2 INTRODUCTION Saharsa is ne f the thirty-eight districts f Bihar. Saharsa district became a separate district in 1954 prir t which it was a part f Ksi divisin. The imprtant rivers flwing thrugh the district are Ksi, Baghmati. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Earlier Saharsa district was within the Bhagalpur Divisin. Ksi Divisin was frmed n 2 nd Octber 1972 cmprising f Saharsa, Purnia and Katihar district with its head quarters at Saharsa. Frmerly it had n independent status and parts f Saharsa were included in the ld districts f Munger & Bhagalpur. Ancient Times: In ancient times, Vaishali was the strngest republic in Nrth-Bihar and beynd that lay the famus territry f Anguttarap. There was a small Janpad, named Apna, in Anguttarap and it included a prtin f the district f Saharsa. Varius sites f the district, nw cmpletely erded and destryed by the Ksi, viz. Biratpur, Budhiagarhi, Budhnaghat, Buddhadi, Pitahahi and Mathai are assciated with Buddhism Bth Anga and Nrth Bihar (including Saharsa) cntinued t be independent till the early part f the sixth century B.C Between 320 and 1097 A.D Under the Guptas (frm 320 A.D.), the entire Nrth Bihar was cnslidated as a Tirbhukti (prvince) with its capital at Vaishali. The extent f Saharsa during the perid under review was upt the cnfines f Pundravardhanbhukti which included sme f its present area. Frm the gegraphical pint f view, Saharsa was the mst strategically suited frm being the Jayaskandharar (temprary Capital) f the Palas at the time when they were surrunded n all sides by enemies. Between 1097 and 1765 A.D. The decline f the Pala authrity in Bihar and Bengal was fllwed by the establishment f the Karnata in Mithila and the Sena dynasties in Bengal. Bth the Kanrnatas and Senas claimed authrity ver the prtin f Saharsa and ften entered int an armed cnflict. The whle district f Saharsa was dtted with small chief tranships created bth by the Hindus and the Muslims. Even in the early part f Mughal rule they culd venture t ppse the central authrity as Bihar and the Afghans were ppsed t the establishment f Mughal authrity. The Satyagraha Mvement f Mahatma Gandhi in 1921 received widespread supprt in the district.

3 ADMINISTRATIVE Saharsa twn is the district headquarters f Saharsa district. Saharsa district cmprises tw sub-divisins, namely Saharsa Sadar & Simri Bakhtiarpur which is divided int 10 blcks. Saharsa is famus fr its varieties f Manges and Summer Berry knwn as Litchi. Saharsa is ne f the biggest rice prducing hubs in the entire Ksi area. 11 HERITAGE & TOURISM Tara Sthan: It is situated at a distance f abut 16 kms. west f Saharsa in the village Mahishi, where an ancient temple f Bhagwati Tara is built. The idl f Bhagwati Tara is said t be very ld and draws devtees frm far and wide. Surya Mandir: The Sun Temple at Kandaha village is an imprtant religius and histrical place which has been duly recgnized by the Archaelgical survey f India like Surya Mandir in Dev f Aurangabad district. Here in Kandaha, the magnificent idl f Surya Bhagwan riding n seven hrsed charit, has been carved n a single granite slab. Chandikasthan: This temple is famus fr an ancient temple f gddess Chandi. The tantric Schlars and devtees attach much significance t this Chandi temple, which is said t frm an equilateral triangle (TRIK) with Katyayani temple near Dhamhara ghat and Tara temple at Mahishi. During the Navratra, peple frm distant places visit the village t ffer prayers t the gddess f pwer. Babaji Kuti: The famus place f Babaji Kuti is situated at nearly 9 kms. west frm the Saharsa district headquarters. The huge banyan tree under which the remains f Laxminath Gsaiji have been preserved, is the centre f great reverence fr the peple f all sect and religin. Mandan Bharti Asthan :The place is situated in Mahishi Blck. It is said that a religius discurse (Shastrarth) was held between Shankaracharya and the lcal schlar Mandan Mishra. Bharti, wife f Mandan Mishra, wh was als a great schlar, was named as Judge fr the discurse. It is als said that Shankaracharya, after his initial victry ver Mandan Mishra was challenged by Bharati, was utwitted by her and he accepted defeat. Dewan Ban Mandir :One Shiv Ling is established in the temple situated in Sahpur- Manjhul f Nauhatta blck. It is said that the Ling was established by Maharaja Shalivahan sme time in 100BC. The Hindus celebrate a festival called Jitiya after the name f Jimutbahan wh was the sn f Maharaja Shalivahan.

12 HERITAGE & TOURISM Nauhatta: It is an ld village, imprtant since the time f Mughals and is presently the head quarters f the blck f the same name. The village has a Shiva temple abut 80 feet in height. The temple which was damaged in the earthquake f 1934, was recnstructed by Raja Srinand Singh f Srinagar Estate. There is a grave f Madh Singh n an earthen mund abut 50 feet high. Madh Singh had becme a martyr in the battle f Ladri Ghat. Offerings are made n the grave bth by Hindus and Muslims. Udahi: The village is situated in Kahra blck. It cntains an ancient image f gddess Durga discvered during excavatin. Accrding t a legend, ne Sne Lala Jha dreamt that he had received divine instructin t excavate a particular place. The image was fund at that very spt and latter established in the temple. A fair is held n the day f Maha Ashtami Puja every year. Karu Khirhari temple: Situated n the bank f Ksi River, there is a temple f Saint Karu Khirhari, wh is said t have attained divinity by virtue f his Shiv-Bhakti a dedicatin t Cws. Peple frm all walks f life cme t ffer milk t Karu Baba. Althugh this temple near Mahpura village-2 kms. away frm Mahishi blck ffice, is situated in the riverside f the eastern Kshi Embankment. It has survived the nslaught f the turbulent river. Recently, the Bihar Gvernment has annunced t develp Karu Khirhari temple as a majr turist spt. Matsyagandha Mandir: The barren water lgged area in Saharsa twn has been develped as a beautiful place cmmnly knwn as Matsyagandha Mandir. The cnstructin f Rakta Kali temple and an val shaped temple with 64 deities (knwn as 64- Ygini) engraved n the inner walls f temple, attracts devtees frm far-ff places. The Bihar Gvernment has established a beautiful turist cmplex at this place.
