Baroness Takaya Mereleone hosted her annual New Year s Eve party and friends Fireworks Lit up the Night on New Year s Eve from near and far gathered or phoned in to celebrate the holiday. There was an abundance of tasty treats that everyone brought to share. The kitchen was a happening place for the first part of the evening but as the time for the ball to drop crept closer, the Baron did his annual mini concert for the guests. Then everyone gathered in the living room to see the ball drop and to share this moment of fellowship with other Rivenstarkans. Some of the guests at Takaya s New Year s Eve party braved the wind and frigid temperatures to go outside and shoot off or watch the sparklers, Roman candles and fountains light up the night sky. Others, were smarter and watched through the window. 3 Meeting Notes: Monday, December 15, 2015 Event Reports: Pieter went to Ohio to Hrothgeirsfjordr. He diagramed one of the games, crossing a lava stream, on the white board in the meeting room. There were also several other games / tourneys and Pieter reports having a lot of fun. He didn t attend the feast and didn t know anyone at their Court being that it was not in the Middle Kingdom. He reports that the King of Aethelmarc held the field along with his Regional Champion in Fencing. Officer Reports: Herald (item for later discussion in the parking lot) Drake and Aurora have been discussing how to get more A&S into the Barony. They want to know how everyone felt about doing some A&S activities after the business meeting (9 PM weekly). Activities to include dancing, embroidery, period games etc. The Baroness commented that we have done it in the past and will happily do it again. Breanna volunteered another Kumihimo workshop in there is interest. Archery Wilhelm announced that Better War Through Archery is coming up and he mentioned it to the folks at Christmas Court. It looks like a nice sized group might be interested and a car pool is being organized. Chronicler Marian presented a new issue of the RivenSTAR today. She also had a parking lot item for the next issue. Equestrian Nan noted that the group is on hiatus until March at least when Pieter and Nan s Polish daughter Agnieszka is planning to come for a visit. Madrigali Pieter noted that the group is on break until Jan 12th when they will start up again for the Rivenstar Madrigal Singers 28th season. Exchequer Francoise has nothing to report except the need to get our Spring Event on the Kingdom Calendar. We need to make the arrangements for a location so we can get on the calendar. Seneschal Gallien s report is in. He was able to report some awesome things from this year including several demos and recruitment. Baron Moonwulf is thankful to everyone who came out to Christmas Court and bids everyone Happy Holidays! Martial There will be practice this week but the practice on 1/7 is cancelled because of planned work to be done to the drill floor in the armory. Current Business: Baroness Takaya invites one and all to her annual New Year s Eve party at her home. It will start at. There will be no meetings on 12/22 or 12/29. Spring Event (Note that summer 2015, Simple Day will be held on the July 4th weekend so it will not be possible to hold an Equestrian Symposium this year.) Pieter reported that Narissa thinks that a park setting for the day activities with a pavilion for bad weather might work out well. Then the Feast could be held in another location. Gallien asked if there were any further thoughts for putting a bid in for Coronation. That idea was quashed. Pieter was talking with Narissa about the possibility of her being the autocrat for Three Saints this year. Some choices of dates are: April 4 (Easter Weekend), May 2 and take on the task of Coronation or May 16th which is a week after the Purdue spring semester ends. Think about a day site and an evening site for Court and Feast. Nan had an idea: what if we did a lunch Feast to break up the day? We would have fighting early and then more fighting after feast. Discussion ensued determined that it probably wasn t feasible because many fighters don t eat much when they are fighting. It was decided to nail down the date of May 16th so we can get an announcement to the kingdom calendar. We will then try to find a site available on that day. We still need a theme Three Saints and a.manticore? Gryphon?, Kelpie? Three Saints Reprise, Through the Years (once again with feeling!!) Monday, Jan 12, 2015 Officers Reports: Madrigali Pieter reports that the subject of the spring performance will be stars, moons and galaxies. Archery Better War is the first weekend in Feb. on the 7th. Who is interested in carpooling? Student Org Pieter proposes an expedition to Maidens with as many new folds as possible. Gallien and Pieter are working with Warder Don Adam to raise Page 3

funds for the Pennsic scholarships. Rivenstar is sending a goodly number of combatants to this fundraising event at Maidens. Raffle tickets can be purchased throughout the day and then people are encouraged to participate in side-bets all day long for more tickets. Side note: Bjorn and Hillary of Scribal fame will be invested as Prince and Princess of Cynagua Kingdom of the West on the same day as the Feast of Maidens. Chronicler Marian renewed her membership for another 2 years. Her Domesday report was submitted (admittedly late) and the last 2 issues of the RivenSTAR were sent to the Kingdom Chronicler. Equestrian Chrystal Chamfron will be the first week in June. In March Agnieszka will arrive from Poland so there will be some equestrian activities. Quartermaster nothing more, waiting on Pieter Exchequer There is a new Regional Exchequer. Francoise reported that her Domesday report is done and that she sent in a non member surcharge report for the equestrian event last July even though $0 was collected. Herald Drake s Domesday report is in. Baroness We re cruising waiting for warmer weather. Current Business: Lady Nerissa will be the autocrat for Three Saints this year. She ll try to get to every 2nd or 3rd meeting. Nerissa s concern is that we have become rote in event planning. She is worried that she may not do it the same to which we all say, yeah! We are happy for new thoughts and ideas. We have settled on May 16 for the event and some site options are: Columbian Park, Buck Creek Community Center, Ross Camp, National Guard Armory, Methodist Church in Dayton and Burtsfield School Gym. People volunteered to look into each of these places with the criteria being: availability, adequate kitchen, foul weather place, public space, classrooms, feast area and price for people total. Breanna volunteered to make small kumihimo braids as site tokens and is asking for those who would like to help with the project. Parking Lot items: Wulf is soliciting council from those present as to what to speak about at RUM. He s been asked to speak on the martial side of things. Gallien suggested keeping your mind in the Page 4 game. How to walk into a tournament with the right mind-set. Monday, January 19, 2015 Announcement: At Maidens there will be an activity to raise funds for the Pennsic Scholarship Fund. They are planning 7 prize fights. So take money and bet (donate) freely! Officer Reports: Archery Better War is the 2nd weekend after Maidens on Feb 7th. The plan is to take a carload of newbies with Wilhelm and Breanna. As the weather gets warmer and dryer look for archery announcements. Martial There were 5 new fencers this last practice who were brought in by their friends even without a spring call-out. Great news. Madrigali Pieter got ambitious again this week and Takaya didn t slap him down. Inside joke he pushed the madrigali a little to fast and the song sort of fell apart. Equestrian Mikki is not yet an EMiT. They are waiting for warmer weather to begin in late Feb or early March. Herald Arabella s name made it through the Laurel yea Drake! A&S there will be a Kumihimo workshop after meeting tonight. Aurora would like to promote A&S activities by having an activity from 9-10 PM each Monday, right after the business meeting. She has a schedule on the Rivenstar Facebook page. Better War is the Regional A&S faire this year. If you are interested in placing an A&S entry, you need to pre-reg on line. But, take note that Aurora tried to do so and couldn t get though. If you are submitting something for the competition, please also notify Aurora so she can include it in her report. Seneschal Nerissa asked where are we at on loaner gear, especially if we have 5 new fighters? It was reported that they all have garb and some gear. Pieter arranged rides and gear haulage for all the newbies who wanted to go to Better War. Exchequer Old National and Lafayette Savings are merging but it shouldn t effect our account. Francoise reported that she called and checked it.

Baroness Takaya announced that she d being the paperwork for the summer equestrian practices to the meeting next week. Current Business: First of all, Thank You to Nerissa for taking on the task of autocrat for the event. It will be on May 16th and is on the Kingdom Calendar. Note: it is up against Border Raids. There was a long discussion of the sites that volunteers reviewed and it came down to Ross Camp or the Armory. Another discussion was had about the possibility of a 40th Anniversary Party closer to the true date in October. The theme for Three Saints this year was settled by the 40th anniversary symbol which is a ruby. So Three Saints and a Ruby it is. Monday, January 26, 2015 Event Reports: Giovanni was the first to report on Maiden s. He saw lots of heavies but was too busy in the fencing room to watch. He purchased a new hat and feathers there. There were single sword, 2 handed cut and thrust tourneys as well as a grappling experiment. He saw Court and reported that the feast was quite good. Wulf reported that there were 6 new Rivenstar fencers between this year and last year. It was quite a slam down fest and the Baron lost the farm to the Pennsic Scholarship Fund. (The first year of the fund, they sent 10 rapier fighters to Pennsic this year looks to surpass that total.) This year the fund raised $1230 at Maidens. There were 8 fights. You put your ticket in for your chosen fighter and the fighter really created the odds. There was $1000 worth of prizers donated or covered by personal funds. Wulf spent a traditional lunch with others who were around for the very first Maidens. It is becoming a regular tradition. Much fun was had going to classes and hanging around. Wulf joined Dark Laughter for grill the old baron which he declared a pleasure especially because many of those grilling were new people at their first event! Pieter reported that the feast was very nice. He committed an act of heresy when he announced that there was Russian Cream and it was even better than ours (less gelatin and more custard). James a newly authorized fighter said it was the best food he d ever tasted. Gallien reported that HRH held the field for both heavies and rapier. Our own Rose of Rivenstar took a turn to stand as royal guard. Officer Reports: Quarter Master supplies are all there and nothing is frozen. Exchequer Francoise has a Domesday report due in a few days. She will have the equestrian insurance shortly. Equestrian Official practice will begin on March 1st. Herald nothing to report A&S activities after the meeting seem to be going well Chronicler nothing to report Webminister there will be a new server migration soon. Archery Better War is coming soon. Wilhelm went to fighter practice on Wed. to drum up some better participation for Better War. Several people were interested in archery activities but not able to attend Better War. They are trying to get a carpool going to the event. Reminder that regional A&S is at Better War this year as well. Francoise will be there in the tally room. Madrigals Pieter says they are singing merrily. Baron At Maidens, Wulf was asked about some of the leather items we was wearing so he s thinking about getting up a leather working class. Current Business Dani has been scouring websites for information and reported that she couldn t find our event on the calendar. Pieter was sure it was there. Nerissa is planning to create an Event page. We have real (industrial) rubies for the site tokens in honor of our 40th anniversary. Venue nothing has been decided yet. Aurora would like to set up a hospitality space near the fighting like a day camp. She would like it to provide games and a place to sit and play them. She also has some decorating ideas. Gallien will look further into Ross Camp so please him with pointed questions for the camp director. Sigulf volunteered to be in charge of merchants again this year. Remember your Chronicler! Write Stories! Page 5

Monday, February 2, 2015 Event Reports: none Better War is this coming weekend. Officer Reports: Equestrian Gearing up for March. Takaya is waiting for all the Marshals reports to come in to her by the 14th. Exchequer Francoise turned in her Domesday report to the Seneschal. Baron nothing to report this week Student Org. We magically got several new fencers without a call-out. There is an effort underway to replace loaner gear. Martial Working on the loaner gear. Pieter bought material for which the student org. needs to reimburse him. Herald nothing this week A&S nothing this week Chronicler Marian downloaded the photos John Skinner took at the New Year s Eve party. Archery Better War, go to it. Madrigali We welcomed a new alto Danielle tonight. Seneschal Things are quiet, working on 3 Saints. Also consider how we will celebrate out 40th anniversary. It will probably be sized about like Christmas Court or larger than a house party but not quite a full blown event size. Expect people perhaps. Pieter and Nan have volunteered to host it at Huis Doorn. Current Business: Three Saints Gallien hasn t heard back from the Armory. Ross camp was booked though next year. Since next year s Three Saints might be the new Baronial Investiture for the first time in 40 years, we may want to book Ross Camp now for a larger event. Site tokens are coming along apace. They are half done. First feast planning session will be this Friday 2/6 at 6:30 PM at Marian s house. Refreshments will be served. Parking Lot: Better War carpool will be leaving from Pieter and Nan s and convene on campus at 8 AM Saturday morning. There are a whole lot of challenge slots set up. Feast has to be all or none for the carpoolers so plan on not attending. A vote was taken of those present to allow $120 in baronial funds for the purchase of new arrows at Better War to be used during baronial practice. Marian made the Page 6 made the official proposal, Pieter seconded and the vote carried Some discussion on baronial funds ensued. Rest assured that the barony is well in the black. Gallien noted that since Caitrina cannot attend meetings, if anyone has the experience and desire to help out with the baronial webpage, he would entertain applications. You don t have to be versed in web page design, just willing to keep the site current. Monday, February 9, 2015 Seneschal Report We have a site for Three Saints! The National Guard Armory is booked. We will have even better access than we have had in the past because there will be a group of national guard using the facility at the same time. We will have green space as well. Nerissa and Gallien will go out on Thurs to sign the papers and do a walkthough. Event Reports: Better War Helene reported having fun and getting a lot of archery in. It was nice to do something in the winter. She learned many things about different ways to shoot. Lunch was a bit disappointing. The cheese was good though. Wilhelm reported that after lunch a tournament was held and that there were many learning opportunities. There was a Robin Hood Shoot and a stag shoot among others. Erik made a Robin Hood shot. There were classes too. Pappa Day taught one. Wulf sat in and contributed to a class on deconstructing a deer. On the A&S side, Francoise worked the tally room. She noted that the catch words for the day were, that s how many entries we had. Aurora earned two seconds for her entries. In all there were only 6 entries. No stress in the tally room this year. They all reported that many old friends and acquaintances were there. Ten people from Rivenstar attended; two new students among them. Wulf reported that Court started an hour late and that Cecily got a Cavendish Knot. Francoise and Sigulf said that the Judges lunch was really good. Sigulf also noted that judging really isn t hard so volunteer. If you can read, you can judge!

Officer Reports: Archery Nan brought in an example of the arrows she bought. She forgot the amount of baronial funds and spent $210 rather than $120 but she purchased 3 doz. arrows; enough to outfit 6 archers. A vote was taken and passed for the slightly increased budget to pay for the extra arrows. Nan also reported that all the archery loaner gear is now marked with a Rivenstar. Chatelaine Rocky has donated garb to pick up. She is trying to keep Gold Key down to 10 Rubbermaid tubs. Note: There is a new Midrealm Demo policy that we will have to learn. The Regional Chatelaine suggested that A&S or martial activities be done in a public space so as to attract more members. Aurora with the idea she may be interested. Exchequer Francoise wrote the check for the deposit on the Armory. It will be ready to mail. She just needs to make sure it goes to the proper persons attention. Herald Drake has been helping Nathan put together a name and device. He is trying for Reynault de la Guerre. Archery Everyone is just waiting for better weather and dryer ground. Equestrian Takaya reported having a copy of the official insurance so that March 1st will be an official practice. Chronicler Marian started the next issue of the RivenSTAR this week. She will contact Caitrina about updating the PDF back issues on the web page. Madrigali Singing Merrily. Current Business: Reynault brought something to share with the group. He d like to start a business and he brought his A-frame logo sign to share. His new venture will be called La Vache Morte or the Dead Cow and it will be a leatherworking business. We wish him luck in this merchanting venture. Three Saints Red is the color of the day for the event. The first feast planning session was held at Marian s house last Friday. Takaya, Olwen, Dani and Marian went through feast menus of the last 40 years to cull items that were both tasty and representative of some of the great feasts of the past. Many of the items are also red in honor of our ruby anniversary. The first Feast Tasting will be held at Huis Doorn on Sunday, March 1 at 6 PM. Breanna has 121 site tokens made already! Way to go Breanna. Gallien will bring the mounted rubies next week. Parking Lot: Wulf s question, What do you think of this topic for RUM? Forty Years a Fighter He is planning to talk about what has and hasn t changed; what worked and didn t work over the years. This evening s A&S activity after the meeting will be medieval games. Aurora made a number of Alquerque boards from material which use pennies and nickels as playing pieces. Drake and Aurora taught several people to play the game. Monday, February 16, 2015 Note of Interest: After March 2nd, the Grant Street Garage will no longer be free after hours. It will be a 24 hour cash or A-pass garage only. Event Reports: Pieter reported that Val Day was snowy! There were two tournaments and a melee practice. The main event was a poker tourney Bear Pit. It took a straight flush to win, for which Nan got a box of chocolates (translation: Pieter won the tourney.) At Court, a new Regional Youth Officer was appointed. There were 2 marriage proposals, both successful. Pieter had to come home though Ft. Wayne due to the snow. Luckily he made it home. Others who went toward Chicago, did not and were stuck. Officer Reports: Seneschal We have a contract for our site for Three Saints! Recently the BOD enacted a 4th peerage; the Master of Defense. Aethelmarc wrote the first writ of elevation. Dorinda will be the first fencer put on vigil. She is one of our own be it many years ago. The Midrealm Royals are actively seeking on line nominations for those deemed worthy of elevation. They will be known as Master or Mistress of Defense and their regalia will be a livery collar with 3 conjoined rapiers as the center piece. Chatelaine Rocky has been fixing and repairing lots of garb. Gallien noted that Aurora and Nerissa Page 7

would like to focus on the newbies for the Spring Event. They d like a welcome area or Chatelaine s Spot at the event. Also noted, we need to procure student help for the lunch tavern at the event. Equestrian They are all just waiting for spring. Mikki walked Winchester around today. Herald Drake received word through Aurora that his name didn't pass but his device did pass the Laurel s scrutiny. He is currently working with Nathan on his name. Exchequer Francoise needs to write a check for the contract with the Armory. She ll mail it in. Archery Wilhelm said they are in a holding pattern until warmer weather arrives and with it drier ground. He just had contact on Wed. with a new student who is interested in joining the archers. Chronicler All back issues of the RivenSTAR have been sent to Caitrina. Madrigali singing merrily. Current Business: Three Saints Breanna has 137 site tokens finished and ready to go. Hoobah! The first Feast Tasting will be on March 1st at 6 PM at Huis Doorn. Bring your appetite. Gallien reported on the layout of this year s event. We are hoping to make use of the green space to the east of the armory. We should still expect spots for cars even though there is a national guard group using the site on the same weekend. There will be active duty personnel there with us. One of the biggest dings for this site is the lack of ambiance. The people at the Armory said they have a lift and would hang pick lines for us. The thought is to run some PVC between the pick lines and drape fabric for a false ceiling, relieving the austerity of the location. We need a committee to start to plan décor. Parking Lot: Gallien is asking for feedback on his work as a seneschal. If you have comments, please contact Gallien at meeting or on line. Breanna is asking for help with her research. She likes Kumihimo and wants to be more involved in the largess movement. She wants to create braids to donate to the Royals but she wants to make them in the colors of many of the different groups in the kingdom. Can anyone help her in knowing those color combinations? Gallien suggested that she send an to the Kingdom Seneschal to ask for the groups colors. Pieter suggested that she just pick some color combinations that go well together, chances are that they will be someone s colors and that the Royals will eventually find someone to give them to. She can t go wrong with common color combinations. Breanna also noted that she d appreciate some help with the task over the long term if anyone is interested in contributing. Save the date!
