They have worked togeer on volunteer projects for e town, movie shorts (one of which won a prize at e Atlantic Film Festival for You), book discussions, photography projects, teen civics lessons, and more. Members of e group can join any or all of e activities depending on eir interests. STG is currently working on a PSA promoting public libraries to teens, and developing a You Media Team, which will cover stories locally for publication on e town website. I encourage all libraries to invite teens into eir branches, whatever e situation, row out some ideas, and see where it takes you. Teens work!

6 Saturday, October 26 cont d 11:00 - noon Maple Room, Holiday Inn Effectively Managing Bedbugs in Libraries Helen Thexton, Manager of Alderney Gate Public Library and Carrie Muller, Branch Operations Supervisor at Alderney Gate Public Library, Halifax Public Libraries Bedbugs are increasingly present in communities roughout Canada, including in Nova Scotia. While libraries are at low risk for infestation, e presence of bedbugs in our communities means libraries need to know what to do, if e pests are found in materials or facilities. Erica will provide e historical context of e genre and how it has (or hasn t) changed over e years, highlight new and hot titles, and recommend several helpful resources for is fascinating genre. Memoir: it s e gateway drug to non-fiction. Comic Books: Scratching e Surface of Sequential Art: Covers e basics of e various genres of comics, what are essential titles and creators, and a brief history of e medium. Focus on e audience demographics for major comics titles It is OK to Read YA (even if you are A): Twilight, Harry Potter, Hunger Games... adults are reading YA and loving it. Angela will recommend some great books, which adults will enjoy, and give some resources for finding more, as well as some display ideas to get even more people in on e YA craze.

This session will provide an introduction to a different way of making sense of ese complex environments and some approaches for finding solutions. Noel Lannon, Commissionaires Nova Scotia Regardless of size or location, libraries should be a safe place for bo staff and patrons. That s not as easy as it sounds when you serve e general public. Since 2007, Halifax Public Libraries, in partnership wi Therapeutic Paws of Canada, has brought trained erapy.dogs and eir handlers to work wi struggling readers in a number of branches. Join Alision and Don to learn more about is partnership and how it has grown from one man and a dog to become an integral part of e library s support for young readers. 3:30-4:30 Aspen Room, Holiday Inn The Roles and Responsibilities of Effective Trustees Dr. Tom Urbaniak, Associate Professor of Political Science, Cape Breton University How can board members be effective in providing oversight, ensuring accountability, and articulating a meaningful vision for eir public libraries? How can trustees respect e role of administration while adding value as a group of leaders and advocates in eir own right?
