Mombasa is a sea port and home to many sea front hotels and resorts, as well as numerous tourist attraction sites. Its rich history and attractive sceneries will, no doubt, enrich your experience during the exciting conference. The theme for the conference Continental Free Trade Area: Challenges and Opportunities for the Legal Profession has been carefully selected to exhaustively debate the recent trends in the continental trade. We have partnered with leaders in the subject area from across the continent with a view to unpacking the subject and exposing opportunities and challenges available to the legal profession. 4 THE 23 RD EALS ANNUAL CONFERENCE THEME: Continental Free Trade Area: Challenges and Opportunities for the Legal Profession East Africa Law Society holds its annual conference on rotational basis across member states. This year, the event will be hosted in Kenya at the port city of Mombasa. The premier event features high-level workshops; address from regional, continental and global leaders; numerous and exclusive networking events; entertainment as well as products exhibition by partners. This year, we are focusing on unpacking the regional and continental trade pacts. We aim at showing members the opportunities available in the EAC Common Market as well as the Continental Free Trade Area, and provide platforms for discussing hurdles and challenges that may be encountered. Content Among the activities planned for the retreats are: a. Leading Law Firms Forum The forum features the region s leading law firms and senior partners. Traditionally, the forum has hosted global leaders from international law firms to discuss the future of legal practice. Last year, the forum hosted Howard Morris, the former CEO of Dentons. The forum also hosted the annual retreat in Zanzibar in June 2018 and will continue to discuss the future of the legal practice under theme Retooling the Legal Profession for 21 st Century Opportunities and Challenges. In-House Counsel Forum The changing role of the in-house counsel was the focus of our inaugural in-house counsel retreat in Zanzibar in June In November, we will advance the discussion on Retooling the In-House Lawyer for the 21st Century Challenges in the corporate environment. The forum provides exclusive and safe environment for in-house lawyers to discuss common matters and explore solutions. This year s forum has evolved from 2017 breakfast session in Entebbe to a full day forum. The forum will feature joint discussions with the region s leading law firms as well as exclusive networking events with the region s leading lawyers and other leaders. Participation at this event is exclusive to lawyers who have applied and paid for the requisite registration fees. c. Young Lawyers Forum The 2018 Young Lawyers Forum will be the third since The forum hosts East Africa s emerging leaders in the legal profession and provides an exclusive platform for discussion leadership and other matters relevant to the young lawyer. The forum has traditionally been supported by the FORD Foundation and has featured discussions on Rule of Law, Good Governance and Role of Young Lawyers in Regional Integration. The forum also serves as a mentorship platform for young lawyers, with the region s leading law firm partners and corporation lawyers lining up to provide useful career guidance and development tips. The forum also hosts the East Africa Young Lawyers Essay Competition where winners are recognized. d. Women Lawyers Forum The 2nd Women Lawyers Forum borrows from the success of the inaugural forum in Entebbe in This year, the forum will feature discussion on cross-cutting areas relevant to the women lawyers in the region. The forum hosts leaders from the region as well as the globe. This year s forum will discuss, among others, inclusive development in the extractive industry, and gender equity in the continental trade. 4

14 KNOW YOUR HOST TOWN The 23rd Annual Conference is hosted by East Africa s Seagate Mombasa. One of the oldest towns in the region, Mombasa serves as the busiest seaport for East and Central Africa. Mombasa is the second largest city in Kenya, lying on the Indian Ocean and is under the management of the County Government of Mombasa. The city is the centre of the coastal tourism industry. The original Arabic name is Manbasa; in Kiswahili it is called Kisiwa Cha Mvita (or Mvita for short), which means "Island of War", due to the many changes in its ownership and the battles that brought about the changes in ownership. The city is located on Mombasa Island, which is separated from the mainland by two creeks; Tudor Creek on the west and Kilindini Harbor on the south. The island is connected to the mainland to the north by the Nyali Bridge, to the south by the Likoni Ferry and to the west by the Makupa Causeway, alongside which runs the Uganda Railway. The port serves both Kenya and countries of the interior like Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo linking them to the Indian Ocean. Transport The city is home to Moi International Airport, and receives direct international flights as well as connection flights from Kenya biggest airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi. Travellers from Nairobi and other areas can access Mombasa by passenger bus services. These bus services are operated from as far as Kampala, Kigali and Dar es Salaam. From Nairobi, travellers are able to conveniently access Mombasa by the SGR passenger train service. Currency The main currency in use in Mombasa is the Kenya Shillings(Ksh). Being a popular tourist destination, however, many facilities and businesses accept US Dollar. There are numerous licensed forex bureaus in Mombasa, mainly at the city centre and within the various shopping malls. Commercial banks also serve this function. Visitors are advised to do forex exchange only at licensed agencies due to rampant fraud and fake currencies. 13

Its interior comprises of torture rooms and prison cells where slaves were kept in captivity before being traded. MOMBASA MARINE PARK Warm azure ocean, swaying coconut palms on white sandy beaches are to be found in the Mombasa Marine National Park and Reserve. The park lies between the Mtwapa and Tudor Creeks and its blue waters are ideal for wind surfing, water skiing, snorkelling and diving. They also provide a home to a colourful variety of marine species including crabs, starfish, stone fish, cucumbers sea urchins, corals, turtles, sea grasses and interesting migratory birds including crab plovers. MOMBASA OLD TOWN Old Town is the part of Mombasa that is reminiscent of the days when the Arabs exerted a heavy influence on the town and its culture, and especially in the architecture and language (Kiswahili has a lot of phrases derived from various Arabic dialects). HALLER PARK The Haller Park (formerly Bamburi Nature Trail) is the largest animal sanctuary in Mombasa. Located in Bamburi next to the Cement Factory, the park boasts an enormous variety of animals, reptiles, insects and botanical gardens. Walking along the trail is the ideal way to look at the various animals, and on many occasions holding or feeding a reptile such as a snake is allowed under close supervision of a guide.
