The Society opened a small Lighthouse Museum in the existing Oil House in 1973 the same year the Lighthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has advocated for its preservation and protection ever since. Last year, we had over 3,500 guided tours offered to over 80,000 visitors. Visitors can climb the restored Lighthouse, an iconic landmark in South Florida since before the Civil War. In addition, they can experience 5,000 years of history in the waterfront historical museum from pottery formed by pre-historic people to items used in Jupiter by the U.S. military during World War II. Outside, brick pathways with native landscaping connect visitors to the Lighthouse, Oil House and Keeper s Workshop. The 1892 George Washington Tindall Pioneer Homestead, an authentic Seminole Chickee, and an interpretive area under an historic ficus tree add to the richness of the visitor experience. Especially popular are special Sunset and Moonlight Tours highlighting the beautiful Intracoastal Waterway and the surrounding 120-acre natural area. We also host weddings and other events, plus educational programs for children, scouts, public and private schools and adults, such as the Lighthouse Lecture Series, Hikes through History, Lighthouse Story Time for Kids, Twilight Yoga at the Light, and Hands-On History Programs. In 2008, we received Congressional designation and protection of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area. This Federal legislation named the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Museum as partners in the management of the cultural areas of the 120-acre Intracoastal Waterway site in partnership with the U.S. Department of Interior s Bureau of Land Management.
