Always lovely to have visiting Rotarians and last night as well as Joachim we enjoyed the company of Nancy Smith.

The Queensland Government has commissioned Peter and his colleagues in an attempt to inform and receive feedback from the public.

I did that because I felt there is no point in complaining about the outcome if I and sufficient others don t tell the Government what we think.

It was a pleasure to have Pauline Soden, the daughter of our late member, Jack Cronin, present a cheque to Michael Thompson, the winner of the Jack Cronin Engineering Scholarship, for being place highest in the first year of his Engineering Degree exams. It was also nice to welcome Tam the new president of Southport Rotaract following Simone s (aka Holly), retirement. Simone attends QUT in Brisbane and struggles to give Rotaract the time she would like. Always lovely to have visiting Rotarians and last night as well as Joachim we enjoyed the company of Nancy Smith. Peter Kelly s presentation on development options for the Spit was interesting and topical. The Queensland Government has commissioned Peter and his colleagues in an attempt to inform and receive feedback from the public. Apart from presentations such as we had from Peter there is all the information on line and facility to fill in surveys. I did that because I felt there is no point in complaining about the outcome if I and sufficient others don t tell the Government what we think. Marion is going ahead and ordering our Club shirts, I think thirteen at last count. If your name isn t on the list, let Marion know asap to be included in the order. Our meeting of the 11 th of April is one none of us should miss. See details later in this Rotator. Next week I will be in Charleville with, Tony P, Lionel and Peter helping people in that community that are still struggling following years of drought. The grass might grow as the rain comes, but recovery for the farmers takes much longer. Tony Stenton has agreed to stand in for me as we acknowledge March as Water and Sanitation month with visitors from Broadwater Southport hearing about a water project they participated in. 3 Scribes Report March 21 st 2017 Chairman Graham Jones opened the meeting with the Four Way Test and a toast to the Queen and Australia. Graham invited Steve Penfold to share a Rotary Minute. He discussed the Model United Nations Australia (MUNA) program for 2017, a program designed to create international awareness. Schools choose a year 11/12 student to participate in the District 9640 MUNA day. The student gets to select a country and then on the assigned day come dressed in that countries national costume and they get to sample each of the countries food delights. It is a great day of new experiences. Steve described a few of the benefits and some of the current topics of the programme: Speaking opportunities Research required Terrorism Climate change District 9640 will hold its day on the 25 th March at the Tweed Heads Civic Centre. Two students will be chosen to go to Canberra for the National MUNA. President Graham was then invited to welcome members and guests. Three visiting Rotarians Joachim Ulrich (Gold Coast Club); Nancy Smith (Broadbeach Club) and Tam Le-Vo (President of the Rotoract Club) Three club guests Pauline Soden, who was invited to present the Jack Cronin Engineering Bursary; Michael Thomson, the recipient and Peter Kelly (Spit Consultation Group) President Graham invited Pauline Soden and Michael Thomson to join him. Pauline presented Michael with the Jack Cronin Engineering Bursary. He then went on to request members to update the Rotary Polo shirt list and for members who wish to attend the Lunch for Eight to get their names on the list. Graham then invited Peter Kelly to give his overview of the consultation process for the development of the Spit. He explained the 2 sites that the Government wanted residents feedback on and provided some of the feedback the consultants had received to date. The consultation process included residents face to face meetings, internet based surveys and meetings with numerous other concerned groups. There has been a proposal from the ASF consortium to build a high rise and commercial building on the government vacant site south of Sea World. Height is likely to be a contentious issue as will the development in total. There were several robust questions put forward to Peter from concerned members. He answered them all within the confines of the consultants brief. He did point out that the consultant s report will only include their findings and will make no recommendations. Graham invited Marion to present the Certificate for a Literacy Kit, which the club sends to Tanzania, as a token of the club s appreciation. She also presented Peter with a Rotary magazine to perhaps put on the office reception coffee table. Graham then invited Directors to speak Merv o Reminded all about the District Conference raffle tickets he has for sale. The message was very simple - Take a book and sell what you can or risk the possibility of being invoiced for a book. Funds raised go to the malaria project. o He also reminded everyone to register for the District Conference. DG Michael o Described the constructive meeting held at Ballina last weekend covering the District Conference. o He made a plea for some quality bottles of wine to be used as raffle prizes at the District Conference. All donated bottles to be given to Merv NO TASTING 28 March

4 Hugh o Provided an update on the meeting they had with the Ashmore Club re the Man Shed. He advised that all going well the proposal should go to Council on 28 th April. o What would you prefer to do sell 25 raffle books every year or play your part with a few carousel duties each month? This was in reference to the significant amount of funds the club gets from the carousel operation. Hugh provided the shortfall in the April carousel roster for members to consider. As just one example of how the funds were spent he advised that $30,000 were going to the Man Shed project. o He also asked members for possible projects which the carousel funds could be used for. All ideas to Hugh. Leanda o Provided an update for the Uncles and Aunties day. This was tentatively set for the 20 th August at McIntosh Park between 11am and 3pm. Rotoract will organise the children s games as this was a huge success last year. Leander will update as things firm up. Graham Jones o Advised that they had received $60,000 for the malaria project but need significantly more. He suggested that perhaps some consideration be given to using a little of the carousel funds for this. o The Ramble still needs about 50 volunteers. They still require teams. The ramble is similar to the Geocache which has swept the world but limited to the local area. A great fun day out. Secretary s report: 19 members present, 3 visiting Rotarians and 3 club guests for a total of 25. TonyP was our sergeant for the evening and focused on St Patricks Day. Each table was a team and each team member had to contribute $2. He then advised that each team had to provide a limerick or two. He kicked off with a few of his own which got all the members enthused. Google was working overtime. He also gave the teams an option to buy one of his limericks which was accepted on several occasions. A great session. Raffle was won by Andrew Middleton and the heads and tails by Michael Thompson. Graham then invited President Graham to close the meeting. He provided some final points: The 11 th April meeting will be held at the carousel for training. Each carousel operator MUST undergo this training and be provided with a Certificate of Competency to Operate the Carousel. This will be followed by dinner at the Envy Hotel. The Gold Coast Volunteer organisation still needs volunteers for the Gold Coast Triathlon. He advised that he will be at Charleville for the next week or so with Tony P, Merv, Peter O and Lionel. Tony Stenton will be standing in for him as President next week Graham thanked everyone for coming and closed the meeting. It will begin at 6.00 pm at the carousel when Gary, David, Steve and Hugh will make sure we all understand the upgraded operating procedures for the carousel, after which we will sign, and they counter sign Competency to Operate Certificates, which all operators of the carousel need to meet current compliance requirements. I have sent invitations to Robina and Ashmore Rotary Clubs and also our Rotaractors and Satellite Club members, in the hope we can get the majority of operators certified and a group also certified as trainers to cover the remainder and all new volunteers as they engage. I still need more runners and need someone to co-ordinate food service. Lifebridge will again be catering with delicious food. I have 2 kitchen assistants, but need another volunteer to run the kitchen. I also need another person on the registration desk. Is there anyone available to manage the sound desk? I have a young assistant James but also need someone older and more experienced. Registrations are steadily coming in and there should be a similar number of teams to last year. Ongoing renovations to the Civic Centre mean we may not be able to use the front entry, but it is looking like we shall still have use of the auditorium.
