings...) Something to hide the everyday (throws, bags, things to keep the mundane out of sight) and, to serve the barony (We have many projects that would be easier with more hands, such as blinging up the pavilion, helping make banners for the group, which we'll arrange workshops for through the year, but this would also include making a heralds tabard or ceremony cover to stay in Gildenwick, or Wildmoor and other things like that) The Challenge shall run until next Baronial Anniversary, when we shall hope to see a magnificent display of both Creative commons evenings First Tuesday of each month from 7-9, at the Avice Hill Community Center, 395 Memorial Ave, Burnside This month s Creative commons class is Tuesday, November 6 th, topic to be announced. All are welcome to attend. If you're interested, we'll be at the Avice Hill Community Center Donations towards venue rental to lessen the direct cost to the Barony are welcomed. As always, all members of the populace are more than welcome to come along and craft with others. Please see the Facebook and lists for updates!

FROM THE TOWER NOVEMBER A.S. LIII PAGE 6 An Evening at Chaney s Manor Gentles were invited from around the land to experience a night of hospitality from the Sign of the Cross and Raven at their new site, Chaney s Manor. The afternoon saw English Country Dancing, conversation and some games. Then the feast! (see menu next page) A quest took place: first to locate the residence where Mary, Queen of Scots was being held, then the gain access as a travelling player, and having intercepted her communications, decode them. The stewards, including your editor, spent the evening in the kitchen but rumour has it the event was enjoyed and the food was double plus yum I m trying to add a steward photo from each event but we were in no condition to be photographed that night! Here s a stand-in.

FROM THE TOWER NOVEMBER A.S. LIII PAGE 14 Southron Gaard Council Provisional Minutes Meeting Minutes for Southron Gaard, Wednesday, October Present: Elena, Agnes, Richard, Jayne, Ginevra, Lisa, Kotek, Dauid, Vitale, Tetsu, Elisabetta Apologies: Aveline, Adrienne, Jenni Meeting opened 7:33pm 1) Richard moved to accept last meetings minutes. Seconded by Lisa No abstentions. 2) Business Arising Ginevra would like to propose a change to CF budget. She d like $200 worth of petrol vouchers, now that she s been reminded she can apply. Less profit, no change to charges to attendees. Richard moves to accept the proposal Elena seconds All were in favour, no abstentions. 3) Funding Request 1 Vitale: New Artisan Tent I ve canvassed support online. I m prepared to sponsor the furnishings for the tent. Aim to get a substantial tarp that can then be turned into a tent like structure. From Top Mark can get a 6x9m tarp for $629. And would also need $70 for rope. Vitale is willing to cover any extra costs that occur. He does intend to wait to see if there is any further discounts on the tarp. The current tents are too small, not waterproof and collapse in high winds. Discussion: can it be used around CF? Response: can be stored at Faire. Not a single use item so can be used around if needed. To buy from Panther is also way more expensive. Vitale moves to accept his proposal. Dauid seconds No abstentions. Vitale intends to fund it himself and seek reimbursement. 4) Funding request 2: Kotek s Jugs Richard moves to reimburse Kotek $20 for milk jugs he purchased. Elena seconds. All in favour, no abstentions 5) Event Proposal: Dauid s Cooking Collegium The proposal is to have one day of cooking classes. Held at a school so time is confined to not in school holidays, and not next year. There is a restriction on numbers as it has 4 work spaces which will only fit 24 people. Possibly could fit 25. There may be a group who just want to eat. Aim is site opens at 9, coffee and then start around 10- break for lunch and/or repast type dinner. Depending on what s being cooked the budget for each station could vary.

FROM THE TOWER NOVEMBER A.S. LIII PAGE 15 Informal clothing. Site fee and two comps for the school. $70. Discussion - Tetsu: could it be a charity function. Highly unlikely Richard - why do the B&B cost more? Every comp $16. Eaters not participants. Food tech teacher will be in attendance. Date - proposed for the 8th between events. Suggestion - changing it to the first as Toys for Tots Tourney the next day so people from Gildenwick may want to make a weekend of it. Will clash with Idhafen s Summer Event, but not many people from SG look to be attending this year Vitale - leftovers could be brought to the tourney. Kotek agrees it should be the 1st, as many Chch populace will probably stay in Chch. Questions: Vitale: child price be same as the eaters price? Richard: Would be easy to do a kid friendly version of a meal so children shouldn t be excluded from attending Objections - raises the adult prices and fills up places Elena - children will be participating as adults so should pay as adults Dauid - we can tweak the budget so 4 children can pay $15, will submit a revised budget. Kotek - ambivalent on child pricing. Richard moves to accept Dauid s proposed event with changes that have been discussed. Elena seconds to accept event with changes. No abstentions, all in favour. 6) Event Reports: Anne of Cleves- bought in $1089, costs were $1070, made a profit of $ The Saturday site owners now have a exit plan in the event of a fire. Event had 22 adults, 2 of which were just for dinner and ball. Great spaces. WEA now want payment in advance, for those who ve dealt with that site before. Wildmoor- from Aveline- planning continues. And the oven making activity will probably change to bone carving one. More people seem keen on that. Canterbury Faire update: 20ish have booked for Shuttle. Tweaks to the booking form still need to be made. 6) Officer s Reports: a. B&B: Attended Anne of Cleves event, Cheney's Manor event, and Monthly tourney. Held court at all. Attended Dance and Heavy Practices, and Creative Commons. Updated Heraldic Challenge blog with new entries (Check it out at ) Forwarded about Hall hire for Creative Commons to the Reeve. Conversations with Crown around awards, Scribes about warrants, members of the populace and others about event sponsorship, different members of the populace about event bids, forms, and other eventrelated things. Many conversations with various people about officer roles and changeovers. And finally, offered assistance to Our Cousins of Lyondemere to replace the contents of Their stolen trailer. b) Seneschal: attended Anne of Cleves Ball and collegium event. Had to contact the Kingdom/Deputy Kingdom seneschals due to a fire alarm being triggered (cooking, not actual fire) and a fire truck arriving at the venue. This will need reporting in the quarterly report as well. conversations with Rosa re the first aid kids and several members of the populace regarding gear from May's event at Gildenwick needing to be moved out of temporary storage in a populace members garage. This was resolved by Elena (incoming seneschal) picking up the
